“I’m still only 19. I think people forget that. I’m still a young guy. People talk about defencemen taking longer. In my exit interview earlier (Sunday with Rangers’ officials), they told me they want me to play 25-30 minutes a night and be the guy.”

I still believe this kid's going to be a stud. He has all the tools, but is inexperienced and makes a lot of mistakes. Better he gets 25-30 minutes as Windsor's #1, than 3rd pairing on the Whalepack. I'm not worried. I think he's still 2 -3 years away. Never rush a young defenseman.

McDonagh drafted 2007

Doesn't play on NHL till 2010-11 season

Sean Day drafted 2016

People think he's a bust by 2017-18

He better be on the pack next year, though....

The Pack list 7 defensemen on their roster. Alexei Bereglazov, Brandon Crawley, John Gilmour, Ryan Graves, Garrett Noonan, Vince Pedrie, and Neal Pionk. I have to assume the Rangers will sign Crawley. He's 20, and with 3 years already spent in the OHL, he should play in the AHL.

He got the rare exception thing and still is nowhere near ready.....Other 3 exception guys made it to the NHL quickly. He sucked in the Summer showcase

There's really no point in ragging on him at this point. His trade value is low but his potential is still unbelievable. It will remain that way until he either makes the NHL and is a star for us, or he becomes a bust. That's exactly why you DON'T trade him. If he's going to bust out, let him bust with us.

Exactly, Day's problem for years is that people have used the exceptional status tag as a comparison point. It's not. It only means they were good enough as a 15 year old to play in Junior. He's 19 years old. You can count the number of teenage defensemen in the NHL on one hand (2). There are only 5 regular defenseman age 20 or younger.

He needs to not only lead the OHL offensively, but needs to round out his defensive and positioning game so that he's dominant at both ends of the ice. That stuff is easier to learn at lower levels and tells me he still needs some pretty fundamental coaching. Yes I am disappointed he's not in the AHL. I would even say, it's concerning. But concerning does not mean you get trigger happy and trade away a prospect with this much potential. For what? A third round pick, at best? Makes no sense.

Macdavid, Ekblad and Tavares were the other 3 Exceptional status guys....all 3 of those guys were #1 picks in the draft. Either someone misjudged Days talent....or he is just not all that...hence, not getting picked til the 3rd round. Im rooting for the kid. He has loads of ability...but we havent seen it yet...Not being ready for Hartford is not a good sign.

No big deal. He is not ready and it is the smart move. Better this way vs not competing in the AHL.

He has the raw talent, but then got in to a bunch of personal issues that set him back. He can skate better than most NHLers.... MacDavid like skating, except he has the size advantage... he just needs to learn the game more.

I hope thats it...but as I said above...those 3 didnt need to learn the game more...they were the #1 overall picks who have shown their value....Perhaps the guy who evaluated him to give him exceptional status was wrong about Day....Day was terrible in the Summer showcase....didnt even get a pre season game with us

That decision to grant him exceptional status is made when he was 15 years old. You can't expect someone's evaluation of a 15 year old kid to pan out to an NHL job. Fact of the matter is he was picked in the 3rd round and we should judge him against his peers there, not a decision the OHL decided on 4 years ago.

I agree that with his talent, size and experience, he should be ready for Hartford. A 2016 third round pick who has played 4 years in the OHL should be ready. But that's no reason to declare him a bust, or to trade him. You won't get anything for him at this point. Nurture and develop him and hope for the best.

4 guys in the history of the sport got granted exceptional status...3 of them #1 overall picks who are studs...So Day should be right up there with them

Mikhail Sergachev has made the roster for TBL. (9th overall, 2016) So Day is the clear #1 defenseman in Windsor now. He'll get all the ice time he can handle, in all situations. It's his team now.

So what. Last year was the first year he got over what happened to his brother. It was his first year of turning it around. It's not like another year of junior will hurt him.

Calling a 3rd round pick a bust is ridiculous. Most never get a sniff of the NHL. Evegeny Grachev says hi.

He will be a bust if he don't make it because of the exceptional status he shares with MacDavid, Ekblad and Tavares

I'm not suprised or worried he's back in junior. But he has to be the guy his coach wants on the ice in all important situations, eating up the minutes. At the level he's at again it's put up time, either he becomes a dominant player in the league and is in the best league defenseman conversation, or he's probably going to be in a scrap to make Hartford next year. Last year was a significant step for him in terms of gaining some confidence, and I think he goes into this season in junior for the first time as a player confident in his ability to play in the league and hopefully that leads to a realization of how good he can be.
