RUMOR MILL

Wednesday - December 1st

It seems every time that it looks like Ryan Strome and the Rangers are set to part ways, things change...and it looks that way again. With Strome set to be a UFA next Summer, the Rangers have begun discussions on what an extension might look like per Larry Brooks in the New York Post.

At 29 years old, there's some risk, well that and the lack of Cap space the Rangers are going to have over the coming years. Still, it will be interesting if this goes anywhere, and would put an end to the speculation over how to fill the void on the second line.

Conversely, it might also mean that the possibility of keeping Filip Chytil longer term might end. When you look at movable contracts, Chytil is signed for this season and next, but if his play improves, then it would seem challenging to fit him beyond that.

Also in the news is the request for a trade by Boston winger Jake DeBrusk. The 25 year old has struggled to break through, and has seen his ice time diminish. The Rangers are reportedly one of a number of teams to have interest, per Darren Dreger on TSN.

It's no secret that the Rangers are still yet to solve their winger situation, though it could come from within the current line-up, especially if Kakko continues to play well, along with Gauthier and Hunt.

1926 Conn Smythe fired

The Rangers' first General Manager and coach never even got to see his team play.  Before the season started, he was abruptly fired by President John Hammond, rumored to have been because he refused to sign Babe Dye - though this was never made public.  Smythe would go on to take over the Toronto St. Patricks, change their name to the Maple Leafs and give them then current Blue and White color scheme.  The Conn Smythe trophy given to the best performer in the NHL playoffs is named after him.
