Ten forwards in the Rangers' lineup for their season opener on Oct. 4 vs. Nashville were 26 years old or younger (Hayes, Fast, Spooner, Zibanejad, Namestnikov, Vesey, Lettieri, Buchnevich, Howden, Chytil). LEADING THE WAY

The Rangers have five alternate captains for the 2018-19 season - Jesper Fast, Chris Kreider, Marc Staal, Mika Zibanejad, and Mats Zuccarello. Staal is in his ninth season as an alternate captain with the Rangers, as he was first named an alternate captain at the start of the 2010-11 season. Sadly, the best thing that could happen is if other teams lose forwards or defenseman for the year with injuries. You don't wish that on players but it ultimately would help Gorton move guys like Namestnikov, Staal and Smith.

There will be another good dump at the deadline. In the meanwhile Andersson, Hajek, Lindgren and even Chytil will be better served in Hartford. Its called development, whether some think a Hajek or Andersson is better than current Rangers, that's irrelevant in the long term development game. Those players need to remove all doubt they are ready for the NHL. Put in the work in Hartford and they will be here at the deadline, sooner if they have removed all doubt, and Gorton can make room. Don't buy into the crap "we don't want Andersson playing 5-8 minutes" its a smokescreen for he's not ready and he couldn't beat out Howden for the fourth line spot with minimal minutes. That's still better than hartford if your ready. Being around and practicing with NHL players is good for development but you have to be physically and mentally ready to benefit, and have nothing to gain going back to Hartford. .

I think Howden's age is what beat out Andersson. He was drafted in 2016, and is a year ahead because of it. I think Andersson is and has been NHL ready. It's not like Howden isn't going to make rookie mistakes. Chytil being on the 3rd line doesn't mean he's more NHL ready. The 3 of them will be rotating in and out all year until they clear roster space for all of them to stay.

To start the season, they took Chytil's higher skillset ceiling, and Howden's seniority. Andersson can and will play in this league this year

Not sure about needing a 7th D so early in the season. Reminds me of AV’s moves last year.

I don’t like the 7 d. Especially since he shortened his bench last night, and has a quick turnaround for today, and based on what we’ve seen so far he will probably pine a couple of the usuals.

Not sure about needing a 7th D so early in the season. Reminds me of AV’s moves last year.

Nothing like AV. This team is trying out stuff for the future. AV was not.

And I missed it!I can’t watch his play anymore.

Well keep it in perspective we are talking a lite weight hitter.
Oh ....it’s that old saying- You never know.
I am looking forward to see him getting fat.

This group is resilient so far. This is kinda like the late 80’s group. Very young, some long term keepers, a few trade chips. I loved those teams, they were fun to watch and root for.

Look on the bright side, as of now we have the most ping pong balls.

It's going to take a little while for DQ to know what he has and doesn't have as far as players. Outside of yesterdays goaltending and defensive play I like the style and energy most of the team plays.

I think the only player that needs to be traded is Hayes by the deadline, no way should this guy get 5.5 or 6 for the next 5 years. If Names has an attitude problem, maybe he can be part of a trade. Not going to find any takers for Shatt, Staal or Smith

Yeah I don't know why people are complaining. Quinn is doing everything we've been whining for for literally, decades.

Maybe Torts benched a vet for a little bit once? But he played favorites as much as any coach. Quinn basically benched Hayes and Shattenkirk, "his guys", for half a game. Good for him.

I don't know about Gordie. Didn't like the second round pick at all this year because it wasn't needed. If all his first rounders turn out to be real good players, then he's doing a good job. I think a good GM has to turn out one good, young player from each draft with a normal amount of picks. If you don't have a first rounder, it is tough. If you have multiple 1st and 2nd's, you should hit on two of them. Looks like he will do that even without first rounders other than the 2015 draft. Gropp or Huska have to pan out. I like Gettinger and Fontaine long term to play a role on this team from the 2016 draft.

Gorton's stupidity with the rebuild are not his deals, it's his signings and failure to commit fully to it. I was one of the few who said he ripped Yzerman off in the McDonagh and Miller deal. Hajek is a future top 4 guy. Howden is much more talented than I thought. I figured him to be a 3rd line guy for a decade. He has top 6 talent.

The silver lining is its not going to take Quinn long to figure out his rowers and his dogs. He already has, as evidenced by sitting Shattenkirk and Hayes for long periods of time. Its a slap in their face, and a strong message to get their azz in gear and play his way, or it becomes a Gorton issue to get them out of here. And it's not just those two. Namestnikov, Smith, and others haven't been overwhelming. You can't have floaters on a good hockey team, they are to much of a drag on the team play and ultimately they create the majority of the problems on the ice resulting in goals against and other teams offensive opportunities. Having players in a NHL jersey that don't put out the necessary effort is beyond belief. Players like that shouldn't even be in the league.
If Hayes and Shattenkirk don't respond and start to consistently play well then they gotta go. And I'm not holding my breath, my view is a dog is a dog is a dog. Its either in your DNA to have heart and guts or it's not, you will never go wrong with the ones that have it. It blows me away at the NHL level teams are still overlooking that basic premise, and expecting guys who have never shown signs of playing balls out, to find that missing battler part of their game. Some times young kids need some time to get the confidence to play with that attitude that got them to the NHL others bring it to the table off the get go, see Howden. Hayes and Shattenkirk have been around long enough and should be looking at their last chance in New York, and then weed them and the rest out.

That's complete nonsense. There will be multiple takers for Staal and Smith. Especially if the Rangers retain some salary. Nash brought back a freakin first for crying out loud. Staal and Smith are still gritty vets who on a deep, talented, winning team can contribute. This board and HF have had that same, idiotic idea that nobody wants any Rangers players. Last year should have disproved that. Nash was awful last year. McDonagh wasn't good last year either though he obviously has been. Grabner hasn't been good anywhere other than NY. These players all brought back top returns for their values.

For a second there I thought they were going to pass on him. If the fans trash him enough this season, he might just ask out. Again, like Staal and Smith, it will be a retain trade. He only has three more years on his deal. So if they deal him at the deadline, a team will essentially have him for a little over 2 years. I suspect the only way he agrees to a move is to be told he's going to the minors or agree to a move. Spooner and Namestnikov should have never been resigned. They should have been traded. Though, because they are short team contracts dumbass Gorton should be able to move them.

Shattenkirk was a terrible signing...How is it the fans knew it but Gorton didnt?

For a second there I thought they were going to pass on him. If the fans trash him enough this season, he might just ask out. Again, like Staal and Smith, it will be a retain trade. He only has three more years on his deal. So if they deal him at the deadline, a team will essentially have him for a little over 2 years. I suspect the only way he agrees to a move is to be told he's going to the minors or agree to a move. Spooner and Namestnikov should have never been resigned. They should have been traded. Though, because they are short team contracts dumbass Gorton should be able to move them.

Yeah let's hope

If Nash can bring back a first round pick. Staal, Smith, Spooner and Namestnikov can all be moved. I don't care if they have to retain salary on all of them. Young kids will be cheap for a while. Gorton was a total moron signing 3 of those guys. He needs to suck it up a little, dump them and move on. It would be unbelievable if the Rangers could actually get a top 2 pick for once. There is some excitement watching Chytil and Howden. Some in Pionk and even DeAngelo who I don't care for but had a good game vs. the Canes. It's a disgrace I can't watch Andersson, Hajek and Lindgren over some of the crap vets we have to be subjected to.

The lottery is just another televised money grab...It should be terminated...You want to tank go ahead...Players still go out there and try hard...if the fans dont like it they will not show up

I'll take a top 10 pick for the 3rd year in a row.

Probably won't get Hughes, but there are plenty of good looking offensive prospects....

3 Russians
Vasily Podkolzin
Matvei Guskov
Arthur Kaliyev

All seem like good fits.

Or if you like sweet Finnish hockey names, Kaapo Kakko is your guy

Some places have Kakko as the second overall prospect. Most with Cozens. Dach is another one rated top 7. Enough Russians already. Both Cozens and Dach are huge centers, righty shots.

Howden could be a blessing if he has 2nd center potential. Right now it's early, but he's showing it. Should have had another assist if Vesey could have hit an open net.

If Gorton can finally wake up with moving these vets out, then things can look good. Especially with a top 3 pick. I loved what I saw from Hajek. Lindgren is one of those guys our thickheaded fan base will piss on because he's not an offense threat. However, he'll win games for you by being steady and not being stupid. I like the Miller pick a lot. I'm pretty excited to see what he does this year. He plays mean also. DeAngelo did look much better. You can't question his passing skills. They could be elite. He's the type of guy that needs a stud, defensive defenseman playing next to him. I was for moving him but after watching that bumbling idiot Shattenkirk, maybe not. On a side note. Oh how I wish we could have been high enough to draft Pettersson. You have to wonder what scouts were thinking. He is going to be the best player in that draft by a freakin mile. I got the sense that is who the Rangers wanted. I wish they would have trade a lot to move up to get him.

Well, here's how the lines went in practice

Buchnevich-Zibanejad-Fast
Vesey-Hayes-Spooner
Kreider-Howden-Zuccarello
Namestnikov-Chytil-Lettieri

Skjei-McQuaid
Smith-Pionk
Staal-DeAngelo

Claesson-Shattenkirk

Howden gets rewarded for good play
Shatty gets demoted to 7th defenseman for poor play

Yeah, he's all talk

I see nothing wrong with what Quinn is doing, rewarding Howden, slapping and sitting Shattenkirk like he deserved 15 times last year. He is really impressing me with his hands on the controls and not putting up with any shirkers. A coach has to set a bar for players expected effort and commitment and the coach has to be fair and consistent in doling our punishment. And to see him on Shattenkirk already and possibly sitting him next game is great. If the Rangers were in this situation with chewy driving the bus Chytil, Howden or even Pionk would be paying the price, because as I recall vets have more leash. Keep up the great work Mr. Quinn and if that doesn’t wake him up send him to Hartford and carry on with further deserved benchings.

Sitting Shatt is exactly what pansy AV would never do. That is a good sign from the coach. For the record. Zucc has been freakin atrocious to start the year. He continues to make dumb passes when he has high quality shots. More and more I watch him, the more I see him getting dealt at the deadline.

I love the fact that DQ is not allowing players to just coast along. Play or sit!! We've been missing that approach here for years.

Awww. Too bad about JVR. Back to our team. I'm no scout but there is no way Chytil is a center. His faceoff skill is non existent. His defensive game ain't there either. I see Zibanejad and Andersson as our top 2. I don't know enough about Kravtsov and his faceoff ability and defensive game to know if he's a number 1 center or wing. You really don't need a number 1 center if you have Zibanejad, Howden, Andersson and Kravtsov down the middle. That's stout right there. Draws are huge. So many goals come off of them. Hayes I thought would stick around. However, if Howden is going to be this good, he's a guy you could move for a lot. The problem with moving guys like Hayes, Zucc, Staal, Smith, Shattenkirk is if dumbass Gorton won't give more young guys a chance to play now, you will not be good for a long time. They need to get experience now.

Wow! What a record! 2 ZERO 1! Yes it is a time to celebrate! In 10 games there will be more players on the bench than in attendance.

Yes the celebration is stolen from the football games(in Europe they are footballs games not soccer games...no hands game)Its been there for a long time but now i guess hockey is taking it over since you have nothing to show of.
