Rangers To Make A Move From Strength

The offseason free agent signing of Kevin Hayes has been one of the highlights of this offseasons signings. The Rangers were in need of a third line center with the buyout of Brad Richards and his eventual signing with Chicago. The Rangers went on to sign ex-1st round Chicago pick Kevin Hayes for the max pay that was offered by a few NHL organizations as he picked the Rangers for their chance to return as a NHL Cup contender. So it was a sort of Richards for Hayes exchange plus $5.5 million cap savings.  That may turn out to be as good a deal as Gomez for Ryan McDonagh or DelZotto for Kevin Klein.

It is common knowledge for anyone who knows hockey and follows the Rangers that this years Rangers need a faceoff guy. He doesn't need to play center as Hayes does a great job for a rookie, but he is no where ready to be a regular faceoff guy that the Rangers can count on to win a key faceoff. There has been alot of talk around NHL rumor sites, including this one, about players like Vermette, Jordan Staal, or Kessel who would cause alot of disruption in the Rangers locker room which may take too long to get on the same page for a solid playoff run this coming offseason. It would seem easier to tweak the lineup with a player more like Mark Letestu of Columbus (who could be looking to equal what they paid to Pittsburgh to get him which was a 4th round pick or maybe a 3rd rounder from the Rangers since he is a UFA this summer) or Jay Clement (probably a 3rd rounder as he also is a UFA at seasons end) of Carolina. Mark Letestu can play center of wing but is a better offensive player that is over 50% in the faceoff circle. Jay Clement is the same answer in the faceoff circle, but is better in the defensive side of the ice. Do the Rangers go BIG or just a small tweak to keep this team together for a few more years.

In order to keep these Rangers together, some players will have to take alittle less (but comparable) per year to stay in New York with a shot to be competitive for the Cup each year. Derek Stepan who will be a restricted Free Agent would have to come in comparable to a John Tavares like contract of $5.5 mi caphit per year that could go for the same 6 years.  If Carl Hagelin, another Restricted Free Agent goes for a Michael Grabner type contract, it would be around $3 mil caphit for 5 years. Hopefully Martin St. Louis goes for an over 35+ Jaromir Jagr 1 year deal of $3.5 mil with maybe a signing bonus of $1 mil that would count towards the cap in the following year. Jesper Fast would gret a qualifier as a restricted Free Agent as would J.T. Miller keeping both at under $900,000 for a cap helping amount. It would seem like a slam dunk to sign Brady Skjei to a contract for the $925,000 caphit to fill out the roster.

Darren Dreger has tweeted out tonight that Zuccarello's agents are in town and are looking for $5 million caphit for 6 years. The Rangers are expected to be looking more for 4 years and $4 mil per (more of a Partick Berglund numbers and a $3.7 caphit for 3 years). I expect 5 years at $4.25 to make a deal.
