Wow have the Rangers ever come close to trotting out the number and caliber of prospects in any year, of their prospects participating this year? Don't think so. Some of everything, size, grit, scoring, goaltending. No defensemen but at this point none required. Going to be a good watch.

Well, went back to the beginning of the Cap era, and this appears to be the most in any year. I may have a couple of mistakes here and there...perhaps one or two of these were drafted after the WJC, and maybe one or two trades were done earlier than I anticipated (e.g. Fox and Lindgren both played for the US, but I think it was before they joined the Rangers).

Also a lot of players who very early in their careers ended up in the Rangers system, like Gauthier, Syvret and others...but they had already played in the WJC

2021 - Garand, Schneider (CAN), Berard, Skinner (USA)
2020 - Lafreniere (CAN), Henriksson, Lundkvist (SWE), Jones, K Miller (USA)
2019 - Kravtsov (RUS), Lundkvist (SWE), K Miller (USA)
2018 - Chytil (CZE), Andersson (SWE)
2017 - Zobrovsky (RUS), Huska (SLK)
2016 - Saarela (FIN), Huska (SLK), Halverson (USA)
2015 - Duclair (CAN), Buchnevich, Shesterkin (RUS), Halverson (USA)
2014 - Buchnevich (RUS), Skjei (USA)
2013 - JT Miller (USA)
2012 - JT Miller (USA)
2011 - Fast (SWE), Kreider (USA)
2010 - Stepan, Kreider, R Bourque (USA)
2009 - Kundratek (CZE), Grachev (RUS)
2008 - Kundratek (CZE), Anisimov, Cherepanov (RUS), Hagelin (SWE), Sanguinetti (USA)
2007 - Pyatt, Staal (CAN), Kveton (CZE), Anisimov (RUS), Zaborsky (SLK)
2006 - Pyatt, Staal (CAN), Bahensky (CZE), Korpikoski (FIN)

Sykora with a secondary assist and draws a 5 on 3 that ultimately allows the Slovaks to tie it up 4-4 (they end up losing 5-5). Played PP, PK, wore an A and was a top 6 forward. Didn't really show much with the puck, was involved a lot, in the slot, around the net, along the boards....was the guy hyping up his team on the bench after they pulled within 4-3, seems like kind of a Ryan Callahan light kind of player.

Chmelar looked like he was a 4th liner, didn't play a whole lot, and not particularly noticeable...saw him stand someone up along the boards, but otherwise not a big impact for him in Game 1

Othmann will be a healthy scratch for Canada's game today, perhaps because he took a couple of penalties in the last warm-up game against Sweden Monday. Latvia played yesterday, and should be an easier opponent, so wouldn't read too much into it yet.

Othman with a good game against the Checks. Laid a lick on a Dman and showed a abundance of battle and compete.

And Vaisanen scored for Finland so that’s all six forwards the rangers have in the tourney with a goal

Sykora showing some hands against Latvia

I watched the Slovakia/Latvia OT. Sykora stood out head and shoulders above everyone else. Panarinesque. Give him time and space and he's an exciting player.

Garand starting for Canada against Finland. That’s great he’s the go to guy. A lot of talk before the tournament Ottawa’s pick Cossa was going to be the number 1.

Watched my first Conner Bedard interview he looks like he’s 12 years old. He grows three or four inches and a few more lbs and he’s got time, the package just got bumped up. Looking like a very very special player.

Othmann now with 6 points despite being a 19 year old (he's actually eligible to play the WJC-U20 next year unlike most of the other players in the tourney. He also missed the first game, and then played his first game on the 4th line. 2 Goals, 4 assists

I'd rather have Othmann on our 4th line than going back to juniors. Lafreniere and Kakko are elite scoring talents that need big minutes. Othmann probably would be better off for one year getting used to the NHL game playing a smaller role than wasting his time going back to juniors where he will learn nothing.

The 1979 NHL/CHL rule about 18/19 year olds not allowed to play in the AHL needs to be eliminated. Othmann's career and ability to earn a real salary (vs $150/wk) for his talent should not be held up because of this bs agreement that just enriches CHL owners. So few 18/19 year olds are able to compete in the NHL. It is pretty clear that Othmann spending another season playing with teenagers will be a waste of a year. The AHL might be the best place for him to continue his career.

Could the Rangers loan him to the Swedish Hockey League? At least he would be playing against men at a similar level to the AHL.

Good idea. He played in Europe before. I agree, that rule is stupid. Or it needs to be modified. At least it should be if you're over 19 1/2 years of age, you are eligible for the AHL.

I think there's certainly a case to be made for revisiting the restriction, though I suspect there'd be more players than a handful that would end up in the AHL over the CHL. Given the choice, I think a lot of teams would want more control over their prospects, so their might be a risk that a good number would end up in the AHL...that's not to say that all would, as we see teams happy to leave prospects in Europe for instance, but still an impact nonetheless.

Then you'd have to figure what the impact would be to the CHL as development leagues for the draft etc...and whether that would be impacted or not with less competition in the league from higher end talent. There's also an impact on AHL veterans as they would likely get squeezed out too, and players would likely have a shorter overall lifespan in the AHL as a result of the influx of players...which perhaps would make the ECHL better, or it might also have an impact on the AHL as a development league.

As it stands now, the players are getting almost nothing playing in the CHL other than the potential promise of an NHL payday, which obviously only happens for a small portion...so it does seem unfair from that perspective.
