THE MATCHUP

The Rangers play their fourth game of the 2018-19 season and begin a three-game homestand Thursday, Oct. 11, against the San Jose Sharks at Madison Square Garden (7:00 p.m. ET - TV: MSG Network, Radio: ESPN 98.7 FM). The Blueshirts will face a Western Conference opponent during each game of their three-game homestand (San Jose, Edmonton, and Colorado). Beginning with Thursday's contest, five of the Rangers' next six games will take place at MSG.

NUMBERS GAME

The Rangers have averaged 34.7 shots on goal in their three games, the seventh-highest average in the league entering Wednesday's games. San Jose is second with 37.25 shots per game.

The Rangers are 25-10-3-1 all-time against the Sharks, including a split of their two games last season.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Buchnevich has scored in two of the Rangers' three games this season, and it will be interesting to see how the lefty shot fares playing his natural side.

The Sharks' top power-play unit features three Norris Trophies at the points in Karlsson (2012 and 2015) and Brent Burns (2017), both of whom are righty shots.

The Rangers have registered 104 shots on goal through the first three games of the 2018-19 season (34.7 shots on goal per game). In addition, nine different Blueshirts have recorded six or more shots on goal through the first three games of the season.

LEADING THE WAY

The Rangers have five alternate captains for the 2018-19 season - Jesper Fast, Chris Kreider, Marc Staal, Mika Zibanejad, and Mats Zuccarello. Staal is in his ninth season as an alternate captain with the Rangers, as he was first named an alternate captain at the start of the 2010-11 season. Among players on the current roster, Staal is the longest-tenured member of the team's leadership group. Zuccarello is in his second season as an alternate captain with the Rangers after first being named an alternate captain on Oct. 4, 2017, while Fast, Kreider, and Zibanejad all wore an 'A' during the second half of the 2017-18 season.

KING HENRIK

Henrik Lundqvist has stopped 56 of 60 shots he has faced in two appearances in 2018-19 (.933 SV%), as well as 47 of 49 shots he has faced at even strength (.959 SV% at even strength). Lundqvist is one of three goaltenders in NHL history who have posted a .920 SV% or better in eight different seasons since the league began to track saves and SV% in 1955-56 (along with Dominik Hasek and Roberto Luongo). He is the only goaltender in NHL history who has earned 20 or more wins in 13 consecutive seasons.

REMEMBERING 1993-94

Brian Leetch tallied four assists in the game (three of which were on the power play), while Mark Messier (one goal, one assist) and Sergei Zubov (two assists) both posted a multi-point game.

RANGERS VS. SHARKS - 1993-94

The Rangers posted a 1-0-1 record in two games against San Jose and outscored the Sharks, 11-6, in the two contests. The Rangers scored a season-high eight goals in their only visit to San Jose during the 1993-94 season, which was an 8-3 win on January 25, 1994. Steve Larmer (two goals, two assists) and Sergei Zubov (four assists) each tallied four points in the contest, while Mark Messier (two goals, one assist) and Brian Leetch (three assists) each notched three points in the game.
