The 1979 NHL/CHL rule about 18/19 year olds not allowed to play in the AHL needs to be eliminated. Othmann's career and ability to earn a real salary (vs $150/wk) for his talent should not be held up because of this bs agreement that just enriches CHL owners. So few 18/19 year olds are able to compete in the NHL. It is pretty clear that Othmann spending another season playing with teenagers will be a waste of a year. The AHL might be the best place for him to continue his career.

Could the Rangers loan him to the Swedish Hockey League? At least he would be playing against men at a similar level to the AHL.

I think there's certainly a case to be made for revisiting the restriction, though I suspect there'd be more players than a handful that would end up in the AHL over the CHL. Given the choice, I think a lot of teams would want more control over their prospects, so their might be a risk that a good number would end up in the AHL...that's not to say that all would, as we see teams happy to leave prospects in Europe for instance, but still an impact nonetheless.

Then you'd have to figure what the impact would be to the CHL as development leagues for the draft etc...and whether that would be impacted or not with less competition in the league from higher end talent. There's also an impact on AHL veterans as they would likely get squeezed out too, and players would likely have a shorter overall lifespan in the AHL as a result of the influx of players...which perhaps would make the ECHL better, or it might also have an impact on the AHL as a development league.

As it stands now, the players are getting almost nothing playing in the CHL other than the potential promise of an NHL payday, which obviously only happens for a small portion...so it does seem unfair from that perspective.

These CHL owners have the dream situation that every for profit business owner would want: they sell a product created by free labor that is also the product. There are 60 CHL teams using free labor/free product to make money and pay everybody involved except the product people pay to see - these unpaid teenagers who can be traded like professionals and play a professional schedule of 68 plus games. It is disgusting.

1. The CHL would have to adjust to losing players to the AHL. If they wanted to keep certain players they could always PAY THEM!
2. If you are good enough to play in the AHL, some illegal agreement that does not represent any CHL players' interests should not restrict you from earning a living, especially when the CHL does not pay any salary for your 50 hour per week job. It is amazing that the CHL teams who do not pay you can prevent you from leaving to a salaried level of hockey.
3. Worrying about AHL vets is like worrying about NHL vets. If a vet cannot help a team anymore they will find a way to get rid of the vet.

itsmcilrathtime - 2022-08-16 8:49 AM The overwhelming feedback is that Othmann is carrying his ass.

Yes of course hundreds forwarding you reports. In case they didn't mention Othmanns ice time was drastically reduced today, he didn't play with Berard, or McMaster.  A couple of shifts a period. Meanwhile Bedard is more than fine on his own. Othman is a good player but he nor anyone else is carrying Bedard's ass.
