NYR closing in on signing 20-year-old UFA RW Jake Elmer of the @WHLHurricanes. Elmer has 38 goals and 78 points in 66 GP, playing on a line with 2019 high-end draft prospect Dylan Cozens. Elmer is that rare breed in hockey — a Dec. 31st (1998) birthdate.

In other words, Elmer is as young a junior hockey free agent as you can get. Had he been born a day later, Jan. 1, 1999, he would have been draft eligible this year. He’s eligible to sign a three-year entry-level NHL contract.

Good scorer at junior level. Good hockey IQ, well rounded. Good work ethic. There are concerns that his production is a result of Cozens, but if you can pick up a 20 year old UFA scorer it's worth the risk.

Also if we happen to take Cozens there's a chemistry thing there. In itself, not worth the signing but I think this is a good signing regardless. Free asset.

Not sure if this is just a jab at Gropp or you're serious, so I'll just say that he's playing on the top line in Hartford and not having a great season. Spent some time in the ECHL before being returned to Hartford, he's had some success recently playing with Lettieri but much of that is because Lettieri drives that line.

Unless he has a monster season next year he'll just play out the year and he'll be gone.

Interesting signing which might lead to a Dylan Cozens drafting in the first round from the same Hurricanes and line.

Elmer is a pretty average overage junior. He's a long shot at best. He never found a home til two years ago in Kootenay then Lethbridge last year flanking guess who Dylan Cozens. The unemployment line is full of guys who never did much til they hooked up with a elite talent like Cozens. He's only put up numbers in this his final Jr season, suggesting he is a good scorer is a stretch. The Rangers already have one in Hartford, Ryan Gropp who feasted on playing with Mathew Barzal. Elmer's career junior numbers pale in comparison to Gropp's I think its more a indicator of the Ranger scouts watching Cozens so much that they saw a connection with Cozens who checks a lot of boxes for the Rangers, and is their next possible shot at a scoring franchise type center. Sorta like Casey Middlestadt.

Pretty much the Rangers can afford a shot in the dark with contracts.

A little bit of both and thanks for the update on Gropp.
