By all reports from teams around the NHL reporters and bloggers and by New York Rangers, Rangers G.M. Glen Sather is about to pull the trigger on a deal that would take the N.Y.Rangers to an Elite Level. The Rangers are at a point in the organization that they actually have too many prospects to stay under the 50 NHL contracts allowed under NHL rules as they already have some playing overseas to help that issue. Sooner or later, the Rangers have to make a multiple player deal for a single player, or just lose some prospects for nothing as they will just not be able to tender a few restricted free agents making them unrestricted and losing them to any NHL team that wants to sign them.
Tonight, Bob McKenzie from TSN tweeted that Bobby Ryan of the Anaheim Ducks is back on the trading block. FORGET about Rick Nash Rangers fans, THIS is the player the Rangers should go after. Bobby Ryan fits the Rangers style and has been a 30+ goal scorer in each of his full NHL seasons. Ryan can play both, LEFT WING and CENTER. He is only 25 years old, 6'2 and around 210 lbs. He has a great skill set of passing, shooting, and hitting. He has a cap hit of $5,100,000 per for the next three years, but actually makes $5,562,500 in real cash per capgeek.com He would greatly help the power play and 5 on 5 game immensely. Anything he could add to the penalty kill would just be a bonus. He has played for Rangers coach John Tortorella for team U.S.A. He is a local kid from Cherry Hill, N.J. and would look great in New York's Red, White, and Blue.
The Question is, who would you like for G.M. Sather to give up? The word going around is that the Ducks would look for 2/3 building blocks to help for the future as both Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry are in the last year of their current contracts. The rumored price for the Rangers hunt after Rick Nash is rumored to be Brandon Dubinsky, Michael Del Zotto, Christian Thomas, and a #1 pick (plus maybe another prospect). The new rumors have it as Dubinsky, Derek Stepan, and a #1 (+ pick/prospect) ,but who knows if that would be enough. All rumors have had Dubinsky in them so you can figure he is gone, as even today TEAM 1200 Ottowa posted that the Rangers were shopping Dubinsky aggressively. SO, who would the Rangers add to the package as the Ducks seem to not want to add too much more money to the cap hit. The Rangers have a few very good prospects with low cap hits that are the same type of players. I can see one of them going in the deal. Players like Ryan Bourque(caphit $900,000 for 2 years), Christian Thomas (caphit $970,000 for 3 years), and Michael St. Croix (still Jr. Eligible and a 100+ scorer). All three are small talented scorers and there is no way that the Rangers will have all 3 on the roster in the NHL at the same time. Anaheim already has Fowler as a top offensive defenseman, but with Visnovsky in his last year of $5,600,000 might look for Michael Del Zotto in the deal as he was tendered by the Rangers for alittle less than $830,000.
SO, after seeing alot of rumors on other sites and looking at stats backwards and forward, I would clearly make the trade for Bobby Ryan over Rick Nash. Ryan would cost less and add more to the Rangers. Would you trade Brandon Dubinsky, Michael Del Zotto, Ryan Bourque, and a #1 for Bobby Ryan? Would you rather go for Rick Nash for Brandon Dubinsky, Derek Stepan, 2 #1 picks for a guy that the Garden Crowd chanted at his apperance at the Garden this season "We Don't Want You". The pressure on both Nash and the team could mess around with team chemistry, while adding Ryan seems like a seemless addition as it also gets rid of two of coach Tortorella's dog house players in Dubi and DZ. Sather has made good trades lately, just look at the Gomez move that brought the Rangers McDonagh and opened cap space for Marian Gaborik.
This next week seems to be a very important for the Rangers to get to the next level. Does Sather go for it, or do they stand pat and stay with players from within the organization? Only Sather knows for sure. LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
