PENGUINS (10-6-1) at RANGERS (7-6-2)

7:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, TVAS, ATTSN-PT, NHL.TV

The Game

Sidney Crosby will miss his first game of the season when the Pittsburgh Penguins play the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday.

The center and Pittsburgh's leading scorer with 17 points (five goals, 12 assists) is out with a lower-body injury sustained in the third period of a 3-2 shootout win against the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday. He did not travel with the Penguins.

Pittsburgh, which has won back-to-back games and is 4-1-1 since Oct. 26, also is missing defenseman Kris Letang and forward Patric Hornqvist, both out with lower-body injuries.

The Rangers are 4-1-1 in their past six games, all without center Mika Zibanejad, who will miss his seventh consecutive game with an upper-body injury.

Players to watch

Penguins center Evgeni Malkin has points in three straight games (one goal, four assists). He has 160 points (66 goals, 94 assists) in 120 games played without Crosby in the lineup.

Rangers forward Artemi Panarin has points in eight straight games (four goals, eight assists).

They said it

"He's our captain, our leader and everyone looks up to him. He leads by example with his play, so it's never easy when he's out, but it's got to be a team effort for everyone to step up and chip in in his absence. Hopefully he's not out too long." -- Penguins defenseman Justin Schultz on Sidney Crosby

"We've gotten some great goaltending through the stretch and we've been opportunistic on the power play. We've played some really good teams too. We've played some really good teams in the stretch we've gotten points in five of the last six. That being said, I'm dying for [Zibanejad] to come back." -- Rangers coach David Quinn

Penguins projected lineup

Dominik Simon -- Evgeni Malkin -- Bryan Rust

Alex Galchenyuk -- Jared McCann -- Jake Guentzel

Dominik Kahun -- Nick Bjugstad -- Sam Lafferty

Zach Aston-Reese -- Teddy Blueger -- Brandon Tanev

Brian Dumoulin -- John Marino

Marcus Pettersson -- Justin Schultz

Jack Johnson -- Juuso Riikola

Matt Murray

Tristan Jarry

Scratched: Chad Ruhwedel

Injured: Sidney Crosby (lower body), Kris Letang (lower body), Patric Hornqvist (lower body)

Rangers projected lineup

Artemi Panarin -- Ryan Strome -- Jesper Fast

Chris Kreider -- Filip Chytil -- Pavel Buchnevich

Brendan Lemieux -- Brett Howden -- Kaapo Kakko

Greg McKegg -- Lias Andersson -- Brendan Smith

Libor Hajek -- Jacob Trouba

Brady Skjei -- Tony DeAngelo

Ryan Lindgren -- Adam Fox

Alexandar Georgiev

Henrik Lundqvist

Scratched: Micheal Haley

Injured: Mika Zibanejad (upper body), Marc Staal (ankle)

Status report

Penguins coach Mike Sullivan wouldn't confirm if Crosby will miss the game against the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Friday. … Zibanejad isn't expected to play the rest of this week either, when New York plays at the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday and Florida Panthers on Saturday.

Stat pack

The Penguins are 0-for-25 on the power play in 11 games since Oct. 16. They also are 24-for-26 on the penalty kill (92.3 percent) in that same span. … Panarin leads the Rangers with 18 points (eight goals, 10 assists) and has been on the ice for 28 of their 51 goals.

Brooks seems pretty sure Rangers are looking to trade Lias.

Think it’s a big mistake....has 3rd kind 2 way center written all over him.
Give him talent to play with...please.

Smith and McKegg haven’t been bad but could it hurt to give him a run with Top 9 wingers?

Pens are really shorthanded, missing Crosby, Letang. Rangers need to take advantage.

The #7 overall pick shouldn't end up as a 3rd line center. He blows defensive assignments regularly and has shown little offensive ability. Kakko and even Chytil have shown much more promise so far. I'm not promoting a trade, but it wouldn't be so unthinkable given what we've seen so far.

This kid is going to be a superstar!!!

Ridiculous hands but even better ability to get to the scoring areas and be in position to get the puck and score.

Lemieux is the perfect complimentary winger for Kakko. Can protect the kid and also contribute with scoring and passing. It's been a loooong time since the Rangers have had the makings of a young line that has so much potential.

Kappo with the finish but a great pass by Lemieux. Lemieux teases with his talent and has had some good moments this year, I still expect a decent surge in offence from him.

Can see:

Fox beats Murray short side glove. That was a filthy wrister. Great pass by Panarin.

Rangers can be entering a stretch for the next few years where they dominate the Pens who appear to be on the down slide. Which would be real nice after all the Crosby/Malkin years we've had to endure.

Bad shift for him, he's been plagued by inconsistency his whole career. With Zib and Staal out of the lineup, Strome and Kreider are the "veterans" out there. Kinda crazy when you think about it.

Rangers really need to improve their weak side coverage. They get beat too often with passes to the weak side, and they start scrambling to recover.

You want to be popular with teammates make them regroup twice while you stand behind the net Fox. Move it.

Pens obviously got a talking to between periods from Sullivan. They've played harder and more physical this period.

See, Pens point men fire away and create confusion with shots on goal because there is no high pressure. This is a coaching issue.

Probably, but it is hard to tell from watching on TV as he sits and does not always get regular shifts. Getting cold on the bench cannot be good for the guy.

Andersson has to make more use of his ice time. Anyone who has ever played the game should understand that. It’s starting to look like he’s going through the motions, waiting to get moved up the lineup and or given more responsibility. I read a article today where Quinn said Andersson has to earn more ice time, that’s a pretty profound statement from the coach, and you do it by working your ass off, I don’t see that from Andersson. I think his problems start between his ears and resulting attitude. It’s not going to be handed to him, go out and be this gritty player as advertised. If he can’t do it in 8.09 a night send him to Hartford. Nieves or Fogarty will play their ass off for 8.09.

Put a player in a position to fail...and he will fail. And make no mistake, putting a kid out there for 8 minutes a night with two talentless grinders is putting him in a position to fail.

I didn't like Quinn last year, and he's only solidified my low opinion of him so far this year. He is most definitely my least-favorite part of this Rangers team.

All this whining and complaining about Andersson's playing time is getting kinda silly, especially when you consider how the rest of this team is showing signs of growth and improvement.

Andersson was roughly in the same position as Chytil at the end of last season: young players who were high draft picks that were struggling to adapt to the NHL and justify their draft positions. What has changed is that Chytil has made big strides this season and has started to resemble the player that was envisioned when he was drafted. Andersson has not done the same. Not even close.

As far as Andersson's supposed "bum" linemates ...... McKegg, Smith and even Haley all have better Corsi stats than Andersson. Admittedly, I'm not a big Corsi stat guy, but if we're going to dismiss these wingers as "useless" and the reason why Andersson can't break the top 9 in the lineup, I think it's worth mentioning that their stats are better than Andersson's. All three have scored a goal (Andersson hasn't) and Smith has 4 points in 16 games all while playing on the 4th line and killing penalties.

The guy who's really screwing over Andersson so far is the guy looking at Andersson from the mirror in the morning.

He's a change from past free agent signings by NYR: he's young, has years of productivity ahead of him, and is every bit the star he was advertised to be. The real test will be in March and (hopefully) April when the games get more physical and the ice gets smaller. But yeah, so far he's impressive with his skills and vision on the ice.

I think Quinn will feel better about Andersson in his position to fail assignment, when he shows he's the best player on his line, which he's not. Every night McKegg and Smith give a honest effort actually playing pretty well. The guy out of sync is Andersson. He's barking up the wrong tree if he expects to be promoted because he's in a position to fail rather than busting his chops to get moved up. Unfortunately the more I watch him the more it looks like he's bought into the poor me stuck on the fourth line with plugs scenario. And that will just get him a ticket to Hartford.
