Got this from a Cafe buddy.

Rangers have a new Head Coach:

Boston University bench boss David Quinn has apparently informed the athletic director at Boston University that he is taking the New York Rangers head-coaching job.
Quinn will reportedly sign a five-year deal worth $12 million. He'll be tasked with turning around a Rangers team that finished 24th in the NHL this season. However, the Rangers are expected to adopt a similar approach as the one the Philadelphia Flyers took with Dave Hakstol, giving Quinn time to implement his system and change the culture of the Rangers dressing room. A press conference could take place shortly after GM Jeff Gorton returns from the IIHF World Championships on Monday.

Hopefully the new Coach doesnt have player input for a while...AV had input early and got rid of Stralman and chose Fast over Hagelin

It is a good idea to hire a coach before the Draft & FA. A coach should have the option to build a team & players to his style. So, they do have to have a coach by that time. And, they did say (I hate this saying) they are thinking/looking outside the box, they were not looking @ recycled material, the ol' boys club.

I think next year will be a challenging year, the East is tough, it will be a tough year, a lot of new faces also. I would not be expecting too much.

"Quinn has a knack for assembling potent line combinations and then having faith in his players to keep them together."
No more blender tactics

"Quinn likes to employ and unleash offensive defensemen, even at the expense of some defense."
Shattenkirk just wet his undies

"Alain Vigneault’s coaching style would be considered relaxed...... Quinn, on the other hand, seems like the complete opposite of that style, as he is vocal and commands the room....."
A leader behind the bench? What an idea!

I would rather have Fred Flinstone than numb nuts, so the replacement coaching bar is not exactly requiring much to leap. But I like lots of what I’ve read about him. He checks a lot of boxes from what I see.

Well they said from the beginning that they wanted a coach who would have player development at the forefront of their skillset, and if/when this is confirmed this is the exact right type of candidate. I've said from the beginning that the coach needs to fit the team (and vice versa) to have any success. This is a large part of why AV's last year was so disastrous - ever since the Stepan trade it was clear that the direction of the club had changed, but AV is not a coach that changes(anything). He no longer shared the direction and vision of Gorton and the rest of the club and tried to fit a square peg into a round hole. AV is a good coach when you give him a talented, veteran team that can pretty much run itself. We all know he's not good at adapting to game situations, or using youngsters effectively, or keeping track of his defensemen.

So I like this Quinn hire, with the understanding that if and when this team matures into more of a contender, Quinn at that point may or may not be the guy anymore. But for the stage that the team is in now, I like this hire a lot.

Av says play whistle to whistle... isn't that the same as saying dumb and soft?

I would also say I hope not like the Bruins... They play (with the exceptions of 1 new year) Physically but historically stupid... like the Flyers.

According to the video on the link... Jim Montgomery from the University of Denver, was offered the job by the Rangers and turned it down even though it was a lot more money.... to coach Dallas which I find interesting. Quinn was not the first choice. Maybe Montgomery didn't want to step into the NY media market, doesn't like the management above or thinks Dallas has better chances and players... maybe personal reasons... why turn down more money?

Also add's a mini rivalry with Dallas, every time we play them now, we'll see what team is better coached.

No...but, as Andy referred to, certain teams have been historically known for their physical play -- notably the Bruins and Flyers. Then you have the teams whose game is speed and skill but have the ability to play physical when necessary. I don't think JG wants the Bruins type of team rather than the team that "can" play physical. To be honest, if this year's team throws hits half the time, that'll be a 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000% improvement over the AV times.
