CAPITALS (37-21-7) at RANGERS (27-27-10)

12:30 p.m. ET; NBC, TVAS

The Game

The Washington Capitals seek their fourth straight win when they visit the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.

The Capitals, 5-1-0 in their past six games and 9-3-1 in their past 13, are tied in points (81) with the New York Islanders for first place in the Metropolitan Division.

The Rangers, who have lost three straight (0-1-2) and are 5-6-3 in their past 14 games, are 13 points behind the Montreal Canadiens for the second wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference.

Washington is 3-0-0 against New York this season, winning the three games by a total of four goals.

Players to watch

Vlad Namestnikov has a four-game point streak (two goals, two assists), including his ninth goal of the season on one of his career-high seven shots against Montreal on Friday. The goal was his fifth in eight games. He has eight points (five goals, three assists) in his past eight games.

Tom Wilson has three goals and five points over his last five games, including a power-play tally to go along with four penalty minutes (roughing, unsportsmanlike conduct) from a third-period scrum against the Rangers last Sunday. Wilson has just three goals in 21 career games against the Rangers, but two of them have come in two games this season.

Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin has 11 points (seven goals, four assists) in an eight-game point streak and is three points shy of 1,200 in the NHL.

They said it

"We know in the playoffs, everything gets faster and tougher and more physical and that's what we are trying to focus on these last couple of games to bring that kind of game before the playoffs." -- Capitals forward Jakub Vrana

"That's all you can ask for in a hockey team, especially when it's had an adversity-filled season, and it's really good to see there is a lot of resilience in this group and that's going to pay off in the next few years for this group." -- Rangers forward Brendan Lemieux on New York's ability to come back in games

Capitals projected lineup

Status report

The Capitals and Rangers each were off on Saturday.

Stat pack

Brendan Smith is expected to play in his 400th NHL game on Sunday.

Zibanejad has five points (one goal, four assists) in his past four games and is two points shy of 300 in the NHL.

There have been 11 lead changes in the three games this season between the Rangers and Capitals.

Washington's opponents have scored first in each of its last four games, including the Rangers one week ago. The Caps have come back to win three of them.

The Caps are 23-10-4 against the Eastern Conference this season. Of their 17 remaining games, 15 are in the East.

Oshie has five points (three goals, two assists) in a three-game point streak.

Washington plays six of its next eight on the road.

That lineups fuked Howden is supposed to play. Interesting to project Howden back in a better version of Chytil and a quaranteed Kratsov next year, non of who are suited for fourth line status, besides that the fourth line is best it's been all year right now, and the Rangers will be making tough choices next year.

I hope the Rangers build for another year before they go rushing down free agent road. Although everyone talks Panarin who I'm not sold on and hope they stay away from, I agree Karlsson is the apple of their eye. Rangers being Rangers when it comes to big name UFA's they will sign him. And on that note the next CBA needs to take away this tax free advantage some teams have.

I don't disagree but you have to know this year or next year will be money being spent. i'd rather next year and another year of adding a few in house pieces then get specific players to fill holes. plus we can dream but by then hopefully Shattenkirk and Staals money is gone.

I think it's dumb no other word for it after the physical last game. Quinn takes three of his grittier players out of the lineup.

Strome continuing to show top draft pick skills. It's beginning to look like Gorton stole one here.

Zibanejad is not the corner stone of this organization.
Just too many concussions but nevertheless a great skill.
I remember when he has entered playing for Senators.
Healthy guy went hard after the puck those boards are a tough one to ply against.

Not sure why those two do not play .
Perhaps they were banged up and need body rest to avoid injuries.
