New York Rangers legend and Hockey Hall of Famer Rod Gilbert has passed away at the age of 80.

”I am deeply saddened by the passing of Rod Gilbert - one of the greatest Rangers to ever play for our organization and one of the greatest ambassadors the game of hockey has ever had," said Madison Square Garden Sports Corp Executive Chairman James Dolan in a statement.

“While his on-ice achievements rightly made him a Hall of Famer, it was his love for the Rangers and the people of New York that endeared him to generations of fans and forever earned him the title, 'Mr. Ranger.' Our thoughts are with Rod's wife, Judy, and the entire Gilbert family during this difficult time. They will always be a part of the Rangers family.”

Sad indeed. Was bigger than life in his hay day. Overcame the back issues, stellar career, Ranger icon.

A great Ranger and a wonderful, nice man. The Rangers were smart to have him for all those years after he retired.

Sad that he and Ratelle never won a Cup. Glad he was a Ranger, but probably should have played for the Canadians (they grabbed up all the local talent back then), where he surely would have won a Cup. Sad that he and Ratelle were separated in their prime. I met Gilbert twice. Once when I was a little kid (when he winked at my big sister and made her blush), and once about 10 years ago. Nice guy. RIP Rodrigue
