Sessions 1-4 Sunday |
| |
The Rangers came out with
a different look today, creating five lines that
included several of the more promising prospects in camp
so far. The morning session started off once again
with drills in the first session followed by a thirty
minute scrimmage and some more drills in the
second. The lines for the first session turned out
to be Rucinsky-Lindros-Carter, Murray-Holik-Ortmeyer,
Simon-Messier-Stals, Cullen-Dusablon-Lawson and
Wirll-Ulmer-Guite. On defense, de Vries and
Poti played together while Sloboda, Aufiero, Purinton,
Jakopin, Nycholat and Wilson all dressed. The
goaltending was Markkanen, Meyer and St Germaine.
The afternoon sessions saw lines of
Hlavac-Nedved-Kovalev, Barnaby-Moore-Lundmark,
Petrovicky-Larose-Lacouture, Scott-Andrews-MacDonald and
a fifth line that had Gernander and Wiseman skating with
the mysterious #61 who I mistakenly identified as Ryan
Cuthbert. Mironov and Tjutin saw significant time
together and Lampman spent time with Kasparaitis
allowing State and Rawlyk to continue to be paired while
Weller and Kinch shared duties. Dunham, Osaer and
Labarbera were in nets.
Again the Rangers worked on several drills, both skating
and positioning. One drill of particular interest
featured an attempt to get the group of five players to
move as a box in the offensive zone, putting pressure on
a phantom puck carrier, represented by one of the
coaching staff. Again Sather and his assistants
had the team skating hard, with "suicides",
push-ups and other skating drills causing many of the
players to end their second session breathing hard as
they stretched for the final few minutes on the ice.
Today's sessions showed a steady progression, with
several players putting in better performances than the
previous days. Chris Simon was one who looked as
if he was participating a little more today, while Fedor
Tjutin bounced back from yesterday's indifferent
performance with a little more poise today. Paul
Healey finally hit the ice too (rib injury) although was
limited to work in the non-contact drills, as was
Malakhov earlier in the day.
It was clear though which players were trying to secure
spots either on the team or in Hartford.
Petrovicky drew plenty of attention whenever he was on
the ice during the scrimmage, while Moore, Murray,
Ortmeyer and Stals all drew positive reviews and a
chance to practice with some of the NHLers today.
Of the NHL roster, Lindros continued to play well and
Carter stepped it up with several nice shots that found
the net during the drills. Lindros too drew
applause when he scored in the morning scrimmage,
converting a Rucinsky pass from behind the net.
Kasparaitis appeared to be enjoying camp, crying out
each time his team scored a goal.
The overall sense is that many of the players are
happier this year and are particularly pleased with the
focus on drills instead of scrimmages, and perhaps too a
smaller camp roster that allows more attention to be
given to individual players.
