Report: NYR closing on Swedish F Lindqvist
TSN.ca Staff

According to Swedish news outlet Expressen, the New York Rangers are close to Swedish Hockey League star Michael Lindqvist to an entry-level contract.

Lindqvist, 23, is coming off a breakout season with Farjestad in which he scored 20 goals and posted 34 points in 33 games. He added two goals and one assist in two playoff games, but dealt with injuries throughout the year.

Lindqvist's agent, Joakim Persson, told Expressen that multiple NHL teams have expressed interest in the forward, and said a decision will be made in the near future.

Johan Svensson of Expressen reports the Washington Capitals have been among the teams in pursuit of the 5'11 forward.

The Rangers announced their intentions to rebuild with "young, competitive players that combine speed, skill and character" during the regular season and traded away veterans ahead of the trade deadline.

Why only small players that are "young, competitive players that combine speed, skill and character"? How about some players that clear the crease and defend their teammates who combine that with "young, competitive players that combine speed, skill and character" ?

No, we only go after Spike Dudley-type pacifists.

Really interesting signing, meaning almost certainly that someone.... or two... could be traded at the draft. If they're confident Lindqvist is NHL talent, this is a roster spot. Add in Kovalchuk (assuming that noise is true).... then the possiblity of winning a lottery spot and draftin a Svechnikov or Zadina who I think are ready to step in to the NHL.... that 3 new wingers that we'd need to make room for.

I think Kreider's chemistry with Zibanejad, and late season production... effectiveness in front on the PP.... saved him. He may be our next captain.

Namestnikov is all but a goner, I think, so his rights can be traded. Zuccarello is a candidate, but the fanboy in me wants him to be a lifer.... No one is safe, though

Probably because when you start looking at undrafted, unsigned free agents, you have to give something up, and size, being the least impactful for a scoring forward, should be the first thing you're willing to overlook.

He's 5'11"..... He's not that short. He's an inch taller than Ryan Callahan....
