"I would like to thank Dan for everything he has given of himself to the Rangers over 11 seasons. He has been one of the key contributors to our success over the past decade. We have the utmost respect for Dan and wish him all the best going forward."

As I have been saying for 2 years, this is the first offseason where it makes financial sense (from a cap standpoint) to buy out Girardi, so this hardly comes as a surprise. This is the breakdown via capfriendly:

SALARY      CAP HIT         ACTUAL COST SAVINGS        BUYOUT CAP HIT
2017-18 $4,000,000 $5,500,000 $1,111,111 $2,888,889 $2,611,111
2018-19 $3,000,000 $5,500,000 $1,111,111 $1,888,889 $3,611,111
2019-20 $3,000,000 $5,500,000 $1,111,111 $1,888,889 $3,611,111
2020-21 $0          $0              $1,111,111 -$1,111,111 $1,111,111
2021-22 $0          $0              $1,111,111 -$1,111,111 $1,111,111
2022-23 $0          $0              $1,111,111 -$1,111,111 $1,111,111

Basically we save G's $5.5m in the next 3 years, and we are charged with dead cap space of the far right column for the next 6 years.

Statement from Girardi:

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the New York Rangers organization for giving me the opportunity to fulfill my childhood dream of playing in the National Hockey League. I would also like to thank James Dolan, Glen Sather, Jim Schoenfeld, Jeff Gorton, John Rosasco, Jason Vogel, all of the coaches and front office staff, Jim Ramsay and his amazing training staff, the equipment staff, and all the Madison Square Garden employees for making my past 11 years so special.

I have spent one-third of my life as a New Yorker and as a New York Ranger. New York will always be our second home. I started my family here, got married to my wife Pam, and had our two children, Landon and Shaye. We have been fortunate to meet so many great people and our kids have made so many friends.

I also wanted to thank all of the Blueshirt faithful. You are one of the best and most passionate fan bases in the NHL. I appreciate your support over the years.

I poured my heart and soul into this team for the past 11 seasons and I enjoyed every minute of it. I want to acknowledge that the Rangers are a first class organization who have always treated our players in a first class fashion. My family and I are most grateful for the way we have been treated during our stay in New York.

Lastly, I want to acknowledge how great it has been to play alongside all of my teammates, including some Hall of Famers, for the past 11 years. I am going to miss all of the friends I have made along the way, but my family and I are looking forward to the next chapter in our lives. I wish the Rangers good luck and success in the future.

Sincerely,
Dan

So with Girardi buyout and Klein possibly retiring, NYR will have freed up $5.8M next season, and then $1.9M for the next two seasons...but then will have $1.11M hit for the following three seasons.

The warrior is done here:

https://www.nhl.com/rangers/news/a-message-from-dan-girardi/c-289925...

Not too many Rangers gave as much as he gave of himself since game 1. He never took a single shift off. I believe he has played more games than any other player in the NHL since his 1st game in the league. One of my fav Rangers post 2004.

A class act all the way!!!

Girardi has indicated he will continue to pursue an NHL career as a UFA. Does not intend to retire.

Yep. Thanks to Girardi. One of the few Rangers who never dogged it. Played hurt. Always remembered he wasn't drafted. After watching Leetch dog it for years, hold the team up for ransom every contract, this was a true team guy. Next move, get rid of that lazy dog, Stepan who still has made no effort to improve on faceoffs.

Again...Nice screen name... shows how much you know
Leetch 1129 GP 240 G 741 A 981 Pts ...Best D man in NYR History SC Ring holder Calder winner, Con Smythe winner, Norris winner (2). Maybe Girardi never dogged it...But he sure did know how to feed Kings the puck in OT in the SCF etc...and become a liability on the ice

I know more about hockey they you will ever know you dumbazzzz. One, Girardi played hurt badly in the finals. Two, if you want to know how much Leetch dogged it. Try looking at his numbers all the years the Rangers were struggling, then the one year when they finally were in close to the playoffs. He was like a different player. Try remembering how much he held the team up for ransom every time his contract was up. I would try to educate you but it's obvious you are a f'n moron with no knowledge about the past of this team. My guess is you are fat, dumb and one of those azzzzwipes in our fan base who just remember Leetch in 1994. Many of the other years he had his head up his azzzz when the team needed him the most. From 1997-1998 to 1999-2000 Leetch was an f'n embarrassment. He just collected a paycheck and barely showed up. Same from the start of the 2001 season to the start of 2003 season. As usual, you're another dumbazzz who looks at overall stats and has no clue what you watching in a hockey game.

Hey, come on, you can't put the 2 names in the same sentence. Leetch never dogged it, ever. He played on some bad Rangers teams where he was the only player worth turning on the games. After '97 the team was a joke, literarly the punch line of every joke in the league until '04. That's not taking anything away from Danny G. But, the 2 names don't belong in the same sentence. Mess said Leetch is the greatest Ranger of them all. Leetch won playoff MVP, not Mess, not Gravy, not Richter. Big Lou in that Devils series said, it is not Messier that killed us, it is Leetch, we had no solution for him & stopping him from the backend.

The reason Danny G won't play into his late 30s is the way he played for this team & gave it all to this team from day 1. If he ends up on some team & they play here, the Rangers should & I think will honor him as they should no doubt about it. Him & Hank represent the Rangers & the longest serving post 2004 lockout.

But, all this being said, management's job & responsibility is to do what they think is best for the team.

Oh please. You people are in such f'n denial about players on the 94 team. Leetch was a total dog for years. Messier was a complete A-Hole with his contract. Graves dogged it for years. He sucked for like 2-3 years then miraculously scored 38 goals in his contract year. You tools were the same imbeciles that were begging to sign that greedy pig Callahan to a new contract. Thank God they traded that azzzwipe.

'It's the typical, dumbazzzz Rangers fan character trait. You fall in love with any player who wins you a title and ignore all the years when they dog it, hold the team up for ransom in a contract and then can't believe when they are traded. As Neil Smith once said. "Am I supposed to pay forever for 1994" Leetch should have been traded during the 1998 season.

To put Girardi and Leetch in the same conversation is dumbass city..... 1997 team that lost to the Flyers in the ECF was a team on its last leg... and Leetch was already a Ranger 10 years.....As we all know the team sucked all the way to post lockout after that.

Comedy! Thanks for the laughs! He carried the team from his rookie year for 10 years. Then, post '97 educate yourself & take a look @ those rosters with over-the-hill bums & coaches that were changed more often than some change underwear. Yeah, like Leetch could do anything about that, the players that he was given to surround him & to play with all those years. Comedy. Comparing a HofFmer, 1 of the best d-man of all time probably Top 20 d-man of all time. Because people that 'dog' make it to the HofF. Comedy!

Post 97 NYR team was an embarrassment until post lockout....this where Neil Smith trading away our entire future ...Weight, Amonte, Marchand, Nordstrom etc...came home to roost ....and to this day I still hate Smith because he had no backbone and caved to Keenan's demands...which were 1 season quick fix bs
