RUMOR MILL

Tuesday - January 25th

On TSN's insiders (Link), Darren Dreger made a comment on Arizona Coyotes defenseman Jacob Chychrun, noting that there were five teams that had serious interest in him, and notably he did not include the Rangers in the teams he listed off.

From reports late last week, it appeared the Rangers have indeed made an offer for the 23 year old blueliner, but given how far we are away from the deadline, perhaps Coyotes GM Bill Armstrong would prefer to wait to see what other teams might be willing to pay.

The Rangers seem to have a nice balance of the youth along with free agent singings that actually fit in with what the coach is preaching. The meetings that Sather had up in Canada with the entire Rangers upper management actually might have worked.

Two years ago Sather went out and brought in offensive players that started out well but ended up playing a more defensive game under ex-coach Renney. Tortorella said he was looking for a certain type of player and Sather actually listened. Even though Sather was leaning more towards Heatley, he went with the coaches wishes and got Gaborik. Tortorella even got Prospal to follow him to N.Y. as he knew he played his best under Tort's in Tampa. Tortorella went out on a limb and left 2 rookies at the blueline in Gilroy and Del Zotto. So far, it seems that the summer meetings are on the right path.

The first 12 games have the Rangers with a 8-3-1 record and sitting 2nd in the division and 4th in the conference. Gaborik is #3 in goals with 10 and #3 in points with 18. Tonight Gaborik will miss his 1st game of the season due to a knee on knee hit with ex-Ranger Prucha. The Rangers are reporting that it has nothing to due with the hip or groin. All Ranger fans are praying that this is the truth.

Prospal is a welcome addition and so far is getting along with his coach. Prospal is #2 in the NHL is assists with 12. He is getting alot of playing time with his work ethic and BOTH offensive and defensive play.

The Rangers All-World goalie is #4 in wins with 7 and barring any injuries will add to his NHL record of most seasons for a goalie starting his NHL career with his 5th straight 30+ win season. King Henrik will see less NHL games this season due to the Olympics, but should be sharp enough to lead both the Rangers and Sweden to great success this season.

Who would have thought the Rangers 3rd leading scorer was going to be 19 year old rookie defenseman Del Zotto? Through 12 games he has 12 points with 4 goals 8 assists.

Kotalik definitely plays a WIDE OPEN game as he also has 12 points with 5 goals and 7 assists but is a -3 on the season to date. He is a pleasant addition to the powerplay in which he was paid(maybe overpaid) to improve. Dubi, already benched due to bad play, seems to be bouncing back and playing harder. Lisin is another surprise and has been awarded with some 1st line time. Redden is a +4 on the season and that is the type of player he has become, I think we can forget about his good old days of being an offensive threat.

Everyone knows that it's all not good news. In the loses, and even some of the wins, the team has played poorly. This has to be expected when you have a new system of going forward all the time, and with alot of young players. The Rangers had an early peak with the 7 game winning streak and a valley of 3 losses. It seems that the Rangers might be on the way towards a leveling off point but there will be alot of peaks and valleys this season. Gaborik is already missing a game due to the knee on knee hit with Prucha and another rookie has been called up in Parenteau to replace him. Parenteau is finally getting a chance and needs to impress. If Parenteau plays well, it could mean the sitting of Higgins who has brought little to the team so far. Brashear must have hurt himself in the Orr fight because he seems afraid to fight since then. Even if he is sent to the minors, his 1.4 cap hit still counts. Maybe the Rangers can bring up Soryal or Byers to defend players when the gloves need to be dropped. Rozsival looks lost in this system to date. I would love to see Chelios take his spot on the roster.

I will be watching this season as 10 game intervals(this 1st one was 12) as the Rangers are 1/8th of the way to the playoffs. I see Gaborik playing between 60-70 games(giving him rests as he needs so he can be strong for the playoffs, and lets face it, he needs to be babied alittle), Del Zotto and Gilroy pushing for a Calder consideration, The Rangers #2 in the Division, and making it to at least the 3rd round in the playoffs. Washington and Pittsburgh are the CLEAR favorites in the East, with Philly looking strong but they are as fragile as the Rangers are, with their star Briere missing alot of games also.

LETS GO RANGERS!!!!!!!!

Anyone wanting to see what Ron Duguay might have looked like when he was younger can see his son play for the Jersey HITMEN JR B team(who are 11-3 on the season with alot of games to be played). The HITMEN are a JR program that plays out of Wayne NJ. I found out that the 15 year old Duguay was on the team when I was watching my nephew on the team, and saw him skating. He skates just like his father and when skating towards the puck has the same look of running on ice. The only problem is he wears a helmet and you don't get to see the hair, sorry girls.
