In less the minute, the Flyers gained revenge for Saturday night's marathon shootout loss and at the same time dealt a healthy blow to the early season optimism of many of the Rangers faithful.  Goals by veterans Mike Knuble and Geoff Sanders a minute apart, followed by a 5 on 3 goal by Simon Gagne in the second period quickly exposed a New York team that had been attempting to hold on to an undeserved 1-1 tie after the first 20 minutes had been played.

It was a game reminiscent of many Rangers games that have gone before, but not a performance that has been common since Tom Renney took over the reigns.  A slow start was compounded by poor play from the net out.  Lundqvist was not sharp, and the top defensive pair of Michal Rozsival and Marek Malik appeared to have particular trouble with the Flyers top line.  On offense, the top two lines could barely get the puck into the Flyers zone let alone get a shot in the net, the first Rangers shot coming 13 minutes into the game and finishing with just two shots on goal through the first period of play.

The scoring opened early for the Flyers when Peter Forsberg won a draw and slipped behind the defense, allowing him plenty of time to skate in unmolested along the goal line before roofing a shot over the shoulder of Henrik Lundqvist on the short side.  While the Flyers continued to maintain the pressure, the Rangers struggled to find their legs, including failing once more to convert on the man advantage.

It wasn't until late in the first period that the Rangers finally got on the board when Petr Prucha blocked a shot in the defensive zone, then fed Brendan Shanahan while still down on the ice.  Shanahan skated in 2 on 1 with Thomas Pock, who set himself up perfectly to receive the pass and then finish the play with a stunning shot high over a sliding Nittymaki.

The second period quickly became that of the Flyers, and only a late power play goal with less than 30 seconds to go gave the Rangers any hope.  In the third period it appeared that New York had finally woken up, but a series of opportunities on the power play again went begging with Rozsival and Straka reluctant (or directed not to) shoot from the point and Niittymaki looking strong on those occasions that a save was warranted.

TURNING POINT:
With Malik called on a delayed penalty and the Rangers defense seemingly standing around, Mike Knuble skates in from the boards and slides a puck through Lundqvist's 5-hole

GAME NOTES:
Brendan Shanahan converted the Rangers first power play goal of the season late in the second period.  The Rangers have not won the first three games to start the season since 1989.

WHO STOOD OUT:
Thomas Pck quietly had a solid game and scored a pretty goal to even the score at 1-1.  Adam Hall tried hard, but was a -2 on the night.  Brendan Shanahan and Jaromir Jagr only really got going late in the second period.

WHO DIDN'T:
Pretty much the everyone else from Henrik Lundqvist out to the top line.
