If we wanted a 36 year old forward. We would of kept Stepan.

How did I miss this? Nice.

He's here because his only NHL supporter Michel Therien put a bug in his buddy Vigneaults ear.

Hmmm...I'm picking up a pattern here....same thing happened when Rangers got Holden.....Roy calls Viggy crying "you got my defenseman" and Holden became a top 4 guy.

I'd bet money on it. There are articles about Therrien's favouritism of Desharnais. Vigneault is always gushing about his buddy Therrien. Do the math. For the Rangers to be sitting here end of August and Desharnais pencilled in as the THIRD center is asinine. Vigneault has already gassed Miller from opportunity to play center, so here we freaking go.

Umm, not to appear as though I'm defending AV but have you seen our center depth? Desharnais is pretty clearly the third line center at this point. The only other options are Andersson (0 NHL games) Nieves (1 NHL game) Paul Carey (32 NHL games)?

Moving Miller to C is clearly not something they are going to do.

I said Desharnais is number three .?? Your point is? I said Miller was not going to play centre because double mint said so. Again your point is?

I think we may underestimate the offense that our back end will bring this year.

McDonagh... Skjei... Shattenkirk.... DeAngelo.... Smith... and well no probably not Staal... but 5 of the 6 defensemen will all be coached to be the 4th man in more often this season compared to seasons' past...

And all of them have the ability, skill, and speed to be effective doing jusf that. Nashville proved last year that a strong offensive defense is a winning combination.

Even with Staal, I like the new look of the defense. This may turn out to be the strong point of this team for the next few years.

New York Rangers should offer sheet Andreas Athanasiou
by David Bruce 2 weeks ago

Andreas Athanasiou, the Red Wings young speedster, is nowhere close to a new deal with Detroit. The Rangers should break the taboo and put forward an offer sheet.

Offer sheets are a rarity in the NHL these days. The New York Rangers have not tendered one since the 3-year, $21 million offer sheet to Joe Sakic in 1997. No team has offered one since 2013. They have become the subject of taboo among general managers.

Most of them get matched; the only one in recent history that wasn’t was the Dustin Penner contract. While Penner isn’t exactly a superstar, that shows how rarely it occurs. Enter Andreas Athanasiou.

The New York Rangers need a middle six center to fill out their depth. The Detroit Red Wings cannot afford to pay Athanasiou anything close to what he’ll desire. Athanasiou is currently mulling over contract offers from KHL teams. It’s a situation that is almost begging for an offer sheet to be made.

Athanasiou is young, incredibly fast and super skilled. He scored 18 goals and 11 assists last year for Detroit. If you watch the highlights, there is not a single goal he scored that wasn’t a thing of beauty. Though not (yet) a star player, he has a skill set that gets butts in seats, and out of them, too.

This style of play would fit the Rangers system like a glove. Surely, Athanasiou would prefer to play in North America, where he is used to playing, his family is nearby, and the league is superior. However, what would it take to sign him?

The only way you are going to get a guy like this is overpay the cash. And then get nailed for the draft picks. The Rangers need a dominant number one center. Tavares is the only one on the horizon. I'd rather see them keep their options open to see what he does. I'd be very surprised to see him resign with the Pilses. Trading Nash at some point this season will set the Rangers up with some additional assets and additional cap space to take a run at him.

It's my understanding that it cost a second round pick to tender an offer sheet, and word is the KHL is offering 3mil for a one year deal but he really would rather play in the NHL, why not throw an offer of say 2.4

I wanna say we have somewhere north of 3 million in cap space, so I guess "why not try" is my question

You gotta think that the Wings would match a $2.4 offer. Haven't really seen the actual dollars that the Wings are willing to do, but $2.4 would seem matchable.

Athanasiou, 23, is a restricted free agent without arbitration rights. Entertaining an offer from another league is leverage in talks with the Wings. Ak Bars has offered Athanasiou a deal for one year in the range of $2.5-$3 million. The Wings have offered Athanasiou two years at $1.9 million per season.

the reality of an offer sheet;

1) Only nine offer sheets have been tendered to restricted free agents since 1998 and only one wasn’t matched (Anaheim let Dustin Penner go to Edmonton in 2007). and
2) The compensation is lousy (a second-round pick for an offer that averages between $1.9 million and $3.9 million a season).

I think you try the trade route instead of an offer sheet. Offer sheets sound pretty sexy until someone wants to do it to your RFA. That's why they're relatively rare in the league - what goes around comes around. You don't want to be taking a hard line in negotiations with, say, Buchnevich, hoping he'll come down from his demands, and then Detroit comes in and offer sheets him and you get a second round pick as compensation. As a GM you have to work with these people every day. Don't want to burn bridges unless you know your own timer is about to go off.

Now once you open that door to a trade, his value will be dictated by what others are willing to give up for him, not what an offer sheet would return. Every team in the league would give up a second and a depth defenseman to get him at $2.5m so that's not going to work. Remember, even if he goes to the KHL, the Wings still retain his NHL rights. Once they trade him he's gone.

He's dynamic young center, sure, but he scored about as much as Vesey did last year (in fewer games). I don't mind that there's potential for improvement there. I'd look to trade from a position of strength (young defensemen) instead. Personally I'd see if they want DeAngelo straight up. We have a number of young defensemen on the bubble, and we need centers. A highly talented ex-first rounder on an ELC should be appealing. That would make the Stepan-Raanta deal make more sense also, getting a 23 year old Center back versus a defenseman. Your defense still looks like McD-Shattenkirk, Skjei-Smith, Staal-Pionk/Bereglazov/Graves, even if Holden's gone. So you still have decent depth with your young defensemen.

Then up front you have Zbad Hayes Athanasiou and then one of Andersson, Desharnais, Nieves as your 4C. You now have legitimate top-9 NHL level depth and a 4C spot where a kid can gain experience, or if they're not ready, you plug in Desharnais.
