Frank Seravalli The Daily Faceoff put together a list of the top 15 trade targets as we close out the second month. Amongst the list is former Ranger J.T. Miller, whom is among several Canucks players that might become available given their start to the season.

There's a lot working against this one though, especially with the Rangers now talking to Strome about an extension. While Miller can also play wing as well as center, the challenge will likely be trying to fit the $5.25M salary into the roster for next year, not to mention what they would do after next season when he becomes a UFA.

The 28 year old forward (29 in March), certainly has done well in Vancouver, putting up nearly a point a game (141 points in 146 games), and could well want out if the Canucks decide to rebuild. Alternatively, the Canucks might want to keep much of their current team, and certainly someone who has been such a good fit there.

Question Of The Day

August 19th, 2021

Earlier this year the Rangers won by a margin of nine goals as they beat the Flyers 9-0. How many times has the margin been bigger?

Goaltender Igor Shesterkin stole another one

Goaltender Igor Shesterkin stole his second game of the year, stopping 32 of 33 shots to backstop a chippy 3-1 win against the Kraken in Seattle.  It was a chippy affair at times, belying the fact that this was the first time the two teams had met.  In the end though, it was the difference in goaltending and a couple of moments of offensive magic that got the Rangers the important two points to record their fifth straight road win.

Aside from the first ten minutes or so, and perhaps parts of the last five, it was the Kraken who looked the more settled team.  Dave Hakstol's collection of castoffs and journeymen took it to the Rangers, particularly in the second period when they held a 13-2 shot advantage and scored their only goal.

The Rangers came out well in the first 5-10 minutes, but after Chris Kreider's goal, it appeared that they took the foot off the gas as Seattle came at the puck carrier relentlessly.

Twenty thoughts:

  1. Coming into the game, Chris Kredier lead the team with six goals, all from in and around the front of the net.  Last night we finally saw his other great strength, scoring off the rush as he went 2 on 1 with Barclay Goodrow who served simply as a decoy.  Kreider's blast deceived Philip Grubauer and was in and out of the net before most realized.  The tally marked the 184th goal of Kreider's career, moving him into a tie with Phil Esposito for 15th most goals as a Ranger

  2. The Rangers improved to 27-8-1 in first games against franchises, including those that no longer exist:

The Rangers improved to 27-8-1 (55 PTS) in their first-ever reg. season game against an NHL franchise (active and defunct), including wins in the last seven such contests. #NYR's .750 win % and .764 points % in games which fall under that criteria are the highest in NHL history.

  3. CLUTCH!  Adam Fox scored the game winning goal off a patient feed from Artemi Panarin in the third, seconds after a crucial save at the other end of the ice by Shesterkin.  The goal was Fox's second of the year, and now gives him 15 for his career.  Six of those have now been game

  4. Speaking of Fox, there was a moment in the first period that he went to the lockerroom rubbing his jaw after getting tangled up with Jordan Eberle in front of the Rangers net.  Fox returned though, and all was good

  5. Both Panarin and Fox extended their point streaks to two games.  Panarin now has 4 assists in the two games, Fox a goal and 3 assists.  Kreider now has a two game goal scoring streak - 3 goals

  6. With four successful penalty kills, the Rangers have moved up to 13th in the league with an 83.3% efficiency rating - 25 for 30.  Since giving up four in their first two games, the Rangers have gone 22 for 23 in seven games, with the only blemish against the Flames, when Magiapane scored in the final 10 seconds of the game

  7. Ryan Reaves tried to skate before the game, but left the ice in frustration that he wasn't ready and he remains day to day, though on IR

  8. Jarred Tinordi got his second game of the season and did manage to get his first shot on net and first penalty minutes as a Rangers - a cross checking penalty less than two minutes after the Kraken had tied the game

  9. CLUTCH 2.0!  Don't look now, but Barclay Goodrow has three goals in nine games, to be tied with Alexis Lafreniere for second on the team.  Of course Goodrow has scored two of those into an empty net, but that career high of 8 goals seems to be in serious jeopardy.  He also picked up an assist on Kreider's goal, so posted his first multi-point game as a Ranger

  10. Shesterkin got chippy with Nathan Bastian in the third period, after the Seattle forward tried to pry out a puck from his glove after a scramble to the right side of the net.  Shesterkin immediately rose and pushed Bastian to the ice before several Rangers jumped on him

  11. The Rangers finished with a season low 16 shots on goal, including the empty net goal.  The previous low was 23 shots in the 2-1 OT win against the Toronto Maple Leafs.  The two shots on goal was also a season low for a period, matching the 2 shots in the second period of that same game.  Not a single Ranger had more than 2 shots on goal in the game

  12. With Kreider scoring in the first period, the Rangers have now scored goals in the first twenty minutes for two straight games.  They are now 4-0-0 when leading into the first intermission

  13. With 13 points in 9 games, the Rangers are off to their best start since 2009-10 when they went 7-2-0 under John Tortorella

  14. 5-1-0 - The Rangers record on the road in the first month of the season, that's the most road wins in the month of October in team history.  They've also won five straight on the road
  15. Kreider played in his 582nd regular season game, which tied Gump Worsley for 24th all time

  16. During this game, Shesterkin became just the 30th Ranger netminder to play 3000 minutes for the team.  To put things in context, Henrik Lundqvist had 11 seasons where he played 3000+ minutes

  17. It was also the 50th start of his career for Shesterkin and his 30th win.  He's the 30th goaltender to reach 50 starts, and the 26th to reach 30 wins.  He now has a 30-17-4 record in 54 games

  18. New York are now a perfect 6-0-0 when they hold their opponent to 2 or fewer goals.  They've allowed 1 or fewer in five of those competitions, all by Shesterkin

  19. When asked after the game whether this is the best he's ever played, Shesterkin responded 'I don't know'

  20. The Rangers improved to 2-1-1 against the Western Conference.  They're 4-1-0 against the East
