Will playing with old pal Richards get MSL going?

St Louis Needs To Be MSL
Posted by Michael M. Ramos ≡ 10:49:50 AM - March 30, 2014

It would seem that Martin St. Louis is finally going to be playing with his work out pal and ex teammate Brad Richards tonight against the Oilers. This move makes the most sense as MSL was brought to New York to play his  game that has made him an elite in the NHL, and not a replacement to play a Ryan Callahan type game. So far in his games as a Ranger, MSL has seemed lost in adjusting to the Rangers system and the players he has played with haven't brought out the best parts of his game. It would seem like a no brainer that he can find his game with someone who he spent all summer with and is one of the reasons that he wanted to come to New York and also why Ryan Haggerty signed with the Rangers. All three spent time this summer training with the same group and all 3 have had very good seasons to date. (Richards has had a bounce back year, MSL was solid in Tampa, and Haggerty was a top scorer in the NCAA this season earning him an NHL contract).

When the Rangers go out and get a top level player, they always seem to expect them to change their game to conform to the system in place although their skills don't fit them. It like fitting a square peg into the round hole theory. Why do the Rangers need all 4 lines playing the same exact game? How about having at least one line just playing unpredictable so that teams won't know that the Rangers will cycle down low and then feed the point and have nobody at the backdoor because 1 player will aways be behind the net. How about letting Brad Richards be Brad Richards. He isn't going to fly down the ice and around the defense for a breakaway. Let him set up his linemates with long stretch passes to Carl Hagelin flying down the wing forcing the opposing defense to retreat making more room for Martin St. Louis and even a Ranger defenseman to rush forward easily. Let Richards have the puck and feed MSL in his high scroing areas where he can be a sniper the Rangers need like the high slot or those angles that a only a sniper can score from. Hey coach, don't force this line to play the system of what big body players do of puck control down lown then feed the point and crash the net, that won't work with this line, let them play to their skillset!! A good defensive grouping with this line would beRafeal Diaz and Kevin Klein. Klein is the toughness to react in case of the other team trying to rough up these smaller and so tough forwards. Diaz is the perfect defenseman to join the rush with a great passer like Richards if he is on his game.

AV has let the Beniot Pouliot/Derrick Brassard/Mats Zuccarello line move away from the standard cycle low throw to the point offense and they have done well this year, probably the most consistent line throughout the season when together. Let the other teams have to guess what the Rangers are going to do instead of staying on script the whole game. Having two line free wheeling while the other two lines play the standard cycle then throw to the point just might be enough to make other teams play an honest game against the Rangers and open up areas of the ice that the Rangers have had taken away from them over the last few seasons.

Let's face it Ranger fans, the coaches were changed for a reason and so was the moving of our captain for an elite scorer. Give Martin St. Louis linemates that will bring out the best parts of his game, not make him fit into the Rangers system. It seems like coach AV might just have something here!!

LET'S GO RANGERS!!!
