It sounds like the Rangers have or are going to sign Micheal Haley to a contract

One question - WHY?

If a goon it up player is needed (i.e., one with little to no skills like Haley), why not wait for a bigger, slightly more capable one drops from another team as one inevitably will?

Because, he's the perfect guy in the #22 spot. I don't expect him to play too much. Most likely only after a loss where we just had our teeth kicked in. He's there as a backup, an extra guy for practices, and leadership. Would you rather have a young skill guy riding the pine?

Remember the time that Kevin Hayes got benched for Tanner Glass in a playoff elimination game?

It will surprise nobody here that I approve of this signing. I'd prefer someone who wins a few fights instead of Haley but whatever.

If you've been watching the games this preseason, or even just following the highlights on the NHL Network or Facebook, the league is moving back towards the fighter as having a spot in the lineup. Maybe not the true enforcer of pre-2000 hockey, but a fighter nonetheless.

Look up Scott Sabourin of the Sens and what he's been doing in pre-season games against Toronto and Montreal. Undrafted, 27 year old rookie who's on the roster mostly because he can throw hands and he drops the gloves without hesitation.

Did anyone see Ross Johnston on the Isles the other night? He'll be on the roster for Opening Night.

The last two Cup winners were heavy teams. The trend is there, and the Rangers need to be prepared.

You pay a terrible price putting a no talent goon on one of your lines. He basically ruins all the offense. So, you can't just do that and say fine. You have to try and find a tough guy that can play some.

pick someone else to be our goon.... please...I watched the Islander's Johnston destroy Haley the other night and Haley didn't look like he was up to the challenge at all. It was hard to watch frankly

We could have signed the guy this off-season to replace Namestnikov and Haley.Maroo.n was available and signed for 900k.Gives similar offense as Namestnikov and is a much bigger player than Haley.I said last year that Namestnikov at 4 million was a mistake.

Haley’s deal is reportedly a two way deal. So it’s likely he’s just a stop gap until somebody younger better at that game comes along. More likely he will be looking after Chytil and Kravstov and company in Hartford. Anybody that listened to JD in his announcer days didn’t hear to many bad things said about tough guys unless one was being a idiot. He knows you can’t have idiots running Kappo, Hajek, Fox ect. and Haley will do that until a better guy gets brought in. I just wish the Rangers would wise up and make sure the guy wears a face shield to have a chance. Punching a guy’s faceshield as hard as you can Is just stupid, no other word for it. At least wear a shield yourself.
Most on here against Haley are way to worried, relax Haley is not replacing Chytil or Kravtsov.
Anyone who watched the Isles running the Rangers knows they need some beef, preferably that can play. I’m sure Brendan Smith gotthe talk in camp exit/expectation interviews.

Until something better comes along, Haley needs to be in the lineup. He's terrible, but he's also willing to take on guys like Johnston. There's a guy on Washington named Tom Wilson. Would you like a top 6 guy to tangle with him, or an expendable player like Haley?

If they had to do it all over again, I'd wager that Tampa would've dressed a guy like Haley in Game 2 or 3 of their series last year. Even a talented team like them needs somebody to do the nasty work. It's not debatable anymore.

Micheal Haley's professional tryout with the New York Rangers has landed the centre a contract. According to Frank Seravalli of TSN, it's worth $700k at the NHL level, $275k in the AHL, and includes a guaranteed $300k.

Stupid signing......”enforcers aren’t needed anymore”. Plus, we have Lemieux and Lindgren (oh wait, he didn’t make the team in one of many dumb roster moves)

The leader in majors last year had 7. That might not be all fights. Lemieux had 6 majors. Haley had 5. DeAngelo had 3. You can't agrue that enforcers aren't needed. They aren't. However, somebody to discourage your players getting run is a good thing if they can play. Those types are rare. Rangers will have some guys to do that they just have to find their balls. Lemieux can do it. Kreider can and should do it more. Trouba probably can do it. DeAngelo has done it and he's not big at all. Smith can but shouldn't be on the roster other than in the stands.

If the Islanders want to put rejects out there like that, eventually they will be in the box all game and their team won't score goals.

700k is beer money in NY....not much downside and he probably wont even play on the big club. He signed a 2 way deal but will likely be enforcing in Hartford.

I think you'll see him in a handful of games during the year, so wouldn't get too excited either way about him

Agreed, who do they want called up to replace a fourth line grit guy?

I think Haley is fine if you want your fourth line to be a grit line, the issue people have with him is that I don't want a grit-based fourth line. It's less a personnel criticism and more a direction/coaching decision.

I think eventually we will see Lemieux on the top 2 lines opposite Kakko, or perhaps on his off-wing opposite Panarin. Lemieux has decent speed, good hands, and he drives to the net. He also will stand up for his mates. Moving him up would solve the issue.

As for Haley, I'd like to see him every so often to keep things interesting, until a better option comes along.
