I was thnking he'd be right around $2m so anything less is good for the bottom line.

Same here. My thinking was 2 for Fast and 5 for Ziban on a longer non-bridge deal. I had 7 mill all in for these two.

Kreider, Hayes and Stepan should have paid attention to how he plays in the playoffs. They might have done something.

If AV uses Fast correctly, as the 4th line RW, I have no issues with this move at all. The trouble starts when AV tried to put him in positions he doesn't belong in (the top 9). Use him correctly please AV.

That's a great point. But eventually AV does AV.

Also, if Fast played on the 4th line with, say, Cizikas and Clutterbuck, then I'd have no problem as well.

This will be a very telling year for AV. Shatt needs to be with McDonagh. Skjei and Smith need to be the 2nd pair and play 2nd pair minutes and in 2nd pair situations. If here, Staal (and Holden) must only be used in 3rd pair minutes and 3rd pair situations. Shatt needs to be on the 1st PP unit unlike Yandle. And McD/Shatt and Skjei/Smith must be the PK D pairs. If Staal plays in any situations outside of sheltered 3rd pair minutes I will be very angry.

Upfront Fast needs to be on the 4th line, that's it. And Deshar needs to be on the 4th line, that's it.

I will be watching AV very closely this season.

Shatt needs to be with McDonagh.

That will be AV's undoing.

And McD/Shatt and Skjei/Smith must be the PK D pairs.

Sure...let's take a player other coaches will not use on the PK and give him top PK minutes. This will contribute to AV's undoing quicker than Fast being in top 9.

Ruff will be coaching by November.

And play him against other teams best, when previous teams sheltered him. What could possibly go wrong.

They stopped using him last year. He always played the PK before that.

I'm told by Blues fans that it wasn't only last year. Even so, there had to be a good reason two respectable coaches wouldn't do it.

Maybe unlike our coach with McDonagh, they decided not to use him on the PK and the PP when they had other people that could do the job. It's not like St. Louis didn't have a good defensive group.

I never really like a player who can't score(for a hockey player it is the one of many things he has to know how, regardless of position he plays- except goalie of course - and this guy is just that)Rico Fata

Yes and no.

2013-14 Used sparingly (Hitchcock)
2014-15 Used regularly (Hitchcock)
2015-16 Used regularly (Hitchcock)
2016-17 Hardly used at all (Hitchcock, Yeo, Trotz)

Also consider that a decision to use a player as a penalty killer has more considerations than simply how good he is at killing penalties. Let's say you have two defensemen roughly equal in their ability to kill penalties. One is your first pair defenseman and he also plays PP, the other, is a third pair defenseman who otherwise does not have any regular special teams duties. Which one do you play on the PK? The third pair guy, obviously, so you save your first pair guy for 5v5 and PP. The fact that first pair guy does not play PK, does not mean he's not a good PKer.

There are obvious exceptions to this - there are some guys on the team that play in all situations, because they're just that good. (McDonagh, Shea Weber, Subban, etc) Shattenkirk may or may not be one of those guys for the Rangers, but assuming he's a bad on the PK based on usage, is false.

No two NHL players are equal in ability on the pk, the pp or regular strength. To suggest so on the pk or otherwise is naive. A coach will always have a preference. Unless of course your coaching, the everybody plays minor hockey stuff. The simple reason his minutes on the pk per season are mostly on the lower end for the defense is the team had better options. Coaches play their best, if Shattenkirk was the best option he'd be on the ice. To suggest NHL coaches don't play a viable penalty killing option, saving him for a power play possibility or 5-5 play is another stretch. The best time to play your worst defensemen is after killing a penalty because the other teams powerplay units (best offensive players) are usually recuperating on the bench. It's called giving them minutes. Shattenkirk's St. Louis stats are interesting and give real indications of some issue's as to why he's gone from there. His PP stats are excellent. No other St.Louis dman close til this season. His pk minutes are a bit all over the map, suggesting various levels of trust, by different coaches. But we won't know what he's all about til we see him, some players blossom under a new coach, some wilt. There are tremendous expectations for him, go from a mostly second or sometimes third pair guy to a first pair dman, and a penalty killer unless you think, Staal, DeAngelo, and Holden are similar or a better option.

Staal's always PKed.

It'll be him and McDonagh
Skjei and Smith
Doing most of the heavy lifting short handed. Unless Staal does end up being traded, then Shatt will get the PK time

McD is going to be seeing a lot of minutes

McD will always see lots of minutes, no news there. And you think Staal is better on the pk than Shattenkirk?
