Adam Herman speculated on some unsigned college UFA that the Rangers could be interested (a la Vesey, Hayes). No rumors at this point but a better option than the NHL retreads. All set to be UFA on August 15.

Alex Kerfoot
Vesey's former linemate at Harvard, a NJD 2012 5th round pick. Skilled offensive centerman. Should be able to compete for a bottom 6 job. If not, good young depth in AHL for injury callup.

Evan Cowley
Goalie out of DU, Panthers' 4th round pick in 2013. Another big goalie - 6'4" 201#.

Will Butcher
Hobey Baker winner, LHD. Another pick out of DU, the Avalanche's 5th rounder in 2013. He is the biggest name of out the college UFA crop and is probably not signing with Colorado. I don't see that we have room for another LHD he probably wants to go somewhere that he can play right away.

Vesey wanted his Harvard degree, good on him. Kerfoot would be a good fit in the loop. Good opportunity on the Rangers and certainly a excellent opportunity to excell in Hartford and be the callup guy. Me thinks the Rangers will be pursuing this guy hard.

Dominic Toninato
Leafs 5th round pick, 2012

Captain of the UMD Bulldogs, who lost to DU in the NCAA final. Forward with good size, shoots left. Decent numbers, nothing great. But, very consistent throughout his college career. Well rounded center who can play in all situations. Decent speed.

Leafs declined to sign him, rather than the other way around. He wasn't even given an invite to Leafs prospect camp. (Not sure if that is the symptom or the reason). Part of this is due to the fact that the Leafs are close to their 50 contracts especially after signing Marleau. They offered Toninato an AHL-only deal but he declined. Toronto has a lot of young talent and finds itself unable to sign them all to contracts, so some decisions have to be made. Under other circumstances they would have liked to have kept him.

Butcher is talking to Buffalo, NJ, Vegas. He has a keen interest in ChiLand as well. ****tsburgh is watching and has interest. Can't find a thing on any of the others. Rangers are known to be scouring these unsigned guys. Three decent looking centers available. They need to go after all 3 to get some depth back in the system

Kerfoot met with his hometown Canucks a couple of days ago. He hasn't signed there yet so I'm guessing they're probably out. Don't have any other reports of other meetings. Canucks also have a number of young centers who would probably slot above him on the depth chart so breaking in there would probably be difficult. Aside from that, it's pretty wide open.

Don't believe #Isles are in on two other college FAs, D Will Butcher or F Alex Kerfoot.

Except for the Islanders of course.

Well of course not. In 2 years they may be playing on a pond in a park. Grass seats, rain or shine with hot dog and ice cream trucks for refreshments.

Actually, the Piles are expected to announce the building of an arena on the grounds of Belmont Racetrack very soon. Some little red tape supposedly holding up things. Something to do with NYS Senate approving a measure.

My understanding is that this is much earlier in the process than imminent. The state has not even accepted (let alone approved) an RFP to redevelop that area. Let alone, having a developer come along and say they'll build an arena there, and then having the Islanders lease it.

Still certainly a possibility, but the truth is that they have 2 more years in Barclays (and will certainly be gone after that) and need to find a new home. I think even in a best case scenario they may not be able to begin play there in 2019. Maybe they manage to extend their Barclays lease a year while a new arena is finished. Things not looking good for them. Quebec Icelanders?

Also, regarding Kerfoot - Brooks is reporting Rangers as a finalist, and Kerfoot will make his decision soon, "no later than Tuesday."

http://nypost.com/2017/08/21/rangers-a-finalist-for-harvard-stud-wh...

I'd stop short of calling him a "stud" but I'd much rather play the odds and have him in the mix with Desharnais, Andersson, Nieves, for a bottom 6 spot C, than without.

Yes stud is a stretch. But he'd be a nice get, bottom end depth, and he's got to like his chances against Desharnais and company.

Desharnais, despite his size, is a legitimate bottom-6 NHLer. Past that we have unknowns, Nieves who played half a year in AHL and was injured the other half, and Andersson who is 18 and has no NA pro experience. If nothing else he would be another young option at center versus a 29-year old journeyman. I'll take that any day.

Also, if that is the plan, let 2 or 3 kids battle it out for a center spot, I will give Gorton credit for letting that happen, rather than going out and signing a Matt Lombardi or a Matt Cullen as a "veteran presence". That in itself would be a nice change.

If all the kids all are terrible and we need a "veteran center" then we can always sign one in October.

Stud at the college level isn't a stretch.... The captain of Harvard... mentioned as a Hobey Baker contender....

Many see Kerfoot as an NHL talent with top 6 potential.

Maybe not a stud NHL talent, but he's a top dog NCAA FA, no doubt

Desharnais was a Therrien pet. Thats old news, and lots of players can play in the NHL. Lots can only play on mediocre teams, because they are not good enough to win with. He is one you don't win with. Opponents are licking their chops to line up against him.

No argument with stud at the college level. And about as good as available from the pool available.

I haven't seen or read anything that speculates he has top 6 NHL potential. Scouts were even lukewarm on describing Vesey in that light. Most have Kerfoot as top AHL/bottom 6 NHL level talent, which is fine for now, plus he has a few years to get even better. Kerfoot sweepstakes < Vesey sweepstakes < Hayes sweepstakes. Even if we sign him I'm not going to saddle him with expectations like that.

Supposedly down to NYR, VAN, and "mystery team," rumored to be Dallas.

Realistic is very happy if he makes the team. He just turned 23 and that's getting up there. Reality is most college players that age that don't break camp with the big club never make it. Most end up in Hartford, see the mile long list of college UFA' the Rangers have signed. Time and age is against a improvement window in Hartford.

Yep, his upside is his age but the downside is his age.

At 23 other guys have gone through years of junior, then a couple years of pro in AHL, and probably already had a year+ NHL under their belt. Kerfoot, like Vesey and Hayes and to a lesser degree Kreider, would need to prove himself, and fast, in order to not get left behind.

8:55PM: Kerfoot is reportedly down to the Rangers and Sharks, according to Arthur Staple of Newsday.

8:42PM: Darren Dreger tweets that Kerfoot will make his decision "soon" and that the final five teams he is considering are the Canucks, Rangers, Sharks, Isles and Avs.

If that's really the final list, then I like our odds.

Sharks are stacked down the middle, I don't see that working out.

Look at the Canucks - Sedin, Horvat, Gagner, Sutter are pretty much guaranteed NHL spots. The weakest of those 4 is either Sutter, who had 17 goals last year, or Gagner, who may not be able to match his career high. Still he had 18 goals and 50 points last year. Beyond that on the bubble, they have Gaunce and Dahlen, (2012 1st rounder and 2016 second round) a journeyman in Chaput... Kerfoot has an uphill battle in Vancouver.

Isles and Avs... Good luck Alex if you want to sign up for that. He would get bigger minutes, faster, but would not be put in a position to succeed in either place.

Still pleasantly surprised the Pens are not in the mix. They have similar center issues that we do.

Multiple rumors have Kerfoot signing with Rangers last night, but nothing confirmed. Of course rumors can just build off rumors so keep that in mind. However I am not seeing any conflicting rumors that he's signed elsewhere so...back to square one.

I think if he was signing in Vancouver it would have been a done deal his home town and all. The Rangers are not going to be offering much Vancouver wouldn't match contract wise, so its probably about perceived opportunity.. The opening to step in in the third, fourth center role in New York is there. You never know with a guy like this, he has a lot of attributes double mint likes, and would have a reasonable shot at the third line spot. He's a skilled offensive type that competes, I'm hoping the Rangers snag him.
