Tampa is soft. Like last year, not built for the playoffs. Our pick will be a second rounder from them. Lemieux added the energy as expected. Hopefully, Kravtsov, Lundkvist and a couple of other d man can make the team next year and continue the upward trend. For a rebuilding team they don't suck that bad.

I am all in for lose-for-hughes or crapo-for-kakko but a lot to be said for the culture that is starting to emerge. They're showing fight and not backing down. for the most part hard on the puck and becoming that pain-in-the-ass team to play against.
Claude's spawn looked OK . Probably was a bit overly aggressive trying too hard to prove his worth and will settle in. He was all over the ice and as he settles down can do less running around becoming much more effective. He was good but sometimes a little less is much more ....
Tony D. 26min ! .... has his development just jump a few rungs ? needs some work when attacking down low seems to toss puck on net, good, but he skates past net and is automatically out of the play. like to see a quicker release at the circles and curl to the slot on his retreat instead of ragging it , soft toss and find himself behind the goal with his pecker in his hand.
It looks and feels pretty good!

But defenseman Libor Hajek, Tampa Bay’s 2016 second-rounder chosen at 37th overall, was the player the Rangers targeted. He is the player they had to have in the deal. He is also the player that then-GM Steve Yzerman would not trade unless Miller, who scored a power-play goal in the first period Wednesday, was included the offer.

The Rangers believed Hajek would contend for a blue-line spot this year and so did his junior coach, John Paddock. Instead, Hajek has struggled through an extremely difficult first pro season with the AHL Wolf Pack. Clearly, this is not what the Blueshirts need(ed).

So we wait. We wait to monitor Howden’s progress. We wait on Lundkvist. We wait to see whether the Rangers can get another first-rounder out of the trade. Most of all, we wait on Hajek. Because if Hajek does not become the big-time defenseman the Rangers believed, it will not be that Tampa Bay won the Trade of ’18, but that the Rangers lost it.

From Brooks article today

I've said before that Hajek has not looked comfortable in Hartford. Has never found real consistency, at least the level you expect when you trade for a young player that's one of the centerpieces of that deal. I had hoped he'd come in and basically be one of Hartford's top defensemen. He hasn't been that and has bounced around the lineup a bit. His consistency is what's lacking, not his skill, and not even his effort.

He doesn't "suck" as dump will accuse me of saying, but he's just not as far along as any of us would like at this point. I'm a little surprised by the callup, but I believe what you should expect to see when he does play, is a young defenseman that's going to struggle at first to adapt to the NHL pace. I'm not saying he shouldn't be called up or that he isn't up to the task, he's probably NHL-replacement level defenseman right now. If you go purely by how they've been playing , there are a couple of other guys who should be called up first, but that isn't the only criteria that management uses when they recall players. So maybe he'll be up for a few games, get a taste of The Show, and that will help him if he gets sent back down. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong and he'll impress while he's up here. Hope he does well.

I don't penalize anybody for struggling in Hartford...that team is a disaster and house needs to be cleaned big time

I think the Rangers need to invest a bit more into coaching and front office. AHL is always going to be a feeder league and there's a ton of roster turnover every year, and even within the year. So to deal with that you need some stability and leadership. Either they don't have the right people or those people aren't doing a good enough job providing this.

Hartford also currently has enough depth on D to cover this move, as Day has settled down into a more consistent defender and with the recent additions of Raddysh and Bergman. Like I said though if you were going by play alone, they should have called up either Gilmour or Lindgren but Hajek has put in his time also and maybe giving the kid a preview of the NHL will help him out.

BTW since you guys like AHL +/- so much, Hajek is a -26.

My only guess is that they have already decided he's not going to be an NHLer so they want to give Hajek a shot.

I have no problem with Brendan Smith out there right now either...he is a better Forward than Fast...maybe Smith can be dealt over the Summer...same with Shattenkirk. Staal needs to be the 7th D man next year....Play a rotating night off thing with Staal Smith Shatt Pionk Cleasson

Smith looks better as a forward than defenseman. He has the skating, check and get to the net. I would run him out on the fourth line but would also like to see Fontaine \ Fogarty. Would only send out on D in an absolute emergency.

This is my only problem with Smith on wing, it's ice time during garbage season that could be used to get a kid more experience. Smith playing wing is not going to benefit the organization long term but some exposure to NHL action for a kid, may make a huge difference.

Or, Quinn is doing this just to piss off Chytil.

I really don't understand why the Islanders are making such a big deal about this. Do they not understand free agency? He didn't sign an extension for over a year, for a reason. Writing was on the wall for months. Then less than a month before free agency they fired the GM (who sucked but) he had a good relationship with. They basically turned a "maybe" into a "no" at that point. If they had any brains at all they would have traded him at the deadline like 30 other teams in the league. I think they looked at what happened with Stamkos the year before and thought they were somehow comparable but didn't realize that they are in fact, the Islanders.

It's incredible how their continued ineptitude only begets more ineptitude. They got what they deserved by making a terrible gamble and it burned them. F*ck the Islanders, forever.

Yeah but that's kind of BS... he didn't sign an extension. Take a hint. If he doesn't sign an extension and you fail to trade your asset at the deadline, it's on you (Snow). Athletes are all supposed to say how much they like their team and how they'd like to stay. The subtext though is always "under the right circumstances and for enough money." How do you not know that when you run a hockey team. Then management further f's it up by firing Snow before free agency. How dumb is that?? That's the guy Tavares and his agent have been negotiating with the whole time. They will always be a second class franchise.
