Tyler Arnason joins the Rangers with his career heading the wrong way |
Posted by OTG Staff ≡ 4:57:26 PM - July 3, 2009
The Rangers added two depth players today, with the signings of centers Tyler Arnason and Corey Locke. With only six centermen signed in the organization, the additions of Arnason and Locke provide the Rangers with a few options in New York and in Hartford.
Originally drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks, Arnason started his NHL career by recording 19 and 22 goals respectively in his first two full seasons. Coming out of the lockout season, the young forward struggled first with Chicago, and then did little to impress in a late season playoffs run with the Senators which saw him register just four assists in the final nineteen regular season games....more

Dany Heatley may have wanted to come to New York, but Glen Sather looked elsewhere yesterday for scoring help. The Rangers officially announced they had signed Marian Gaborik to a long term contract yesterday (5 years - $37.5M) in a move that immediately brings some scoring ability into the mix. more

Active Day For Rangers

The Rangers opened up the 2009-10 season with a splash Wednesday, signing free agent forwards Marian Gaborik and Donald Brashear and bidding two thirds of their checking unit adieu with the departures of Colton Orr (Maple Leafs) and Fredrik Sjostrom (Flames). The moves followed Tuesday's trade of Scott Gomez to the Montreal Canadiens, in a week that has certainly changed the tone of the organization. more

Rangers are going FORWARD
|
|

When the Rangers had their end of year meeting, coach Tortorella was point blank with the players about what direction HIS Rangers are going . When Tortorella won the cup in Tampa only 5 years ago, he had solid goaltending(Khabibulin),offensive type defensemen(Boyle,Cullimore,Kubina,Sydor,Sarich along with Lukowich and Rumble), huge forwards, and a North American flavor with 19 players from the USA/Canada while only 7 were from overseas. This Rangers team is going to take the offensive attack and allout effort needed to succeed. Tortorella has no problem letting a player not doing the right thing either getting a seat or getting him off the roster by demotion and/or traded. The perfect examples are last years playoffs by sitting Avery and letting Naslund know he wasn't needed this coming season. He let him retire rather than getting cut or sent down to Hartford. This team is shaping up comparable to that 2004 team(Lundqvist-Staal,Girardi,Redden,Rozsival,Mara,and Gilroy--but forwards need upgrade and size). more

| RUMOR MILL |
Friday - July 3rd
The Rangers are reportedly in the market for a center now that they have signed Marian Gaborik. While Saku Koivu has reportedly drawn interest from the Rangers, it's believed that he's considering Minnesota first. Saku's younger brother Mikko plays for the Wild.
Another name that's been thrown out is Brendan Morrison, though there's no suggestion yet the Rangers have made contact with his agent.
Another player the Rangers have reportedly shown interest in is former Blueshirt Sergei Zubov. Zubov missed much of last year with injuries, but is reportedly drawing interest from the Blues as well as the Stars and Rangers.
