His cap hit comes off the books officially. Wouldn't be surprised to see him back with the organization at some point, in some capacity.

Kevin Klein has officially announced his retirement from the NHL.
Klein released a statement via the Rangers that said:

I would like to thank both the Nashville Predators and New York Rangers organizations for giving me the opportunity to fulfill my dream of playing in the NHL. Thank you to the fans of both cities for their appreciation. I couldn't have been happier to play in front of you. I will miss all the friends I've made along the way, from the staff to the guys I've played with.

I'd like to thank my parents for everything they have done for me and for their constant love and support. Most importantly, my wife Jodi and our boys, Joseph and Oliver, who have sacrificed the most over the years. I am looking forward to many great years with my extended family.

Again, Thank You.

Klein's cap hit of $2.9 million will come off of the Rangers salary cap.

From the Rangers release:
•Acquired by the Rangers from Nashville in exchange for Michael Del Zotto on January 22, 2014.
•Klein skated in 224 career regular season games with the Blueshirts over parts of four seasons (2013-14 - 2016-17), registering 22 goals and 50 assists for 72 points, along with a plus-49 rating and 75 penalty minutes.
•From the time he made his debut with the Rangers on January 23, 2014 through the end of the 2016-17 season, Klein led Rangers defensemen in even strength goals (22) and game-winning goals (eight), ranked second among Rangers defensemen in goals, points, plus/minus rating, and hits (414), and ranked third among team defensemen in assists.
•During his three full seasons as a Ranger (2014-15 - 2016-17), Klein tied for 10th among NHL defensemen in plus/minus rating (plus-45) and game-winning goals (eight), and tied for 16th among NHL defensemen in even strength goals (21).
•Klein established career-highs in goals (nine) and points (26) during the 2014-15 season and tied both of those career-highs in 2015-16. In addition, he is one of only two Rangers defensemen who have tallied nine or more even strength goals in at least two seasons since 1986-87 (along with Brian Leetch).
•Klein recorded two overtime goals during the 2014-15 season, becoming the third Rangers defenseman to tally at least two overtime goals in one season since the NHL reimplemented an overtime period in 1983-84.

It's believed that Klein may be retiring from the NHL to pursue a career playing in Europe.

most lopsided trade in Ranger history....even better than getting McD in the Gomez deal.

Injuries, plus, continued misuse by AV. Same problem as has plagued Staal, Girardi, Boyle the past few years.

To be fair though, AV had a defense full of 5/6/7 defensemen and had to fill 5 slots.

After officially retiring from the NHL exactly a week ago today, Kevin Klein has decided to continue his hockey career and signed a one-year deal with the Zurich Lions of the Swiss National League.

Thank you Kleiner, the day you replaced Del "Notto" was a great day. What a great great trade for the Rangers. See you in the spring.
