They can't until their respective seasons are finished in Canadian Juniors

He’s a overage jr player. Putting up big numbers is not unusual for a overage player. His game is offence which means top two lines. Would be quite a story if he ever makes the NHL.

Unlike a lot of imbeciles on our team he actually shoots the puck and he's a righty shot. If they can teach him some defense, I think he can be a good player for us.

All correct, but I wouldn't sell him short on an NHL spot yet. On an ATO from Hartford last year he had 5 points in 12 games and looked very comfortable. He'll need to be a dominant AHL scorer in order to make the NHL as anything other than a fill-in callup but he's had success at every level so far, and from all accounts he has the two qualities that contribute most to NHL success - talent and work ethic.

Read an article that had some stats guy project NHL numbers based on other overagers who eventually made it to the NHL, which.... this kid has skills, I can see him making it....

Anyways, it claims in his prime he'll be a 40-50 point producer... that is, career high.... while mostly projecting as a 30 pts. guy.

Career 3rd liner, which.... for a 7th rounder is a pretty good return.

I'm not selling him short and am an admirer of his skills shown at the junior level. He is dominant. He is a legitimate prospect. If I was betting, I'd bet on him earning a opportunity with the Rangers during his entry contract. Then its up to him to produce. All players that advance to the AHL have had success where they are coming from or they wouldn't be moving up, he is no different.. Many overage jrs that racked up points and went nowhere is reason for some of my skepticism, odds of success are still long. He is a point producer, thats his game, any opportunity to move up to the NHL will be preceded by scoring points in the AHL, I'm not sure dominant is a necessity, just showing evidence he can produce and provide optimism he will produce if promoted. He won't be going up to kill penalties.

I would say based on his game, dominant at the AHL level is a necessity for him to be considered a prospect with a long-term NHL future. I'd call that top-3 in scoring PP60 on the Wolfpack. Less than that, and to your point - he becomes a dime-a-dozen player at the AHL level.

PK is interesting... I do not know if he's played much PK or used on the PK at the junior level (most likely not given his ability to score at that level) but given his skillset, speed, tenacity, smarts - PK could offer him an opportunity at bringing that utility to the NHL club, similar to the way Grabner was used in that role.

I swear I'm not being argumentative but I feel like we've swapped positions in this thread

Its a moot point on how many points we think he needs to score to move up. Anything along the lines of Chytil and Andersson at present and he should get his look. Its a lot about opportunity in New York as to when he gets his chance, and importantly with who. Under the chewy regime playing with McLeod and Desharnais wont help his cause. See Lettieri. When he does and he probably will, he is then going to have to score to stick. My position is a show me position still. He goes around and through WHL defensemen like they are standing still, and has can't teach hands. He's also doing it as a overage player against a lot of 16, 17, and 18 year old defensemen, and of course older ones. When he does it consistently in the AHL, well then the Rangers will know they have something. I also never discount Dad played in the NHL, and as much as it can be a curse for younger players, it can also have significant advantages for some. I assume his increased production and dominance has done wonders for his confidence and his own expectations, and he's going to have a excellent opportunity next season with the benefit of games in the AHL last season and this season under his belt. I think we can both agree he is a could go either way, til he does it guy.

just chiming in here a bit late. Seems like we've drafted these smallish, junior hockey point scorers before (from 2009-2011 there were Ryan Bourque, Christian Thomas and Michael St. Croix). None of them ever was up to the NHL for more than an expresso (never mind a cup of coffee). Think to expect anything more from Ronning is wishful thinking.

BTW - 2 of the 3 I mentioned were also sons of decent NHLers, so that doesn't guarantee anything from a genes standpoint

Getting to the AHL is a pretty big accomplishment for any hockey player. Playing junior hockey or College hockey, getting drafted is all beat the odds stuff. And of course being a son of doesn’t guarantee success at the highest level, but sons of do have some advantages and more important opportunities ahead of other kids. At some point in time they have to play, but the name is definitely a door opener.

Vancouver eliminated from the WHL playoffs. Ronning will play in Hartford's final three games. Andersson, Chytil, and Fogarty returned to Hartford.

I think Ronning has a good shot at the NHL. Might need a year at the AHL level to polish up his defense. However, this team lacks righty shots. Especially that are goal scorers. He has that skill set.
