The team with questions to answer now is TB. They went all in & fell short, not even the finals. They are not like Vegas playing with bonus points, to Vegas this is all bonus, to Tampa it is falling way short.

That's what happens when you've lost your stuff... he played great the other two rounds, with almost zero mistakes... and again I can remember a day when G was as solid as they come... but TB took their chances on aging players, and it is what it is.

Girardi will always be one of my favorite Ranger players... if they had won the Cup, his number would be in the rafters.

This guy is overrating McDonagh and Miller.

They're good players.... not great.... yet he thinks we should've got their NHL ready top prospects, instead of dipping in to their "good not great" next tier? Doesn't make sense.

We got a fair deal, and depending on how these two pan out could end up the winners here.... see what becomes of Namestnikov... what if he helps us land Tkachuk?

Interesting note, McPhee has 2 teams in the finals, he was the GM of the Craps & many on this team were his doing. From a Rangers goon to a pretty darn good exec, good for him. Oh, the guy running the Craps now is also an x-Ranger.

You don't just turn bad overnight... it starts with one bad game, and then a string, and then you have an cold streak, and then it's an off year... and just keeps going downhill from there. I will say to his credit he played well through most of the playoffs, in part due to Cooper's pretty smart utilization. I think they were trying to stretch out their depth on defense and they put him with Hedman for the last game. We all know how that turned out.

I think he's failing to take into account the contract situations. Miller is an RFA and will get a good raise. McDonagh has one more year and then UFA, which means he'll get 6, 7+ million over a long term deal. The fact of the matter is that neither was particularly a good fit for a rebuilding team, or at least, are better utilized as assets.

A team that's in contention isn't really going to be willing to part with roster pieces in a trade like this or else they're not actually getting better.

There's a case that they may have gotten a better deal at the draft. I don't see it though, because at the draft you're building towards next year and you lose a lot of the sense of urgency.

Anyway I agree with much of the article but I'd give the Tampa deal a B.

I happen to appreciate Girardi for all his good years here and wish him well wherever he goes. That said, Girardi isn't to blame for Tampa being bumped from the Stanley Cup playoffs. The blame sits on the shoulders of the forwards. Shutout twice in a row! There's where the blame goes.

BTW, take a look at the rafters . Half the guys up there didn't win a Cup; so that should NOT be a criteria to keep Girardi's number from being retired.

Stats for 17 games played (Callahan only played 15):
Miller 2-6-8 (-4)
Stralman 1-4-5 (-3)
McDonagh 0-5-5 (+2)
Girardi 2-1-3 (+3)
Callahan 2-1-3 (+1)
Total: 7-17-24 (-1)

MEH. Bunch of losers. Good riddance.

think McD's play plateaued and fell rather quickly. I liked him as NYR but he has been declining even though his in prime years. Injury accumulation and getting the snot kicked out of him in AVs siege defensive strategy. His play for me was OK for Bolts nothing special at all. Girardi looked more on the ball.
Miller absolutely disappeared. Watching him disengaged, a-la Kessel, was disappointing. He is not Messier or the aged 99 looking to pick their spots. He is a talent for sure but skeptical on him becoming a consistent player.
Value obtained TBD. Those junior players seem to be value and not reaches. Top line D pairing nope but consistent bottom 4 yep. Howden a 1C nope but a solid two-way full effort 3C yep. Nemenstikov decent middle-six forward.
I say a fair hockey trade ..... see how it develops on the NYR side but Tampa already received their peak value.

That's the risk of trading established players for picks/prospects. People who want to trade all the established players for prospects/picks need to have a very good amount of patience, cause it will take time to see if it is indeed worth it.

That said, both will get long looks in camp, and should at least be call ups this year. They're both close

I have zero regret dealing McDonagh...zero. He has been heading down for a few years now, and will be a UFA next summer. And while I don't love giving up Miller, I do realize he was due a big raise this summer, and he is what he is. Playing with studs like Stamkos and Kuch he had 2 goals in the playoffs, after 1 in his whole Rangers playoff career. So while I am a big Miller fan I also realize he hasn't been anything that great so far.
