General manager Jeff Gorton never expected Lias Andersson to be in Sweden and Tony DeAngelo to be in Hartford at this juncture of the season, thus leaving the Blueshirts with nothing to show on the NHL level as the return for Derek Stepan and Antti Raanta.

Management overestimated seventh-overall selection Andersson’s readiness to make the jump from Sweden to Broadway as a 19-year-old and expected more polish and whole-ice awareness from DeAngelo. The 22-year-old 2014 first-rounder has struggled with the Wolf Pack since his Oct. 24 demotion after failing to nail down the sixth spot on the New York blue line.

I don't think nurturing young players is in chewys repertoire. He stands back and watches them evolve on their own. If they don't goodbye.

Nope...chewy don’t like the kids....but the fact that if Gorton was expecting Lias and Heatl to be automatic regulars by opening night then he is a bad GM....then maybe he couldn’t see in TD what AZ did and Gorton got torched on that deal

I think the expectation Andersson and DeAngelo would be with New York was mostly media driven, during the slow news summer season. I don’t see a NHL GM looking at the post trade possibility of drafting a guy who would be on this seasons team as anything more than a hope. According to some reports the Rangers took the “more ready” Andersson over “possibly higher ceiling” later picks. That’s a big gamble of a trade if Andersson was the target for his supposed readiness, especially since they had no quarantee Anderson was going to be available.
DeAngelo is another issue, a reasonable expectation of him being in New York could have been made. He had appeared to have paid his AHL dues. 59 points in 94 games is pretty good offence which is his forte. Chewy has to accept some mistakes with young guys. But he seems to only let his boys make mistakes.

Regarding Anderson, you do realize there are 3 (count'em, Three) players from last year's draft still on NHL rosters (top 2 guys and 5th string goalie in Vegas, I believe). Andersson was a bit of a reach for sure but as someone else said, perhaps more media driven to have expected either he or Hityl to be here. I feel confident both will be successful pros - shame on idiot Brooks for trying to evaluate the trade this soon

You have a point...but Gorton said we are rebuilding on the fly...not looking to solidify our future....TD is still in the minors as he has nothing to show for this trade on the ice right now....And as far as Anderson...I hope he makes it...and he better be a top 6 forward for where he was picked....But when Bob Mackenzie said on TV when the Rangers were up "look for the Rangers to go outside the box" With all we know about the history of this team drafting busts....When I heard him say that I wanted to throw my TV into the street...Im not happy with Gorton at all....Because Sather is still around

Brooks does also say in the article that the main part of the trade was to dump Stepans 6.5 for the next 4 years

Yep and that was in of itself a big move...Inept Management gave Stepan that kind of contract....which definitely would of been headed for "buyout city" one day

Brooks already writing off Andersson is laughable. Brooks doesn't even know what the SweHL is. It's not going to be hard for Andersson to be better than Stepan. Stepan was a lazy, overpaid, inconsistent dumbass that never got better on draws. DeAngelo has been garbage. However, this deal was about Andersson and a salary dump. Not DeAngelo. Would have peferred Merkley and the 7th pick in hindsight. However, too early to write DeAngelo off. Still not sure why they don't move him to wing. I think the kid could be a real good NHL forward.

Yep TD on the wing would be worth looking at...Kid has great hands. The right move would been to leave Stepan exposed to be taken by Vegas...If they dont take him then trade him in a deal geared towards the future while still having Lindbergh

DeAngelo sucks, oh well...

Andersson is kicking ass in Sweden. He's going to be a NHLer.

So will Chytil....

Shestyorkin....

Buchnevich is blossoming. There are other prospects with lots of promise, too.

Just read an article on Ty Ronning that has me optimistic.
