RANGERS (37-28-4) at AVALANCHE (41-20-8)

10 p.m. ET; ESPN+, ALT, MSG+, NHL.TV

The Game

Nathan MacKinnon will be out 1-2 weeks because of a lower-body injury and will not play when the Colorado Avalanche try to gain in the Central Division race, against the New York Rangers at Pepsi Center on Wednesday.

MacKinnon, fifth among NHL scorers with 93 points (35 goals, 58 assists) in 69 games, was injured in the second period of the Avalanche's 3-1 loss at the Los Angeles Kings on Monday.

The Avalanche, 8-2-2 in their past 12 games and 16-5-2 in their past 23, trail the St. Louis Blues by two points for the Central Division lead; the Blues play at the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday.

Cale Makar will return for Colorado after missing five games with an upper-body injury sustained in a 3-2 win at the Nashville Predators on Feb. 29. The defenseman is second among NHL rookie scorers with 47 points (12 goals, 35 assists) in 56 games.

The Rangers, 2-4-0 in their past six games following a five-game winning streak, are three points behind the Carolina Hurricanes and Columbus Blue Jackets for the first wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Eastern Conference.

Players to watch

Rangers center Mika Zibanejad has 12 points (10 goals, two assists) in a five-game point streak and has scored at least one goal in 11 of his past 12 games.

Avalanche goalie Pavel Francouz is 7-2-1 with a 2.27 goals-against average, .924 save percentage and one shutout in his past 10 starts.

They said it

"We're hard to play against when we skate, put pressure on guys in our zone, and anywhere really. We've proved that over the year." -- Rangers center Mika Zibanejad

"Nate's one of the best players in the world right now. Each and every night he makes a huge difference, so it's going to be different not having him, but for us it's next man up; someone has to step up." -- Avalanche center Tyson Jost on the loss of center Nathan MacKinnon

Rangers projected lineup

Phillip Di Giuseppe -- Mika Zibanejad -- Pavel Buchnevich

Tthe Avalanche, who along with the Blue Jackets have to be the two most unlucky teams this season from an injury perspective.

Avs have won just one of their last 4, and 1-2-1 over that period, but are back on home ice after a three game road trip. They're a tough team to beat, and with the Rangers a little beat up themselves after last night's stop to Dallas, it remains to be seen whether they can back their performance up.

Avs will likely play a patience game with the Rangers, something that the Stars were immediately on the back foot and had little capability to execute until they got some momentum in the third. I expect the Avs to play more like St Louis, and be ready from the start...and to keep the pressure on troughout much of the game

The Avs have defensemen that activate and can change a game, unlike Dallas. Makar can beat you on his own, so the Rangers wingers need to be aware of where he is at all times and take away his space.

No other Eastern wild card teams are playing tonight, so the Rangers either gain some ground or burn a precious game with only 13 (counting this one) left.

The first time these two teams faced off at MSG was truly the one time I felt like the Avs just mailed one in. Putrid effort all-around. I'm fine with either team winning, I would just like to see quality hockey.

If there was a time to STRIKE, now is it. Avs are comfortably in a playoff spot (for now) and are basically missing an entire starting lineup's worth of players, including their starting goalie and two best centers. This should be an easier contest than the Stars game last night (and Avs fans are quite grateful the Rangers took care of that team BTW).

Also, this might be the last sporting event to take place in Denver before coronavirus measures are put into place, whatever those may be.

I am having a hard time trying to think of a Ranger who has been on a hotter scoring streak than MZIB

Georgiev beaten twice short side. Again.

Strome should have 12 goals tonight.

The second goal he was completely screened, not sure many would have stopped that one. Strome though, wow...really having a tough night

Rangers lose in overtime....finishing just wasn't there tonight, some great goaltending from the Avs netminder and some missed opportunities. Think Georgiev might want the first and the last goals back

He assisted on all three Avs goals so...yeah, he did!

I wanted a fun game and well...I got one. I'm not thrilled that Joonas Donskoi got concussed AGAIN, but otherwise it was a fun game.

They should start calling Ryan "Strometrooper" given how many wide open nets he missed on. There's some funny trending stuff on Twitter about that.

Panarin and Zibanejad were amazing, couldn't even be denied with 13 seconds remaining.

As for the Avs, this was a pretty ugly win but that's unfortunately how they've had to do it. And now they're looking at ANOTHER injury. Bum deal...

Well gents, it was fun watching what may be the last NHL game for a while. I don't know if the NHL is going to wait until a player is diagnosed like the NBA did, but they shouldn't. Stay safe, stay healthy, and for the love of God, STAY INSIDE.

The Avs team is the team to watch, to beat next few years. Rangers have taken the best teams in the league all the way to the end & played them right there with them. Next season the Rangers will be a team to watch a force, if healthy. P.S.: Of course all of that now is up in the air with this virus situation.

Fox 11 points in his last 9 games. Kakko scores 2 goals last game and plays 10 1/2 minutes while Lemieux who makes moronic play after moron play, plays 13 1/2 minutes. These are things that make you question if this guy is really the coach going forward. Gauthier who shows these great flashes gets 7 minutes of icetime.

Lemieux kills penalties, Kakko doesn't. The ice time differential is right there.

Gauthier had 10:57 vs Dallas the night before and 10:30 vs NJ. With the team trailing going into the 3rd, Quinn double shifted Zib and Panarin. The 4th line loses those minutes.
