Othmann loves nothing more than to collect the puck on the breakout, lead the charge into the offensive zone, and turn the corner on opposing defenders. He always attacks at full speed, playing a high-pace style, and pressuring with that same level of intensity. He pressures on the forecheck, plays the body, and takes good routes to cut off the opposition’s attempts at a breakout. -EliteProspects 2021 NHL Draft Guide

On loan from the OHL, Othmann headed over to Switzerland to play against men in the nation’s second-best pro league. And the kid didn’t mind his manners – he threw his body around and fought opponents. There's so much to like about the tough forward.

“I like him a lot, he’s a good kid,” one scout said. “He has the potential to play anywhere in your lineup. His skill and hockey sense are underrated, and when he plays with good players, he’s going to be fine. And he competes. When he was playing against men in Switzerland, he was an agitator, guys were going after him. He’s a really grounded, dedicated kid. He’s going to make it. I have no doubt.”

Other talent hawks are still trying to get a beat on Othmann’s upside, especially after fellow OHLer Mason McTavish joined him in Switzerland. “He was actually better before McTavish got there, then McTavish took some of his ice time,” another scout said. “Othmann is a scorer first, and he works hard. He’s a tough one for me to wrap my head around at the next level. He has elements that will allow him to contribute in the middle six.”

Othmann is an offensive force as he’s classified as having one of the best shots and being one of the top goal scorers in this draft class. The way he angles his body and positioning when he gets his shot off is already at an NHL level. He has great accuracy, his release is lightning quick and he gets a lot of power in his shot when he winds up. He’s always scanning the ice for the open areas just waiting to be teed up for a one-timer. As a result of that vision, he always seems to be in the right spot at the right time.

You have to love the ranking guy Banter uses at top down hockey. He has Othmann ranked at 111. How can everyone else basically have him between 16 and 22 and you come up 111.

And the Buffalo pick Isak Rosen he has at 217 when everyone else has him from 17 to 30. Is he just that much smarter than everyone else? I have my doubts.

Thoughts on the pick: Othmann brings a lot of elements to an NHL team with his great puck skills, shot and physicality. He’s a very good player. I am surprised the Rangers took another winger with a high pick, as they have a lot of young depth wingers, as opposed to a center, which they don’t have. But he’s a great prospect who projects as a top-six NHL forward

I mostly go there to laugh at the outrage that comes from there constantly. Some of the stats are useful, but have to be taken with a grain of salt imo. These guys live and die by them and I find it hilarious. Analytics work best in a sport like baseball because the entire sport is based on the same thing happening over and over again. No matter the situation, there is always one pitcher throwing to one hitter. But come playoff time where you actually face good pitching every game, the analytics fall apart. Now moving over runners and grinding out runs matters, and teams built on the homerun struggle(though in a lot of cases your opponent is built the same way and someone has to win). It only gets progressively worse in each sport where more things are happening at once and the actions of others can have a greater impact on what you do and how you perform.

They are useful. But you can't judge athletes on a spreadsheet and sometimes I find it hard to believe most of them actually watch games.

Meh... Bolduc was the obvious choice, but we never go with the obvious choice with mid-first round picks.

Those who know Brennan Othmann, the Rangers’ first-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft, all have the same thing to say about him.

He cares. A lot.

And they don’t say it in cliched terms that parrot lines about work ethic and effort. He cares in the obsessive, need-to-be-better, fix-every-deficiency kind of way, they’ll tell you.

If you ask around, you’ll hear other things about him, too. Like that he’s one of the 2021 draft class’ best scorers. But everyone always comes back to the way he has immersed himself in the pursuit of his NHL dream.

Some describe it as a blessing, the kind of feverishness that they wish everyone had.

You make a very good point Eddie. Bolduc the center which they need more than another winger has familiarity with Lafrenierre. A guy that could be in the 2Center conversation 2022-2023. Instead another top six and more likely second line winger to compete with Kravstov, Lafrenierre, Kakko, Panarin and Kreider.
Drury appeared to be focused on grittier, hard to play against guys which I like, all in all accomplished that. Now we wait two years and see how he did.

Yes, basically it can't slide when he turns 20, and it's based on September 15th as the cutoff. So he's 18 now, turns 19 in January, so it can slide twice.

I've liked this kid's attitude so far, in the interviews, reports and snippets I've seen, and his style of course is intriguing. Fully expect him to be in Flint this year, but I think he's a guy worth watching. I don't think he's going to be an NHL star per se, but he seems to be pretty mature, and seems to be coachable, and has good talent.

Why can't anybody get the fukkkking kids name right. It's Othmann! Thing I like about him from all scouting reports despite his talent and especially his shot is they say how much he cares about being great. There have been a lot of pusssies on this team the past 5 years that sure don't have that quality.

One game on a line with McKegg and Brodzinski = hardly noticable. 11:55 ice time does not help his cause. I would imagine he will be sent packing to the OHL soon. Hopefully he can dominate at that level.

Yep, can't tell with linemates like that. Cuylle looked like he's figuring it out. Those are the type of players need to draft once in a while. Not pansies like Kravtsov.

The better Jones looks the more I like our chances of going out and getting a Tkachuk from Ottawa. He is done there. He clearly doesn't want to play there. If it costs Jones, Hajek, Cuylle and Chytil so be it. He's worth it. He can be had. For once I would like to see a GM of ours have some balls and get a guy like that.
