No clear cut answer, but we have had Nash. You say who would be more respected in the room, okay let's say for argument sake the answer is Nash (which is no lock), I say so what. Has it done anything for us the past couple of seasons?

One hand I have a known here and have seen that. The other hand I have a more dynamic player who has not been here and I have not seen that. Give me the dynamic guy I have not seen here for years already. That tilts this towards Kovy. Plus he would be huge for our PP. And BIG PLUS he is a big R shot we have lacked for a VERY long time.

If I had not been there and done that with Nash I may feel differently, but I have been there and done that, and I have not been there and done that with Kovy, so give me Kovy.

Fair point, but it will be a very different team dynamic next year than last, and the needs will be different. Last year it was an older, veteran team with plenty of experience and voices in the room. It was a team looking to make a playoff push, hopefully deep into the playoffs and contend. Next year there will be more kids, much lower expectation on the playoffs, but that also means a greater emphasis on player development. We'll agree to disagree.

Looks like it's all fake news.

https://www.tsn.ca/kovalchuk-denies-rangers-rumours-1.1056027

Now that is out of the way, can we get serious about what players might be a fit

Yeah, because I totally expected Kovy to say yes I tampered with the Rangers and have a deal with them...LOL. No guarantee he will be a Ranger, but I think we are top of the list and firmly in the mix with a few other teams.

Agreed concust....

I do think we both say it isn't a clear cut one way or the other. I think we agree there also. You lean Nash and I lean unknown let's give it a try Kovy.

It will be an interesting time come late June/early July. Looking forward to it.

Mikey has a good point also, Nash has been further damaged in his short time in Boston. Will have to rethink if that's still a good idea.

I do think they need some type of veteran leadership on the roster. Otherwise Kreider and Zucc are the two most veteran forwards you have. On the backend there's Staal, and Shattenkirk. Of course Hank is going to be one of those veteran voices in the room, but I do feel like this is currently lacking, on a rebuilding team.

The Rangers had a leadership issue under Vigneault who left it to the players, including Shattenkirk who admitted he didn’t step up because his game didn’t give him the presence to say much, but he did observe nobody else was saying much. Not a suprise given McD’s demeanour. The right coach reduces the amount of player leadership that was needed by Vigneault, as the new coach will supply most of it. But he still needs players to hold others accountable and run the room. I understand Shattenkirk keeping his mouth shut, hopefully his game will warrant having more presence in the room next year. I think the key guy will be Kreider stepping up. Zucc I think will be sacrificed on draft day. But leadership is a concern, I don’t expect much out of Lundqvist considering his longevity and it being a problem this year. Where was his leadership last year.?

Honestly I think Lundqvist is the last to be criticized for lack of leadership. He was CONSTANTLY telling people where to be, and skating up and down the bench at TV timeouts either criticizing or coaching or both. He was hardly one of the quiet ones and easily one of the more visible on-ice leaders the last few years.

That's not to say people responded to him or what he had to say, but it certainly wasn't for lack of trying.

Shattenkirk who was in the room said nobody said much at all. Including Lundqvist. For every time he had something to say at the bench, he tied into teammates and stared them down much more after goals. He did that often displaying a lot of negative behaviour.

4/18/18 | Elliotte Friedman was on the NHL Network on Monday and said that the feeling around the NHL is that "unless something happens,"Ilya Kovalchuk's top choice would be to join the Rangers.

Friedman noted that reports out of Russia last week suggested Kovalchuk and the Rangers were discussing a 2-3 year deal worth around $6 million per season.

Friedman added, "at this point in time, nobody is saying anything, nobody is confirming that. The belief is, as always, is that he wants to be a Ranger, and the Rangers certainly have some interest. He can't officially be signed to a contract until July 1st, but people can talk to him. So we've got a bit of time here and there, but the word we've all gotten is, assume Rangers until there's reason not to assume Rangers."

Would be an abomination; walked away from a 17 year deal to play in Russia. Now the talk is that the NYR are thinking of signing this ingrate to a long term deal at his age? Typical MSG B.S. move if true!

A 5 minute deal at a nickel per is way overboard for this malcontent. Stay in Moscow.

Had there not been a lockout, Kovalchuk would've never left for Russia. It's not his fault the league didn't have it's crap together.

On top of that, he wanted to be a Ranger all along.... bjt The Devils offered him that ridiculous contract, and his agent signed it. To which The Devils were penalized..... so now he has to play in a league that was locked out AGAIN for a team that lost draft picks as penalty even the he wanted to play in NY.....

So he went to Russia during the lockout, was happy there, and so he cut ties with the b.s. to be the best player in his home's top league..... what a rebel....

He's going to come here, and be motivated to maximize his window to produce at an elite level. Playing in the biggest city, in the best league.

7. ILYA KOVALCHUK, RW, 35
2017-18 cap hit: $6,666,666

Showed absolutely zero signs of slowing down in the KHL, where he continued to light it up, and he’s a proven NHL talent, one of the best goal scorers of his generation. Teams will still likely take a prove-it approach given his age, though. Something like a two-year pact sounds likely.

For those few short months in 2014, St. Louis took this team by the balls and dragged it to the finals. I never saw a team as together. They all learned a lot from him.
