Starting a new thread for this

From Sara Civ on the Athletic,

• Most scouts and NCAA sources I’ve spoken with generally believe Fox projects as a second-pairing offensive defenseman. His 1.41 PPG average, highlights and prowess on the power play speak for themselves. “Puck-moving defenseman” is a tired term at this point, but the way Fox navigates through the neutral zone and his instincts with the puck are my personal favorite aspects of his game. With all the hype, though, there are serious concerns about his skating, and there are legitimate questions about the level of competition the ECAC (the conference Harvard plays in) provides. He’s never outright said on the record that he wouldn’t want to do his time in the AHL, but if that implication is sound, that’s a red flag.
“Duncan Keith played two seasons in the AHL and said it was the best thing that ever happened to his career,” one NCAA source pointed out. “(Fox) has played five games since March 1, and he doesn’t need AHL experience?”
• Fox never openly refused to play in the AHL, to be clear, but by all accounts (including his own), he wants to take a path that would get him on an NHL roster the quickest. There are teams (like the Rangers) with far more depleted blue lines than the Hurricanes, and since the ball is in Fox’s court, he is free to pursue them. The Hurricanes can afford to let their defensive prospects marinate.

Agree - pass on him he could be another Matt Gilroy if his skating is an issue, cause Gilroy's was at the NHL level.

We have enough d-men in the pipeline. No need to spend on so much speculation

Scouting Report
A terrific playmaker from the back end with first-class vision and elite puck distributing abilities, Fox was Team USA’s most consistent defender. He is yet another Nassau County native to grace the NTDP’s blue line, using flair, creativity and astonishing puck control to wow onlookers and dizzy opponents all at the same time. He was beyond deserving of his nomination as top defenseman at the U18 worlds, which shows how far this kid has come since the start of the season when he was considered (and assessed) as merely a power play specialist. Nothing could be further from the truth, as Fox usurped fellow NTDP rearguard Chad Krys as Team USA’s best overall defenseman and most reliable at generating offense.

Fox is a good skater who looks far more graceful in confined spaces than he does in open ice. His lateral movement and edge work are excellent — his twirls and pirouettes are strikingly similar to the way Ottawa star defender Erik Karlsson controlled his puck movement while playing for Team Sweden in his pre-draft years. Fox has an accurate shot that does not require velocity to beat a goalie clean in any of the corners, and he can juke and fake his way into prime scoring areas with relative ease. He is far from physical, and falling below the six-foot mark could work against him as his development path takes him through the bigger, thicker forwards. That being said, he ran the gauntlet of NCAA competition with significant success, as even the most mature NCAA opponents could not find an answer to his puck wizardry.

As far as the next Matt Gilroy comments go...

Gilroy
05-06 Boston Univ. NCAA 36gp 2g 6a 8pts
06-07 Boston Univ. NCAA 39gp 9g 17a 26pts
07-08 Boston Univ. “A” NCAA 40gp 6g 15a 21pts
08-09 Boston Univ. “C” NCAA 45gp 8g 29a 37pts

Fox
16-17 Harvard Univ. NCAA 35gp 6g 34a 40pts
17-18 Harvard Univ. NCAA 29gp 6g 22a 28pts
18-19 Harvard Univ. NCAA 33gp 9g 39a 48pts

Gilroy was never a point per game player.... Fox has been consistently one of the best offensive producers in the NCAA since his Freshman year... actually he was the best point producing D his Freshman year... this year he was the best out of any skater... including Makar and Hughes

They would be stupid not to take a flyer on such a player if he is available as a UFA after next season. They have nothing to lose even if he ends up in Hartford. However someone will probably pony up and trade to try to get him signed for next season, I suspect the Rangers will be in on it. They would obviously rather go the UFA route next summer if he's available, but if they like him and Carolina is moving him they will have to make a decision. You can never have to many good players in your system.

Put it this way... if he were to enter the draft in June he'd be a sure fire first round pick.

So if you can trade a second or a third in order to get Fox, you've gotten value. If you trade a first rounder to get him, maybe that's a push because on one hand, he's older, but on the other hand, he's about NHL ready. You can't say that for the vast majority of first round picks.

Unless forced to move sooner which I don't see them doing, they will obviously wait to see where the dust settles on the Tampa, Dallas picks. assuming the Dallas pick remains a 2nd I wouldn't have a problem flipping that for Fox. Its a given he's worth a flyer for a third round pick.

DeAngelo, Pionk and Fox are all, smaller, right handed defenseman. Obviously, one has to go which would be Pionk unless he rockets his play up. Either way, Fox won't cost nothing but money to sign. Hopefully, Pionk has a big season next year and cleans up his game to up his trade value a lot. Long term, I just don't see him here. Shattenkirk sucks moose dong. He has to go.

He's not a UFA yet but at this point he's pretty much holding all the cards. I would assume that he could simply inform Carolina where he'd like to go, and Carolina would only negotiate with those teams, and at some point Carolina will need to grant the other team permission to talk to Fox's agent (trading team obviously wants assurances he'll sign with them if they're trading assets). From the Rangers perspective, they have nothing to lose, they only have a "soft" deadline of wanting to get something done before Fox has to actually go back to school. And it would be to their advantage to strike while the iron's hot. My guess is something gets decided before July 1.

If he informs Carolina he only wants to go to the Rangers I'd say the Rangers hold a very strong hand, and its up to Gorton to play it well. It will just take a while for Carolina to realize no first and likely a low second. Tampa's if they don't win the cup.

He doesn't have a trade clause.... it's not up to him to say where he wants to go. Carolina can and should trade him to the highest bidder.

From what I've seen and read of him, The Rangers should be in on that, as his stock will only rise from here out.

His skating is no longer a question mark... it was his draft year, but he's a good skater. He's good at everything aside from being a physical force. No one is going to be scared of an Adam Fox open ice hit....

But he's better than any RD in the system or at least equal to Nils Lundqvist who I know little about other than praise from Rangers management, and it won't be easy trying to draft a better RD from this year's crop.

So, unless we're banking on Tony D and Pionk to round out their game, I'd go for this guy pretty heavily.

It is up to Fox, because if he doesn't like where he's traded to, he can just say "going back to school" and then in 2020, he'll be a UFA.

So if Edmonton trades a second round pick for him now, and Fox decides he doesn't want to play in Edmonton, he just goes back to Harvard for a year, and then in summer 2020 he can just sign wherever he wants, and Edmonton loses that pick and has nothing to show for it. So a team isn't going to trade for him unless they're assured he would sign there.

Only a fool would trade for a player who doesn't want to play there. Especially since UFA status is only a year away.

Condition is games played, per McKenzie:

The Carolina Hurricanes have traded prospect Adam Fox to the New York Rangers for a second-round pick this year and a conditional third-round pick in 2020.

TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reports the conditional third-round pick will become a second-rounder om 2020 if Fox plays in 30 games next season. He adds that the Rangers are in the process of finalizing an entry-level contract with Fox.

To clarify the conditions, we sent a third round pick (2020) to Carolina. If Fox plays 30+ games for us next year (he should), that third round pick gets upgraded to a second round pick (2020).

So essentially it will be Fox for two seconds, which is worse than a second and a third, but it's still a steal.

Trouba is not coming here you retard. Stop bringing it up. Lou is a senile, incompetent, dumb fukkkk compared to Gorton at this point. Gorton is building a future powerhouse for a decade here. This team is stacked at goal, defense and forward for the future. In a rebuilding year this team lost a ton of close games. I give it one more year then this team should start clicking in at 100 points a year, every year.

Fox is a good pickup. Hopefully scouts have seen enough to justify the two picks going back. If you look at it from the angle he would have taken a second round pick to draft then he's really only costing the third pick but hopefully he gets 30 games under his belt this year and it becomes a second. Either way it's on him to justify the trade. You look at Lindgren, Hajek, and now Fox as starters next year and Gorton has some dead wood to dump. One almost has to believe Shattenkirk, Claussen and possibly Pionk might be on the move. I like the pickup but will refrain hanging great on him til he gets here and makes the team and a impact.

seems like a good move. Kind of like moving up in the draft using current position and a next draft conditional to grab an NHL-ready prospect. This prospect has a better proven body of work outside of the NHL. Also projected to be a top 4 or maybe top pairing defensemen. Not bad?
This draft looks to produce 2 NHL ready prospects and still have a 1st round and 2nd or maybe if very lucky 2 1st and 2nd along with the remaining picks. Moving along nicely in my opinion.

All I know is that Neal Pionk came in out of college, and was able to turn some heads. Was one our best defenseman for a while before he plateaued, but is still an NHL caliber player nonetheless..... Adam Fox is better than Neal Pionk.

We can basically look at it as having drafted Fox. Regardless where the Dallas pick ends up we will still be getting 5 players in the first 2 rounds. So I am not worried about the payment. Going to be a VERY interesting Summer. Elliote Friedman said in his 31 thoughts that a NHL exec said watch the Rangers to be very active...including offer sheets.

On D now
Skjei TD
Staal Shattypants
Smith Pionk

Coming
Hajek Fox
Lindgren Keane
Crawley Nils
Rykov
KAM
Gross
Ragnarsson

I would say Cleasson is gone and some magic has to be done with Staal Smith Shattypants and Pionk
