D’Angelo is a 21-year-old defenceman who can move the puck and quarterback the power play, but also comes with baggage. He’s been suspended for abuse of officials, was suspended in junior for a slur directed at a teammate

I like him already

And Stepan is NOT a #1 Center....what is Scott Cullen using to get high?

Ah but he was and has been for the Rangers and will be for the yotes. Which is why at this point I think the return to the Rangers is light. For whatever reason he has tanked it the last couple of years and I'm not sad to see him go. But he is what he is and the only way the Rangers win this trade is a real good pick at 7 and Deangelo eventually ending up top three at least down the road. The positive I see in this is Clark undoubtedly. knows him well and had a lot of input into this kids worth, and what Clark thinks can be done with 7. And the growing trade value of cap room I suppose has a lot of value in the Rangers mind.

This is a big time cap move. I am sure there will be other trades and now the Rangers are not limited by the cap. If there was no cap this trade never happens.

I remember getting flambe'd a few years ago for saying Stepan wasn't even top 20 as a first line center. He's slow lazy can't skate and can't win faceoffs. Other than that he is ok. Teach him to bitch at the KING

I'll miss the Stepan that was a clutch scorer in the playoffs (Game 7 vs Caps) and a great passer who saw the whole ice well.

I won't miss the Stepan that I saw the past season and a half. Not sure why there was such a sharp fall off, he's not that old. Maybe he's got a chronic injury or he just wasn't as motivated and needed a change of address. Heck, playing for AV can do that.

Best of luck to a classy Ranger who gave us a lot over the years.

I don't blame the player at the start when he gets lazy. You work hard at your job in the beginning, if your good at it you do well, and after a while it gets stale, and invariably you start to cheat on your commitment and effort, it's human nature. Make no mistake Stepan was on float for most of the last two years. And I would bet money Vigneault never hauled his ass into his office and ripped him a new one. Why so sure because he never got benched, demoted or removed from favoured power play assignments. Vigneault let down Stepan by not getting in his face and demanding he get his act together.
Stepan was talented enough to get by on less than 100% effort, but in his case he turned off the effort a little to much, for it not to be noticeable to anyone who was objective, and not mixing up reality with efforts from his better days.
Because he did not get motivated by his coach, he ended up getting traded. I think this is a large smear on the Vigneault resume, and worry when Miller, Kreider, and Hayes, show some early warning signs of the same lack of intensity and commitment on a regular basis. Who's next to be given up on and traded as a guy not playing hard.? I wanted the Stepan of the Cup Final year back, Not the guy the coach let Stephan evolve into. And spare me the it's on Stepan argument. He has a responsibility, but it's on the coach 100% to motivate his team. Look at any job description for a coach. Usually line one on duties.
I didn't hear any Vigneault tire pumping by Gorton after their end of the season meetings, maybe I missed it, correct me if I'm wrong. But maybe Ruff is here because Gorton and company have concluded Vigneault is on a short leash. And better to have a replacement in the house and contractually controlled, considering the meagre replacement pool.

All said is right about Step, also 1 of the few vocal leaders on the team along with Hank. But, it was time to move on from Step, & I believe he needs it also, a change of teams. I wish him continued success, a big part of the Rangers success all these years.

Nice move by the kid, DeAngelo:

Great to speak with Phil Esposito today, called to ask if I can wear #77 in NY. Thanks for the Ok Phil. Honor to wear it after you! #NYR

Good first impression. I have a feeling that I'm gonna like this kid once he starts playing for NYR. Hopefully AV won't bench him and shorten his ice time and ruin any chance the kid had here. Listen to Coach Ruff, kid.

Only problem I see is that AV has serious utilization issues for offensive defensemen, and likewise Ruff prefers the hard nosed warrior defensemen as well. Which is all well and good, but signs already point to DeAngelo not getting any playing time because they'll bench him when he makes a mistake.

Hope I'm wrong on this one but I'm usually not. He's going to get his ass nailed to the bench most nights.

Your going to have to do some looking for Ruff having had access to, let alone using lots of hard nosed warrior types over his career. That's a stretch, to say the least. The truth is he's developed a lot of no name types, many not overly physical dman. He can coach them any way they can play, unlike tunnel vision double mint. He's here to develop DeAngelo and Skjei, and maybe Graves as a possible number 7.
