It may feel like summer, but the Prospect Tournament, and then Rangers Training Camp are just around the corner.

In case you're wondering:

September 7th NYR v DAL
September 8th NYR v MIN
September 10th NYR v DET
September 11th Playoffs

That would make September 14th likely the day that players report to camp, with camp under way the following day on the 15th

Not a fan of Chytil at wing. If those lines happen to be reality.

That's not even the official roster, let alone the line combinations. It's a month out. Don't expect line combinations until the day of, or a day before, the first game.

Ronning and Andersson played together at camp, too.

It's more likely that the blogger loosely based his Traverse City "projected lines" on the actual lines from Prospect development camp.

I look at that line up and see about 5 of them that are probably for opening night... which you have to feel pretty good about. That is if they play like we have all seeen and hope they build on.

Not sure why you think this? He's a 2016 pick, a third rounder no less, and is a defenseman, a position which typically matures later.

Aside from the top half of the draft that year, there has only been one defenseman drafted ahead of Day who has any NHL experience at all. (Sam Girard at 47)

TBH most of them are probably not going to work out but it's a little premature to write off a defenseman you drafted just over 2 years ago.

Day had good season, and excellent playoffs. He'll have his 1st season with The Pack this year.... he's 20 years old. It's make or break as far he needs to keep up with his peers.

Hajek and Lindgren are also 20 years old, and are expected to be bubble NHLers with a chance to make the team. Day needs to be in that conversation as well. It's ok for the other two to leap frog him in the depth chart.... but he needs to continue to show improvement

I think it's important to evaluate him for what he is, rather than fall into the trap of comparing him to what the expectations were for him, 5 years ago. Like rob mentioned, Hajek and Howden were from the same draft year and were both top 40 picks, so the expectations should actually be higher from them.

Day is again, cursed by unrealistic expectations. He's a 20 year old, third round pick who's about to start his first year in the AHL. He's probably behind Hajek development-wise, but a 20 year old defenseman playing in the AHL is pretty much what you would expect, especially out of a third round pick.

It's actually better for everyone if we all just forget what his name is and evaluate based on how he plays. If he plays like garbage in the AHL for two years, sure drag out the bust label. For now it's very premature. Having said that, the likelihood of Day being anything close to an elite defenseman is just about zero. He's not 15 anymore, expectations need to be re-calibrated to reality.

The reality is he still has a chance to be a special player. He had a really good finish to the season last year after being traded. He got more ice time and responsibility playing for Kingston, and took his game to a new level putting up 14 pts in 16 games in the playoffs

Confidence goes a long way.

I'm not writing him off, but I'm also not saddling him with unrealistic expectations. I still think he'll be an NHLer but seriously doubt he has a shot of being the next Karlsson. The good news is that in the two years since we drafted him, he hasn't fallen off expectations much for a third round pick, however, he hasn't exceeded them either. I am a big fan of his, hope he does well this year.

I don't know what he'll be. Make or break may have been a little too much, but it's definitely a big year for him. No question. Real interested in seeing him in preseason.

Haha I think he has that more than ever. It's more about Smarts.... I think.... I'm no Sean Day expert, but by the looks of it it's just a matter of experience.

If his hockey IQ can keep up with the pros, then he has all the tools to be a force out there. Otherwise, he's McIlrath.

It's unrealistic to compare him to the other 3 and where they were as 15 year olds. It is more realistic to compare him to them based on where they were drafted (#1 overall) to where he was drafted (3rd round) as 18yos. If Rangers drafted him in beginning of round 1 than everything you say would make sense. As it is, it doesn't

I am not comparing him to those guys...What I am saying is if he has the tools those same kids had to get the exception....then it is not unreasonable to expect he be in our lineup by now.....Its obvious he went off the rails and teams stayed away from him....Hopefully he puts it together

From what I've seen, it's his hockey IQ and his ability to make quick, correct decisions. For most guys that have the physical tools that can't crack the NHL, it's the speed of the decision making that makes the most difference. When he's playing against boys in juniors and makes a mistake, he can make up for it with his world class speed - make the same mistake against an NHLer, and you're toast. There's just no margin for error. In other words, he can still be a much better version of McIlrath, if he learns to play a simple defensive game. That of course can limit his offensive output too, which is why I said I think he's realistically a 4/5/6 defenseman in the NHL, if he makes it.
