Dallas want's an NHL d-man for that pick. Unless Rangers are giving up McD or Skjei, it ain't happening.

I was hoping for Martin Necas at # 7 but Lias Andersson is said to be one of the few potentially NHL ready players in this draft.

We may be looking at Oscar Lindberg's immediate replacement.

Future Considerations: "A smart, mature, two-way center…good decision-making, leadership qualities and advanced understanding of the game…a true three-zone player…defensively responsible…will drop to block shots or find the open option and get his body in passing lanes…dangerous forechecker who reads the defense and uses an active stick to disrupt…covers up the ice for his teammates on the backcheck and always gives an honest effort…doesn’t commit a lot of mistakes and plays a very calm game while in puck possession"

Sounds like the type of player the Rangers or AV system is always looking for... block shots, three zone player, quick, plays hard every shift...sounds like a 4 inch bigger Zuc.

Sounds like a Jan Erixon and Jesper Fast look a like. The big question will be his offence. I find it hard to believe he was the best of he rest. I haven't seen a under 12 ranking on him yet. I do trust Clarke, but it's been so long since he had a first maybe he got mixed up with a second round pick. Lol.

I'm questioning it. I don't hate it or hate everything this team does, it's without question a debatable pick. The only proof of the caliber of the pick will be in about 7 years unless guys behind him blow by him developing.

I knew The Rangers weren't going to take a kid with questionable skating ability.... definitely expected a more dangerous offensive threat, but this kid was playing in a men's league last year.... Finished with 2 less points than ex-Ranger Erik Christensen in 3 less games played

Mattias Tedenby was also on the team

Sounds like another responsible player playing in a men's league early. I wanted Martin Necas, they got the other czech Filip Chytil

One of the youngest drafted... hope he pans out... I trust Gordie Clarke!

I don't know about no hands. The video shows me guys with pretty shifty moves.... they're just also used as PKers. I'm glad they aren't choosing potential liabilities defensively....

Yeah but have to remember too they're both playing in men's leagues. They'd probably put up point per game numbers if they were being dedended by other teenagers... but they're teenagers playing against 30 year olds probably on 3rd and 4th lines

The guy I wanted at 7th overal, Martin Necas scored 15 pts in 41 games playing on a team with Martin Erat..

Filip Chytil played in the same league and had 8 pts in 38 games

Then, in the WJC both players scored 13 points.... Necas did it in 4 less games, but Chytil scored 2 more goals with 6....

Necas ended up going 12th overall, Chytil goes 21st...

Av has won nothing either. Ruff got Buffalo to the Stanley Cup final and but for a ignore of Brett Hull in the crease on the cup winning goal things might have been different. Vigneault twice. Vigneault has about 50 more wins over Ruff over almost indentical total games coached. Over the 15 years that's 3 or 4 wins a year. When you look at the fact most of Ruffs time in Buffalo was spent coaching teams with low budgets and low payrolls, compared to Vigneault's teams in Vancouver, that had a lot more big ticket players, carrying over to the Rangers. I think Ruff has done as much with less over his career.

Necas played on a very good team that eventually became the Czech champion this year.
He had great support from everybody. He's a very talented player no doubt.

Chytil is a complete opposite in that regard. Youngest player on a terrible team with no supporting cast to speak of.
He was moved around the lineup.

Not saying Chytil is a good choice at #21 though. We'll see in a few years.

Apparently Chytil is expected to be their 2nd line center next year at the age of 18

With his international point totals being similar to Necas, and looking at the video on him.... he looks good to me

All I know is that the current roster has way too many forwards who are dumb, aren't in the right spots defensively, don't play hard consistently and aren't able to run a PP. These two selections seem to be gritty, excellent defensive, high motor guys with good skill. Something this team doesn't have nearly enough at forward. There is a reason Jesper Fast consistently is better in the playoffs than guys like Stepan, Hayes and Nash. He cares and tries hard. While his point totals in the playoffs won't match those players. He does everything else light years better than those players.

Lias Andersson gets the title of "safest pick in the draft" this year... This isn't a MDZ or Sanguinetti pick where there's high upside, but needs to be molded....

This kid is one of the few said to be potentially NHL ready now. There are no flaws to his game, unless you want to call not being an elite level scorer a flaw.... Stepan isn't elite.... the guy they compare him to, Chris Kunitz, isn't elite.....

But that's why this draft is called "weak" remember? The potential elite level talent isn't there. This kid isn't going to be an allstar.

But a top 6 forward that can play in all situations is a good pickup in my book

Right... again this isn't Del Zotto or Sanguinetti. This isn't boom or bust. This is a sure bet NHLer with some upside.

Sanguinetti and Del Zotto had all the tools to be flashy allstars, but needed to work on their game. The ceiling was high, but the floor was low...

Andersson has a high floor. The worst he'll be is a career bottom 6 NHLer who kills penalties and forechecks hard.... the worst he'll be is Jesper Fast.... But there is skill there that could translate into top 6 talent as he matures and gains experience.

He will compete for Oscar Lindbergs' spot this season.....

Chytil is going to be a power house! He's 6'2" 190.... when he packs some muscle on, there will be nothing undersized about him.

Andersson is 5'11" but 200 lbs.... at 18 years old.... Kid is strong, and pushing 6'

I read where Chytil is barely 6 feet, 178lbs.

Whatever. Neither are going to transform this team down the road from a finesse team to a power team.

From that article:

Chytil often creates turnovers with deft stickwork and high-level hockey IQ ...

Despite not possessing tremendous upper-body strength ...

While slightly undersized ...

It’s time for him to hit the weight room.

Chytil’s playmaking abilities could entice a franchise to invest a second- or third-round draft pick. The team could then stash the young European skater away in the AHL for a season or two.

He's small. He's a nifty AV-type of player, which I dislike. This team needs (and has needed for some time) power forwards and physical D-men with size and snarl. Neither of these top 25 picks address that need, either now or in the future.

Grade = D-

Ruff signed as assistant coach. Sounds like insurance for a management team expecting improvement in many areas out of double mint. PP PK faceoff's d zone coverage, mental readiness of players, line combo's and matchups ect. Ect. Ect.

He's small. He's a nifty AV-type of player, which I dislike. This team needs (and has needed for some time) power forwards and physical D-men with size and snarl. Neither of these top 25 picks address that need, either now or in the future.

Grade = D-

A clear sign that AV is here to stay.

Unfortunately, that seems to be the case.

I hope so...but dont you remember about Sanguinetti when they said "Wait til you see this kid"? Mclrath draft Pierre on TV said hell no....He said as much about Del Zotto too.

If he ends up a bottom 6 forward with the number 7 pick....Then the grade is a D

Since I've had time to research the pair and read some info on them my initial why didn't the Rangers trade down and still pick both has softened a bit, although more for Anderson than Chityl. Rumour has it the Kings we're picking Andersson if available which didn't leave a lot of trade down options. Chytil seems like he could have been had a little later but trust Gorton on his one he must have had his reasons.
Chytil only being eligible for the NHL draft by 10 days has spent his entire career battling against older players. Assuming the same eligibility cut off dates apply in his country. Players born between Sept 15 minor hockey cutoff date and December 31 are usually physically and mentally superior to kids born later and up to the following Sept 15th. During minor hockey and stepping into junior hockey the advantage of a kid born Sept 16th right after the cutoff date over a kid like Chytil born on Sept 5th almost a year later is huge physically and maturity wise. So he's been battling older players all his minor hockey life. Birth year is the first thing junior hockey scouts ask, month and day is second. By the time those with a later in the year birth like Chytil, are 19 or 20, and have personally physically and mentally reached young adult status, the age advantage kinda goes by the wayside, if they are still playing, some kids just can't make up that age difference especially if they are a little slow in the growth dept, and never move up from minor hockey. But it is a big issue for kids growing up. Next time your looking at team rosters check it out. The bulk off the players on junior, college and NHL rosters will be born between Sept 15th and the end of May.
So if your planning a new born hockey player launch, make sure it's just after Sept 15th, he will have a lot better chance of success.

The hiring of Ruff cannot be all that good news to AV, I think, just my thought, nothing that I heard. But, I'm thinking if Rangers start slow & falter in any way, guess what & guess who is right there. I can't believe AV is very happy about this.

Only time will tell but this may go down as 1 of the worst drafts in a long time. The picking was slim according to experts (i.e. 1999).

The seat deserves to be warm under AV...How many times did he have the wrong guys on the ice at the end of the game and we get burned? He takes good lines and blows them up...He punishes JT and Grabs...but not Stepan or Kreider

I think most will now agree, a great reg season coach, but that's it, reminds of Nielson.

It is interesting though every time the Rangers get into the Top 10, which is NOT often, it is a horrible draft year. Figures with Rangers luck.

It'll be interesting to compare his production this year with next year's draft class.... since he is the youngest kod in this draft. They say he'd start thks year as a top 10 pick if he were part of the 2018 class

You're right, they aren't building a team made of towering lumbering forwards and big bodied defensemen

They're building a speedy smart three zone team

No guarantee that he'll do anything like that.

Size and snarl is not "lumbering". Did you watch Dumoulin and Cole play defense for the Pens in the playoffs?

Speedy and smart until they play a team that takes the body. Then they're not so speedy and not so smart and they lose in the playoffs. Again.

It's ok. I'm resigned to watching AV put out an endless parade of defensemen who, in his mind, move the puck quick and play goalie in front of Henrik instead of attacking the puck carrier and taking the body. Just biding time until they finally fire his gum-chewing ass. But until then, I will complain about it.

Here's a pre-draft writeup from Canucks blog, saying he could be the steal of the draft:

This is typical Clark though - find guys who fell for whatever reason ("Character", injury, "doesn't want to come to NA", youngest guy in the draft) and takes them/maximizes their value.

Did it with Duclair, Buchnevich, Sean Day, and now Chytil.

When you draft that early your looking for a firstline centre or stud dman. Clark has a excellent track record, obviously he didn't think either was available. He calls this kid a dynamic player not a dynamic scorer. That's a pretty profound assessment, leaving himself wide open for criticism. Dynamic players are game changers, maybe this guy has enough offence down the road to become a top centre. It's like any other draft three, four years tells the tale.

That's old information. Chytil is not a "power forward" and does not play that style, but that size is incorrect.

He was measured at 6'2.25", 192 lbs at the NHL Draft Combine in early June 2017.

I didn't say power forward. He's going to be a power house, though.

17 years old, and he's 6'2" 192 lbs!!! At 17 years old!

He's going to bulk up.... he's going to get bigger. Meaner? Will he use that strength? Who knows... he's 17.... but at very least he should be hard to knock off the puck. He should be able to win battles. He's a good skater now.... what happens when you add more strength behind those strides?

He's going to bulk up, and he's going to be developing in a men's league.... playing 2nd line minutes this year.... There's real potential here

Right, reower forward, was responding to PV.

I think the poor reaction to Chytil is because they're comparing him to the 2017 draft eligibles. And to an extent, that's fair, because he's a 2017. But if you compare him to the 2018 guys, he's probably a top 10 pick. So you're getting a 2018 top 10 guy for the #21 pick in 2017. I can live with that.

Exactly. And like I said before, Martin Necas is the guy I was hoping they'd take at #7

He's 18 years old listed as 6'1" 179lbs

In 41 games he scored 7 goals and 8 assists playing on a what Pavel said is a better team in the same league as Chytil

Who in 38 games scored 4 goals and 4 assists
He also had a goal and an assist in the 2 post season games he played

Necas had 4 goals and no assists in the 10 playoff games he played

At world juniors they played on the same team
Necas: 15gp 4g 9a 13pts
Chytil: 19gp 6g 7a 13pts

Necas was drafted 12th overall....

We got Chytil at 21

Interesting #s: Since 2000 the last expansion to 30 teams. THN raked teams in wins:
Reg Season:
Detroit 728
SJ: 702
Vancouver: 666
Sens: 665
Dallas: 663
Bruins: 657
Pitt: 656
NJD: 656
Caps: 654
NYR: 650
Ducks: 650
...so NYR Top 10

Playoffs:
Pitt: 100
Wings; 92
Ducks: 85
Sharks: 83
Hawks: 77
Boston: 65
NJD: 63
Sens: 62
NYR: 61
...so NYR Top 9

Overall Wins since 2000:
Wings
Sharks
Pitt
Ducks
Sens
Bruins
NJD
Vancouver
NYR
...overall Top 9

Also, Devils (to me) didn't expect.

Because of the rampant mediocrity that pervades the league, any team can rack up a ton of wins if they beat the teams as bad or worse than themselves. The Coyotes have never been considered a good team...yet the racked up a whopping 135 wins between 2009-12 (50, 43 and 42).

The Hockey News used to be the premiere hockey publication but now they are just clickbait garbage. It's rare that I read anything of any worth coming from them.

Hayes on the wing??? They obviously have never watched him play there.

And if Miller is at Center, Hayes will not be on his line.

I seriously doubt Puempel and Kreider will be around either (especially the Pump)

We traded Day at the deadline in 2019 to regain the rights to Matt Puempel, who we let walk after a bitter arbitration in 2018 when he asked for $6.7m per after scoring 43 goals.

I'm assuming he scored those 43 goals over the four year period of 2016-20.

I wasn't speaking of Mr. Fish....

I was speaking of the scaled variety. They deserve to be wrapped in something better than THN....The Post would be a huge upgrade.

I think of the 20 prospects the THN raved about with the Islanders and Devils, about 4 turned out to be decent. Hoping many young players will take a big step up for the WolfPack this year now that Gernander is out. Thank God. Would be huge for the bottom 6 going forward if Kovacs, Stromwall and G. Fontaine could develop down there. Our fan base like many cases has already written off prospects like G. Fontaine. He's a guy I think will be our 4th line center for years. Top faceoff guy. He would have scored a lot more in the Q if his dumbass team had some forwards that could play defense. Instead they had to make him the checking guy.

Nobody's written Fontaine off, there are just more exciting prospects to talk about.

Also they made him "the checking guy" because that's his strength. He doesn't project to be a scoring forward in the NHL, he's hardly a scoring forward in the Q. He could be a good bottom-6, PK type forward for us. Needs another couple of years, hopefully in the AHL, to develop.
