Ranger Danger - Sad but True
The fact that Darius Kasparaitis is the second highest paid ($3.34M) player on the New York Rangers roster says it all…Glen Sather has been terrible since he arrived in the big apple and he has only gotten worst. Kasparaitis s a skeleton of the player he once was. Had Sather bought out his contract, the Rangers could have used the $3.34 to sign, oh I don’t know, Sergei Gonchar who is making a modest $3.5M in 2005. Instead Gonchar signed with the Penguins who also added Palffy, $3.5M, Recchi, $2.28M, Leclair, $2.21M. But why would you want any of those guys if you could sign Rucinsky and Straka for $3M each?

I offer this thought as an alternative to Kasparaitis - I understand that Derrian Hatcher was injured for most of last season but prior to last year he had played in at least 80 games in each of the previous three seasons. He is the same age as Kasper, is a leader, and a better all around player than Kasparaitis. It’s too bad that he signed for a modest $3.5M with the Flyers.

The signings of Rucinsky and Stratka aren’t horrible but the money certainly could have been used more wisely. If we are going to bring back ex-Rangers why not bring back Mike Knuble instead of Rucinsky. Knuble signed for half of what Rucinsky got, is a full year younger than Rucinsky, and had almost double the amount of points as Rucinsky over the last two seasons. But hey, why not stick with the Sather way and sign players for more money who produce less.

Then there is the whole Brain Leetch debacle. We trade him away, fine. We get some good prospects, great. He becomes a free agent after only playing a handful of games in a foreign jersey, even better. But somehow Sather watches one of the best, if the not the best, defensemen in Rangers history sign for $4M, one-year deal in Boston, horrible. Yea, Leetch isn’t getting any younger but who in hockey would not take him on their team over Darius Kasparaitis?

Finally, I’m just waiting for the day that Sather announces that Mark Messier is returning for his 80th season in the NHL and will log more minutes than any center on the Rangers. That would be the icing on the cake for what has been the worst off-season in recent memory.
