Here we go with the faceoffs again... probably as useless as a stat as plus minus.

If you think that you should stop watching hockey, have your balls cut off also. I can't tell you how many big games Stepan has cost us with his incompetent faceoff losses. If your comment wasn't dumb enough. You then go faceoffs aren't useless but the stat is. He asswipe. The stat is all about winning faceoffs.

You can't tell me how many big games he's lost with an incompetent faceoff loss because there aren't any.

Go ahead, find one.

Smitty is a UFA, and couldn't be protected. Technically, he's not Ranger property to protect.

The NHL really screwed everyone here...They decided to add another team...Charged them hundreds of millions of dollars in "vig" fees....Then F'd the rest of the teams by making them give up players.

They could have protected Smith, he's the Rangers til July 1. Unless the Rangers offer him the moon, he will be looking at July 1 offers, so not much sense in protecting him.

Yeah The Rangers could protect him, but why? Vegas picks him only for The Rangers to sign him July 1st anyway?

He wants to be a Ranger, and The Rangers want him... it's as good as done. Vegas picking Smith would be best case scenario next to maybe Staal or Holden

Maybe. Maybe not. Money talks on July 1, and that's the danger of letting players get to it. Smith is going to get offers. A team will probably offer more than he's worth. No agent is going to have agreed to anything with the Rangers at this point in time. Smith will have no strings attached on July 1. Brandon Prust and Benoit Pouliot got away on July 1st, because they got the cash. It could happen and very well might with Smith.
Assuming the Rangers knew they were dumping Girardi weeks ago, and surely they did, they should have had a deal in place to resign Smith and done so when they let Girardi go. And then protected Smith instead of Holden. It would have been great for the Rangers if Vegas took Holden over Fast, Raanta, or Lindbergh. Gorton is going to have to answer some questions if Smith gets away.

If I'm the GM of Vegas, I take the players who have the highest value... They don't need to finalize their roster with this draft

They still get just as much of a chance at the UFAs

But they'll also be in a position to make trades with the value they get in the draft.

Maybe they don't get a top line center in this draft, but they pick up enough assets to trade for one.... Any position that needs filling can be compensated for via trades and free agency.

So if I'm looking at The Rangers roster, and I'm asking myself which player has the most value, I choose Annti Raanta

Maybe I keep him as a potential starter (if I didn't take MAF... they will) Maybe he's my more than serviceable backup...

Or maybe I trade him for the highest offer to fill a need.... Teams need goaltending, and Raanta would challenge for the starting role on a lot of teams

Re: Smith, no sense in protecting him.

Vegas is currently talking to RFAs for purposes of offer sheet, (probably not going to happen but they do have the draft picks...) and also upcoming UFA. If they choose to sign Smith in the next week, Smith becomes the selection from the NYR. This would be a dumb move by the Knights, because they could always agree in principle to a deal with Smith, and then not sign him until July 1, and then still have their choice of Lindberg/Fast/Grabner/Raanta. So it's highly unlikely they sign any UFAs before July 1 unless it's someone they absolutely have to have.

Even if there are side deals in place, there is a lot of stupidity on this list.

There are going to be a good amount of side deals in place that we don't know about yet. I have inside information on what the Isles are going to do. Their protection list doesn't matter, they have deal in place. Vegas wants to build for the future, not just now. They will probably end up with 3-5 first round draft picks after Wednesday.

. No oral agreement made with the Rangers or Vegas will not include a out clause for Smith to go to another team if he receives a better offer on July 1. He holds all the cards. Agents use leverage to increase their players financial gain and their commission. If Vegas or the Rangers are going to wait til after July 1 to sign him it's going to cost them, probably a matching clause for best offer on July 1, or the prior agreed to contract price with Vegas or the Rangers, whichever is higher. His agent knows Smith could be the guy July 1st who gets a bunch of offers and gets overpaid. They will agree to nothing that takes away that potential a week or less before that happening.
The point here is if Vegas or the Rangers want him at a set price they better get him signed, because his agent has a reputation on the line here, and leaving a offer from philiadelphia or whoever with three more years and $500,000 per on the table July 1, because of a prior agreement with the Rangers or Vegas, will make him look very bad. The Agent is not putting himself in that position.

My son goes to school with the son of one of their evaluators. We were talking about the expansion draft yesterday while the kids were playing in the park. Out of respect for the person who provided me this info, I can't divulge the specifics. It's a deal they made and the Isles are not losing any name you may know. My point of my post was to point out in LV wanting to build and is looking and building for their future.

Don't know about the Rangers, but my friend thinks if there is no deal in place they will take either Grabner or Raanta.

I agree....but maybe a side deal not to take Raanta would coincide with the Rangers dealing Raanta to someone else.....seems possible.

It's insane for all these teams willing to deal first rounder's so Vegas doesn't take ONE player from their teams.

Agreed, From the Rangers point of view they are certainly not going to lose a player worth a first round pick and nobody that's irreplaceable.

The only way I see Quebec getting a team is if Florida or another Eastern team moves there. I do expect one more team in the West, though not sure where they'd put it.
