Like this a lot depending on trade and movement clauses which there shouldn’t be many if any. Until you get into a long term deal has a young player earned those clauses. Hopefully the Rangers have the hammer on trades. If moveable and he doesn’t deliver it’s a trade-able contract. If young guys show up and he is not at the top of the chain he’s a real nice piece to offload at the trade deadline in two years especially with one year of rfa status left after this contract expires. The only down side I see is if he lights it up and his defence evolves like it should, he’s gonna get a ton of money when this contract expires.

One more year should raise his trade value a ton as his production should rocket up on the PP with Lafreniere here. Then some teams will probably make substantial offers for him.

The pandemic surely has something to do with it. There is uncertainty and if the players agents are smart, they will take as much as they can get and be reasonable about it.

Definitely a nice bridge/flexible deal for both player & team. If he’s too expensive after these next seasons & Kakko, Lafreniere, Fox, Gauthier, Chytil, & potentially Lundqvist, Miller progress... you can move him (his offense) for very significant assets.

Yeah, this is a very reasonable deal. If his form drops, then you have the option of trading him (he'll only be a short time removed from that 4th in the league performance) or simply parting ways after the two seasons. If he maintains form or even improves, then they have the option of either dealing him or signing him to another deal.

Now if we could send him to the Rod Langway School of Defense...

I think that will improve. He knows he's sitting in the drivers seat for a long term $7,000,000 plus next contract after the next two years, but he has to be reliable defensively to get that type of deal.
