If this doesnt get you excited. Thats Ryan Suter getting the runaround. Can't go wrong with either guy but my preference is Kakko.

Yeah he does not look at all out of place playing against NHL competition. Hughes on the other hand, I think he's a more dynamic player overall but will take a little more seasoning to understand how best to use his talents vs NHL-level competition.

It helped that 27 set 2 separate picks for Kakko on that one play. Good to see the high quality reffing is common everywhere.

I watched the game live. Was the moment we were all waiting for.... 3 on 3 and both Kakko and Hughes were put out at the same time.

Kakko owned the puck. It felt like he was going to end it, and almost did

I like Kakko. He will dominate puck battles. Pick or no pick. He has all the other ingredients. Hughes has upside but is he going to withstand the crunching coming his way.

The comparisons to Kane and Johnny Hockey are real.... just because he's small doesn't mean he can't/won't dominate games.

Make no mistake about it, both players will be excellent NHLers. Jack Hughes will just take a little more time to get adjusted is all.

Read it again Rob . Hughes won't dominate games physically. Kakko will and plus Kakko has all of Hughes abilities. And Hughes is not Gaudreau or Kane ..... Yet. Might be but has it to do just like the bigger Kakko. Hughes will get knocked around and hes got that hurdle. Gaudreau played against men in College Kane major junior and both were better positioned to start a NHL career. Hughes has got some maturing to do. Jersey will decide if they want another top line center or the winger Rangers get what's left in a good situation not having to choose. It could be a career defining moment for Shero.n

Kane only played 1 year of Major Junior - before that he was with USNDP, same as Hughes played for. And NDP was much less then than it is now. Team Hughes played on - their schedule is 80% NCAA so comparison to Gaudreau is valid. My guess is that barring injury we'll see Hughes with 70ish points as a rookie and vying for Calder Trophy, whether with Rangers or Devils

Hughes is a much more dynamic player than Kakko in open ice. It's not even a question. Kakko is much better down low and in traffic. He's bigger and protects the puck much much better.

Given a little space, Hughes is a superior player. Given little to no space, Kakko is a superior player.

I don't think Hughes is a Kane level player. He could develop into a Gaudreau level player though. Eichel is another good comparison. I don't think he'll be a 100 point player, but he could easily be an 80 point guy.

I think Kakko is much further along in physical development and will be better at the start. Hughes will be amazing though soon, and fo a long time. Either one is a great pick.

One year of Major Junior schedule, travel and competition is a huge step up from USNDP.

Read some more rumblings that Kakko is in play for # 1. It is no longer a slam dunk the Devs take Hughes # 1. I still think it is likely, and I think we'll be great either way, but at this point it is absolutely possible the Devs will take Kakko over Hughes.

That's for sure, right now no way of predicting who goes 1st. This is not a McDavid situation.

Hughes.... if compared to other recent USA talent.... seems to be somewhere between Auston Matthews and Jack Eichel. Universally believed to be a better prospect than Jack Eichel was his draft year.

He will be an offensive force to be reckoned with.... maybe not his rookie year, but in his prime he will be as good or better than just about any US born player you can name... other than Kane...

That said, Kakko is said to be as good as any Finn... other than Selanne....

So no, not generational.... but both have super star potential.

This is about as close as the choice between Hischer/Patrick... last time The Debs chose 1st overall... though I believe both Hughes and Kakko are better than those two.

So either way it'll be hard to be disappointed.... but I've wanted Kakko since the WJC!!! REALLY hope that's who we end up with

The bright side... or a bright side.... to Hughes falling to us is he's already putting in reps with Kreider, Skjei, and Fox in this WC... US playing Germany (Moritz Seider... my favorite for NYRs second 1st rounder) now. 3rd period, tied 1-1

I agree, I have very little doubt these guys are both better than Hischer and Patrick. Either of these guys would be clear # 1's in that draft. Both of those guys are nice players, these two guys have superstar potential. Maybe not generational like McDavid, those guys come around rarely, but the next level down I believe.

I do expect Hughes to be better than Eichel as well, which is darn good considering Eichel went for 28 goals and 82 points in 77 games this season. I think the hype and expectation for Hughes is higher than it was for Eichel.

Yeah, but Eichel is still better than anything we have.... Hughes will almost certainly be better than Jack Eichel, though.

The downside is that he won't be so right away... If that matters to The Devils, then he will fall to us at #2.... I don't think that the fact that this 18 year old kid isn't dominating at the WC yet is enough to deter the NJD from drafting Hughes at #.... given the hype, and things like that he skates with Hall in the Summer.... Hynes is currently coaching Hughes at this WC....

All signs point to NJD taking Hughes at #1

All except that Kakko is the better more effective player NOW.... at least in these international tournaments for their respective teams....

.... I want Kakko hahaha

1/2"way through the second period USA and Germany and it's a 1-1 tie. Thats not a misprint a 1-1 tie. Jack Hughes has barely touched the puck and has done nothing. Ray Shero has a connection with Hughes father. I hope it's very strong.
I will not be at all suprised to see Kakko the defacto number 1 after this tournament. Kakko has been well up in the top section of best players in the tourney, Hughes is still trying to prove he even belongs here with no basis of evidence suggesting he will ever be better than Kakko. The NHL draft is littered with can't miss kids that did. Not saying he will crash, but no way can you say he won't. Kakko is a guaranteed plug him in on your top line for the next ten years. Shero is not a idiot, the Rangers will be taking the boys jersey up to the draft podium.

As long as the Rangers do not go off the board with some other person... if NJD takes Hughes ..the Rangers get a game ready player who could be great... or if they take Kakko the Rangers get a kid with huge upside .. either way they win from being the 6th to 2nd pick... THIS is what the Rangers have been missing since they took Leetch with the 9th pick in 1986 (the best player in the whole draft if you ask me) That all star talent that can change the make up of the team.. and like Leetch these two kids look like the real deal.. I am happy eiither way .. but Kakko is the guy I am thinking will be the guy...he is playing men now and playing well.. Hughes has been great with kids.. cant wait to see them both mature..

Its not a matter of who I, you or the Rangers want, its a matter of who the Devils want. And I think it could go either way. Does Shero think Hischier can carry a team? He's had a nice start to his career, But can he? Does he want another center to give them a formidable 1-2 punch or does he want a bookend for Hischier on the number one line for the next 10 years. Either way I said it days ago the Rangers can't lose. Its hopefully a Ovechkin, malkin draft.

At days end I agree we cannot lose. I also think this could/will be a OV Malkin type draft. I also think the chances are still better the Devs take Hughes. This has been the Hughes draft for years now. Lose for Hughes. Plus the the Devs organization, and people in it, have many ties to Hughes and his family.

Now none of those sway a decision if they think Kakko is the better player, but when it is a close toss-up I do think that stuff matters a little. This seems to be a close toss-up for sure.

But if the Devs surprise and go Kakko, we should be very happy to grab Hughes and go about our business with a 1-2 punch of Z and Hughes down the middle. That is a great base.

I just remembered that Kakko has been playing with Lauri Pajuniemi, who turned some heads playing on a line with Chytil during the development camp and Traverse City showing good chemistry.

Not sure how much actual playing time Kakko and Pajuniemi saw together, but they certainly know eachother, and with a little luck will end up on the same team down the road as NY Rangers

Kakko isn't going to the combine.... I think that may be good news for Rangers, as NJD won't be able to do interviews and physical exams on both players... at least not at the combine? idk how it all works, or quite frankly how much the combine factors in to this decision....
