Every time Quinn talks about what he wants from his players, he mentions a want to

- Play with speed
- Work as a 5 man unit in all 3 zones
- Play hard in front of both nets "see who's going to the net"
and
- Playing PHYSICAL!

All we can ask for

It's a rebuild, the roster should be dismal. Yet we still have less 4th liners than the Islanders.

The roster is not dismal at all. Especially when you can throw out a 4th line like that. It really comes down to the defensive system and how much it will help the defenseman compared to AV's moronic one. Other two keys are Buchnevich and Vesey. Buchnevich is a lazy dog most of the time. He needs to step it up or be sent to the minors. Vesey was completely misused by AV.

Andersson-Zibanejad-Kreider
Buchnevich-Hayes-Vesey
Spooner-Chytil-Zucc
Fast-Fontaine/Nieves-Namestiknov

Skjei-Shattenkirk
Staal-Pionk
Hajek-McQuaid
Smith

The potential of this team is bottom dweller-bubble team.... they may fight their way in to the playoffs, but they will never be seen as a contender as currently constructed.

If they trade for Panarin and Trouba, I may change my tune

In what life? His offensive production is just fine. He has a heavy shot, and is a fast sob for his size.... He'd also be leaned on more here than on the Jets, so his numbers would reflect the increased ice time, I'd think...

But he's a physical force out there. That's mostly why I like him, the guy is intimidating. Defensemen are for defense, we already have Shattenkirk

His offensive production sucks ass. Open your eyes and look at the numbers. He consistently demands elite money and he's not elite. A guy like Provorov is so much better it's sad. Trouba is a dickhead.

The numbers say he's good for around 30 pts a season. Pretty much the same production as McDonagh...

I don't think anyone has called him elite.... and I'm not sure what he demands... but if he came here, he'd be our best defenseman.

The reason he's talked about, is because he's available. Provorov is not.

Maybe? But don't you want to give a 20 year old defenseman at least a year in the AHL before he's labeled a bust? I mean the chances are pretty high that he tops out in the AHL, and after a year or two he goes to Europe. Which is fine since he was a third round pick... I just think expectations should be in line with the player he is, not the player he was when he was 15.

It's just pretty telling that he doesn't get much of a look in Traverse City, nor even a game in preseason here.

I'm not looking at the status he was given when he was 15. We're talking about a player we drafted in the 3rd round.... a round that produced Buchnevich and Duclair. Hell, Joey Keane was drafted in the 3rd round this year and is in the lineup tomorrow.

Give him the year in the AHL.... he clearly needs it if the mistakes he's making are that glaring that he's sent down already.

Did Day have a chance to make this team? We all know the answer. There are a lot of defensemen here currently ahead of him. Sending him down now relieves any pressure and let's him start the stage of his career we all knew he'd be on this season. And being drafted in the 3rd round shouldn't carry expectations no matter who you list. Duclair was't tendered. Buchnevich fell like a lot of Russians that have the KHL option. List all the third rounders that haven't made it. It will be about 80-90% of them?

Brooks reports first cuts are coming today

And Sean Day is on the list

Doesn't even get a preseason game. BUST

A 3rd round pick that doesn't make the NHL is not a bust.

A defenseman coming out of the OHL that doesn't make the NHL is not a bust.

A 20 year old that doesn't make the NHL is not a bust.

A 20 year old who got into the CHL as one of a handful of 15 year olds, who originally projected as a 1st rounder, who then went in the 3rd round, who got sent back to the OHL last year rather than going to the AHL and now is one of a handful of cuts in the first round, is on the wrong career trajectory. While it's hard to call a 3rd round pick a bust, I would say that expectations for him making the NHL at this stage should be appropriately very low to non-existent.

I just don't understand not giving him the experience. Play against NHL talent. Let him taste it a bit.

Let alone Traverse City.... Lias Andersson didn't need to play in that.

Understood that Day isn't making the team... there's 18 defenseman at the start of camp... He got cut before Joey Keane who was drafted two years after Day, and Crawley who was drafted 1 year after Day.

Neither of them are making the team, either.... They'll see preseason hockey though... Like Fish said, the trajectory isn't pointing in the right direction.

Hopefully he learns something in Hartford. He needs to start at least being in the conversation as a call up, at some point... or he's a bust. 3rd round or not, call it what you want. Part of the 80% that don't make it.

In junior hockey you see kids trying to make it. Some have a car load of talent and they can fool you with the expectation they are going to put it all together and be a player, until you realize they have no brain or heart or guts. Some have the ability to figure it out and put it all together and move onwards and upwards. The ones that don’t get weeded out. Not to many secrets on guys after playing at the junior and college level. Day is unique because his raw physical abilities lead to opinions and expectations that dwarf his mental game and compete attitude that are a must part of a NHL players game. In some ways his ability to get to pro hockey with so many obvious question marks is a testament to his skill level, lessor skilled players would have been already dumped. In its simplest form whats lacking is his minds ability to utilize the enormous physical ability he’s got. His talent which is incredible still gives one the hope he gets it together even though it’s more likely he ends up in the ECHL and it’s one and done this year, ending in a release or trade. Very very important year coming up for that kid. Unless he figures it out soon he won’t be around long.

Again, you're still comparing him to expectations from 5 years ago. There are plenty of "projected for the first round" kids who fall to later rounds, 3 years later.

A third rounder getting sent back to the OHL for an overage year, is not unusual at the least. I don't have high hopes for him making the NHL but I never really did. Forget that he's "Sean Day" for a minute and just realize that he's a third round pick, lots of talent but questions surrounding hockey IQ and work ethic, he's starting in the AHL as a 20 year old... none of that is unusual or immediate cause for concern. If anything, a third round pick getting to the AHL is actually already pretty decent value for where he was picked.

DeAngelo really hasn't been bad. I don't think he's been good enough to make the team, but not bad.

I'm getting more excited about this season. Zibanejad was really good last night

Lias had the better game, but the puck protection and release by Chytil was nice... Let's not forget about Buchnevich

Joey Keane has been sent back to his Juniors team

He being cut gives them two full team

13 forwards 7 defensemen and 2 goalies

On each squad. So we can assume one squad will play the Islanders on Saturday and The Devils Monday with cuts coming Tuesday? Maybe?

This sounds reasonable. On the other hand, I could also see that they may want another look at a guy or two after the Islanders game and may play him for the Devils also. I mean I'm pretty sure Kreider is going to make the team, so it would be smart of them to use that preseason roster spot to better evaluate someone who is on the bubble.

I didn't want to make a new thread for it, but just read Duguay won't be in the studio with Valliquette between periods and post game. Unsure who will replace him

I vote Sean Avery

The rest of the league isn't chit... He IS on a good team... no doubt... but as good as they are, they started out with a 3-2 record with Hellberg... and have gone 4-0 with Shestyorkin... 2 of the wins were shutouts....

It's the undeniable second best league in the world, and Shesty is one of, if not THE best goalie in that league.... if he keeps this pace, he will be...

They like Olof Lindbom, but goalies tend to take longer to develop... Igor is coming next year, so let's imagine the likely scenario of him being Lundqvist's backup at the begining of next season..... if we didn't draft Lindbom, our prospect pool would be EMPTY.

By the time Lindbom is NHL ready, Lundqvist will be retired, Shestyorkin will be starter with a few years NHL experience, and best case scenario we have a goalie controversy... for maybe a year or two, and then we can sell one for a premium!

I guess we could've drafted another freaking defenseman, or something, but they made a really smart decision to restock the goalie position while they had the chance.

Nothing is guarenteed for next year's draft.

Not sure if you're referring to a specific trash comment or not, but there is truth to Shestyerkin's stats being inflated due to the team he plays on. (How much so, is a matter of debate).

This certainly is not to take away from his talents or his abilities or his status as the Rangers' top goaltending prospect, but many goaltending stats are heavily influenced by team and it's important to see his stats in context.

I totally agree with continuing to take goaltenders because they are so difficult to draft with any certainty, and you need to keep the pipeline stocked. It wasn't so long ago that people were thinking that Skapski or Halverson would be the heir apparent. Meanwhile, other unheraleded guys (Wall, Nell, Huska) have moved up the depth chart.

I have no problem with Lindbom as a player but my criticism of him was of draft position (and therefore the Rangers' draft strategy). Like Keane, Lindbom is a player I thought (many thought) could be drafted much later. So there's a bit of the Rangers leaving some value on the table by drafting him early.

Having said that it's water under the bridge at this point, I want them to draft smart but if he turns out to be good, it won't matter if he's a first rounder, a third rounder, or an undrafted FA.

Sorry rob but have to call this out, this is not true. Georgiev has a very good shot at backing up this year. Probably does not project to be a starter but he's young still. Huska started slow but had an incredible second half. Lindbom certainly helps add to the depth but it's not like the goaltending cupboard is bare. The Ragners have actually done a very good job managing the goaltending pipeline in the past 6-8 years or so.

Actually it was a specific comment as he was saying the Rangers feel Shestyorkin is overrated because of his team(his team isn't that dominant) and they are going to try and sign Panarin and Bobrovsky after this season. Then he mentions his prowess of getting the Kravtsov pick right and others chime in with their belief he's right because of this past insider info he has at his finger tips.

Yeah I don't think anyone expected them to make the NHL roster out of the gate. Same with Hajek and Lindgren. Some AHL will do all of them some good.

Even this year where there are spots available, there are always fewer spots than prospects. I'm encouraged that Lettieri and Pionk are still around. TD has been better than I expected(not saying much) as has Crawley been a nice surprise, for the second training camp in a row.

Gettinger has played well, Belesky was doing better than I thought (RIP) and Howden has been good also (but definitely needs AHL time)

Personally I'd like to see the Rangers divest themselves of a "veteran" forward and a defenseman to make a little more room. If nothing else it'll be cheaper and you can get a future asset.

Not surprising in my mind, seems to me he's really at best an AHLer at this point

Thought Gilnour and Gettinger would go down with the rest of them, but guess they will have a day or so head start

Meskanen at least brought some energy to his game. Lindqvist was wholly forgettable.

No surprises here. Gettinger and Gilmour at least built a good case and reputation for themselves and put themselves in line for an injury callup.

Very good question to ask what Lindqvist is still doing up here

No surprises, although the two so called big Swedish league signings should have both went with them.

Oh look what we have here. We'll probably never see the guy again.

itsmcilrathtime - 2017-07-23 5:24 PM

McIlrath was screwed over by our pansy coach who thinks all defenseman have to pass and that physical play means nothing. Thus, why the slot is always filled with forwards in front of Hank. We also didn't give away Hagelin for free you imbecile. We used that pick to get Gropp. Gropp has the potential to be a big time, forward for us down the line. Hagelin got 4 million a season. He's a role player. Nothing more. He sucked this year. He sucked offensively for our team in the playoffs.

Wolfpack’s roster out of camp

Finalized Roster

The Pack have two goalies, eight defensemen, and 14 forwards.

Goalies: Marek Mazanec, and Dustin Tokarski.

Defense: Chris Bigras, Sean Day, John Gilmour, Libor Hajek, Ryan Lindgren, Rob O’Gara, Brandon Crawley, and Vince Pedrie.

Forwards: Lias Andersson, Bobby Butler, Steven Fogarty, Gabriel Fontaine, Tim Gettinger, Ryan Gropp, Peter Holland, Dawson Leedahl, Michael Lindqvist, Ville Meskanen, Shawn O’Donnell, Ty Ronning, Shawn St. Amant, and Cole Schneider.

It’s getting better down there for potential future Ranger players with Hajek, Lindgren, blues chippers, Crawley legitimate future roster material, and Day with the physical talent and then some, but needs to fix his mental game. Andersson, Chytil Blue chippers, and possibles in Gettinger, and Fontaine.

Unless we go for Trouba...there is no reason to draft or add more D men....We need high end Forwards...I would go for Panarin as a UFA

The only way there is going to be production from Gropp is if the Rangers can assign him to the Islanders.
