Position Breakdown
Left Wing --
Locks:  Trevor Gillies, Alexandre Giroux, Garth Murray, Chad Wiseman
Bubble:  Robin Big Snake, Lucas Lawson, Craig Weller
ECHL Bound:
Skinny:  Returning AHL all-star Chad Wiseman, along with NHL rookie Garth Murray and promising Alexandre Giroux look to be the locks on the left wing.  Gillies will remain on the roster as an enforcer and could play either wing or defense if called upon.

Intriguing prospect, Robin Big Snake will be looking to earn a pro contract or return to Portland of the WHL.

Lawson will need to find room on a crowded roster or both return to the ECHL, while Weller has plenty of competition and may either end up on the bench or back in the ECHL.
Center --
Locks:  Blair Betts, Dwight Helminen, Dominic Moore
Bubble: Ryan Hollweg, Marcus Jonasen, Layne Ulmer
ECHL Bound: Morten Ask, Kevin Cooper
Skinny:  The center position is proving to be a little crowded and we may very well see one or more of the centers moved to wing in order to fit on the roster.  Marcus Jonasen will more than likely return to Tri City of the WHL, but will get a solid look while Hollweg and Ulmer appear to be the most likely candidates for a league or position change.

An ECHL All-star last season, Ask looks all but certain to return to the league this year, though it will be to Las Vegas where he is currently under contract.  Likewise for Cooper, a division III college standout with Middlebury who signed an ECHL contract with the Pee Dee Pride.
Right Wing --
Locks: Jozef Balej, Ken Gernander, Jed Ortmeyer
Bubble:  Brandon Cullen, Ryan Cuthbert, Lee Falardeau, Michael Henrich, Juris Stals, Joe Tallari
ECHL Bound:  Mike Wirll
Skinny:  With Hugh Jessiman electing to stay on at Dartmouth and Jozef Balej perhaps electing to go to Slovakia for the season, the right wing position appears to be one of the weakest on the team.

If Balej stays, he will get much of the first line duty, with Gernander and Ortmeyer providing veteran and defensive support.  There exists probably one more spot (or two if Balej leaves) on the roster and the likes of Cullen, Cuthbert, Falardeau, Stals and Tallari (if signed) will attempt to win it.

Cuthbert might have an edge if Balej leaves, while Falardeau offers size and the option of playing at center also.  Henrich will be playing for a contract and will need to show something if he hopes to stay, though his connection with Sather may buy him some time (he was a 1st round pick of the Oilers in 1998)

Mike Wirll figures to return to the ECHL once again.
Defense --
Locks: Martin Grenier, Maxim Kondratiev, Bryce Lampman, Jeff MacMillan, Lawrence Nycholat, Thomas Pock, Fedor Tyutin
Bubble: David Liffiton, Jake Taylor
ECHL Bound: Ryan Glenn, Steven MacIntyre, Rory Rawlyk
Skinny:  It's a crowded blueline for the Pack at the moment, but there's a chance that Kondratiev will return to Russia if he decides to exercise his "out" clause 30 days into the season.

Pock and Nycholat figure to be the offensive specialists on the blueline, along with MacMillan while Lampman, Tyutin and Kondratiev (if he elects to stay) to provide the steadiness.

Grenier, Gillies and Weller could find themselves splitting time between forward and the blueline, with the latter two perhaps more likely to move up.

Liffiton needs to outplay one of those in front of him to take a spot, something that is not out of the question, but given the depth he may start the season in Charlotte.  Taylor too will find it hard to crack the line-up and may be best suited for the ECHL at this stage.

MacIntyre and Rawlyk both figure to return to Charlotte, and Glenn (if he signs) will more than likely join them.
Goaltender --
Locks: Dan Blackburn, Jason Labarbera, Stephen Valiquette
Bubble: None
ECHL Bound: Mike Ayers, Randy Petruk
Skinny:  With Dan Blackburn's health questionable and the departure of Phil Osaer, the Pack will more than likely go with the same pairing they ended last season with.

The AHL MVP, Labarbera is likely to begin the season as the starter with Valiquette serving as backup, with Ayers and Petruk heading south.
SWOT
Strengths --
The blueline appears to be strong in terms of offense and puck moving ability and the Wolf Pack look to have several options when it comes to keeping things on the up and up.

Goaltender looks very strong once again this year, with Labarbera returning and Valiquette set to back him up.  The December return of Blackburn should only help matters.
Weaknesses --
Defense at this stage looks a little weak in the physicality department, something that the addition of Liffiton could help.  But with the number of players requiring spots, it may be a difficult proposition to get him on the squad at the beginning of the season.

If Balej leaves, the Pack might find themselves a little light in the scoring department.  Dominic Moore will need to step it up and new additions like Helminen and Hollweg along with the return of Garth Murray will need to find ways to chip in.
Opportunities --
Perhaps the biggest opportunity will be for those forwards looking to contribute offensively.  The Rangers aren't overly blessed with proven scorers in their system, so several of the prospects will be looking to put their best foot forward in this year's AHL.
Threats --
The loss of Balej and Kondratiev if they elect to join Jamie Lundmark in Europe will hurt the offense substantially.
INJURIES
10/10 --
Lucas Lawson apparently has a groin strain

Dwight Helminen and Ken Gernander did not appear in the list of injured players in a recent HartfordWolfpack.com story, so there might be some question as to their injuries.

10/6 --
Dwight Helminen has a sprained ankle and will miss tonight's game

Thomas Pöck will also miss tonight's game with an abdominal strain

Lee Falardeau has what is termed as a "slight concussion"

10/4 --
Ken Gernander likely to miss the first two preseason games with a hip flexor

Brandon Cullen also is likely to miss the two games with a groin injury

Ryan Glenn has a fractured jaw and was reassigned to Charlotte

9/29 --
Garth Murray will miss 4-6 weeks with a broken thumb

9/27 --
Dan Blackburn will be re-evaluated around Christmas with his shoulder injury
