NILS LUNDKVIST
5'11"
172 lbs
RHD

Born July 27, 2000 (17)

Last but certainly not least is Nils Lundkvist! After finally getting a chance to take a more in depth look at our 3rd first rounder.... I know this may come as a surprise, but the more I see the more I like. I know every time a defenseman with any kind of offense comes in to The Rangers organization, the name Brian Leetch is mentioned. While I'm not pegging this kid as a future HOFer, there's a lot of similarities.

Since he's only 17, I wouldn't be surprised if he grew that extra inch, and put on an extra 10-15 lbs to have the same build as Leetcher by the time he reaches the NHL.... but stylistically we're looking at a very active blueliner who can carry the puck himself with a nice set of wheels, and a motor that doesn't quit. He always seems to have his feet moving, getting to open areas of the ice. He's not afraid to shoot it, but he's good at setting up his teammates

I want to compare him to Boqvist, who was rated much higher than Nils. Boqvist clearly has the better offense, but he couldn't handle playing with the men when bumped up to the SHL..... which is probably why (here's my most interesting fact) it was Lundkvist that was named the top defenseman of the Swedish junior league..... not Boqvist, Lundkvist.....

It's because he is a more complete defenseman.... that is, he can actually play defense.... still, the kid has offense. Playing on the same team as Robin Kovacs in the SHL, he scored on pace or better than just about all of their team's other defensemen.... as a 17 year old rookie.... I'm officially impressed!

To make one last comparrison, I'll use the one Nils used in an interview: Kris Letang.

The Rangers could have a real diamond in the rough here. We certainly can't overlook this pick

Lots of one touch passes and one timers in that highlight package. Quick. Quick decisions and shifty skater

I love the play (even though it doesn't result in anything) where he stands the guy up in his own zone with an open ice hit, recovers, then takes the puck from his own blueline to try to set up a play from behind the O zone net.

Lots to keep an eye on

He's a prototypical do-everything-well, but do-nothing-outstanding swedish defenseman. The Swedes crank out these guys like an ikea factory. You rarely if ever see a swedish defenseman who's all offense and no defense, or vice versa. They all seem to be very good or at least competent in all aspects of the game.

Maybe similar to Stralman. He was all around where he doesn't do anything outstanding, but is solid in all areas.

As long as he isn't dumb like most of our defenseman have been the past 2 years. It would also be nice if our coach implemented a real system that didn't allow forwards to stand wide open in front of Hank every other minute of a game.
