I honestly don't know the answer to this. They still seem too soft, especially on defense. They'll be younger and faster but not necessarily tougher to play against. Thoughts?

Yep and resigning Cody McCleod was not the answer ....Matt Beleskey is our only hope for a guy to go in the corners and play physical

As a side note, I'm not sure why my account was deleted. If I did anything offensive at the end of the season it was not intentional and I certainly apologize. Anyway, I'm a "Prospect" again.

Depending on one guy to be the policeman is a time-honored and failed Rangers strategy. Belesky is better than nothing, but the makeup of the team needs to be tougher overall. Each line should have some bite to it, and the pairings on defense should have at least one Dman who makes guys keep their heads up.

Not seeing it with this group, but they haven't played a preseason game yet so I'll wait and see.

The Rangers will be tougher this season because their toughness level has no where to go, but up.

The Rangers will be tougher to play against this season because ........

...AV's gone.

And while I get that our team hasn't changed much, I believe every player has a bit more of a toughness in him than they were showing under AV's pussified reigns.

I think they'll be allowed to fight back this year, which was definitely frowned upon the last few years, but it's going to take more than one off-season to fix this team.

This is a very good point. And it doesn't pertain exclusively to toughness.
Unless Quinn can pull some crazy voodoo shyte, it will take at least this full coming season to kill the bad habits.

Yep...awful terrible Coach ...whistle to whistle...you can get punched but you cant punch back....AV got to stick around for way too long...forgetting whos on the bench in the playoffs...Holden and Staal out there with a 1 goal lead last minute...Holden on top pair...JT and Names 4th line and Fast top line....What were they watching up in the FO? should of been canned after losing to Ottawa where we had no business losing to them...Notice it seems his phone aint ringing?

I had a conversation with a friend while at a game one night and he said something that explained what was going on (especially with the defense)...he noticed that AV's "system" required the players to go against their natural "instincts" (i.e., go for the puck rather than the player, swarm the puck rather than covering your check and, of course, a players natural instinct to body check).

That being said, if such was the case, I think they'll be tougher to play against because it seems Quinn will allow them to "do what comes naturally"...that in itself is a huge step forward.

Some valid points quoted here. I had overlooked the "addition by subtraction" that AV's departure would create. Let's hope that this is readily apparent from the start.

I don't see them being much tougher to play against just with a coaching change.New coach is not gonna turn a team of lambs into a team of lions.I also didn't notice any urgency to draft any players whose main asset is physicality.Maybe Miller but that's it.The only way I see them being harder to play against is if Kreider goes back to playing the way he did his first few years here, and Belesky,Mcleod, and Brendan Smith all make the team and play with a decent amount of regularity.Hopefully the new coach can squeeze some physical play out of this group.

Different players have different instincts and develop a style of their own. Sergei Zubov never hit a fly but was a incredibly effective defenseman. Not all players have a instinct to hit, the same as some are passers some are shooters. It’s important a system is designed around best utilizing individual players talents and better parts of their game, all the while working on their team and individual weak points. Chewy had his single minded system and tried bending players games to fit it, instead of the more typical bend the system to fit the players. For example Marc Staal was never going to be a swift skating puck moving defenseman, but would have been a lot more effective, playing a stay at home defensemen in a system that actually supported the dmen in their own zone. It’s no secret he was pretty effective under Tortorella and slid badly under Vigneault who was to stupid to stop trying to push square pegs in a round hole.

Because AV was a stubborn moron who relied on the Hank in his prime to steal every game and never put in a solid, defensive system where it was hard to find open space where this coach will not do that.

.... because the idea is Quinn will play to players' strengths, maximizing their production through proper usage, and implimenting a more in your face system.

From what I understand he is a puck possession guy, and likes to envoke chaos in front of the opposition's net. Adversly, he focuses on winning the battles in front of Henk too, which was a real problem in the AV system.

So, just as Torts demanded his players to block shots, Quinn will demand his players to play harder down low and in front. If Hayes (for example) played for Torts, he'd block more shots even though he's not known for that..... So too (hopefully) he utilizes his size more under Quinn

I agree Rob but I don't think these players here now are built to play that way.I've never seen Hayes ever show any interest in physical play.As a matter of fact,he is always at the bottom of the league in hits.Hopefully the makeup of the team changes over the next few years.

Yeah,
Andersson
Chytil
Howden
Kravtsov
Ronning
Hajek
Miller
Lundkvist

And a good selection of other prospects in the system hopefully willing and able to pan out in to NHLers.

They won't be tougher to play against. It's a rebuilding team and I expect it will take a year or two to start finding their identity, especially in this regard.

However I will say that having a number of young guys on the roster will allow them to grow together and bond together, and that will help increase team toughness down the road (assuming Quinn allows it). This was one of the reasons for the success of the "black and blueshirts" of the Tortorella era, a number of younger guys all going through the same thing for years, finding other players of like mindset. I can only imagine what that team would have been like if Torts had actually taken the leash off a bit, he was notorious for his "no retaliation penalties" rule that hamstrung those teams.

In terms of total Hits, the Rangers were the #1 hitting team in the Tortorella era. The last three years of AV, they went from 7th, to 15th, to 20th.

The combo of the leftover Torts methods and the AV run and gun was a good combo for the Rangers.
